Escape

Author's Note: Sorry for the delayed update! I've been VERY busy with work and getting everything organized for a new college semester. Seems I'll be quite busy for the next few months with two jobs and being a full time student on top of that. *headdesk* I've got a few chapters already written so I should be able to update those at least. Also, I've got guests from England here to entertain for the next few weeks so my updating will be a bit scattered, but I promise to get it to you!

I'm glad to see people are enjoying my story! I love reviews! They keep me motivated! I'm getting a better idea of where I want this story to go every time I sit down to write it and I think you'll all enjoy what I have in store for you. Anyway, here's the new chapter! Enjoy!

Chapter 6: Escape

Nyrobi glared at him. Why did he get to dress so comfortably while she was dressed so extravagantly? And furthermore, what did he expect from her after giving her such a nice place to live? This was far too confusing and frustrating for her so she simply took it out on him with a wicked glare.

Darius ignored her expression and waited for her to take a seat. A servant came over and pulled the chair out for her and she took a seat, pulling the chair in herself before the servant had a chance to. The only response she got was a slight quirk of Darius’ eyebrow at her move. Nyrobi continued to scowl at him. He didn’t say a word.

If they could have spoken the same language, Nyrobi would have been giving him a verbal lashing. Nyrobi would never submit to anyone. She was the Daughter of Nyru. She was to be the next leader of a country! Once her people found her, this man and all of the others along the way would be dead.

Food was placed in front of her then, but she wasn’t given any utensils that she recognized. There was a metal scoop-like object with four metal prongs sticking out one end, another plain scooping object and a knife. Well… at least the knife would come in handy. She watched the man at the other end of the table. His expression had not changed at all and he still hadn’t spoken a word to her. Not that she would have understood what he was saying in this forsaken place.

He seemed to sense her hostility as he was cautiously keeping an eye on her as he ate. Nyrobi watched how he was using the utensils then carefully tried to copy what he’d been doing. Why couldn’t she just have gotten two chop sticks? They were much easier to use.

The food was good, though, and she ate a good deal before she finally put the four-pronged scoop down. The man across from her hadn’t quite finished yet and didn’t seem to be paying as close attention to her.

She slowly took the knife from its place and brought it under the table. He didn’t move or seem to notice her movement. So far so good… perhaps this was her chance to escape? She watched him closely, trying to see if he was paying any attention to her or not. He didn’t seem to be. He was just quietly eating his own food and paying her little mind.

This was it! She could take him out and from there, the other servants wouldn’t be able to catch her. Dressed like this, she could easily be mistaken for nobility and no one would touch her outside of the mansion. She could flee back to Nyru, bring the Sisterhood and free Nevi! It could work! It HAD to work!

She quickly brought the knife up from under the table and whipped it at him. Darius was quick to react, though and managed to dodge the attack in time to have it stick point first into the wooden chair beside his head.

Nyrobi was also fast to react. Immediately after throwing the knife, she was out of her chair and racing toward the door. The dress wasn’t very practical for running in but she was eternally glad that she’d thought of removing the ridiculous shoes.

She pushed the door open and it moved only slightly. The door was heavy so she pushed harder and managed to slip through the opening. Nyrobi didn’t bother looking behind her and ran as fast as she could down the hall toward where she’d come into this mansion. Her heart was pounding and adrenaline was pumping through her body so hard that she couldn’t hear Darius running and calling after her.

Nyrobi ran down another flight of stairs and was almost at the front entrance when Darius slammed against her, pushing her into the door. She yelped as she hit the door but quickly turned around to fight him off. She threw a left hook but he caught her wounded wrist and held it tight. She tried to push him off of her with her other hand but he was too strong. Next she tried to knee him in the groin but he had her effectively pinned in place. She could not move at all unless he let her.

Surprisingly, though, he wasn’t making any move to hurt her and he didn’t look angry… just that same unreadable expression. All she could do was glare at him fiercely though he didn’t look concerned at all. He held her in place long enough for the adrenaline to drain out of her and finally her muscles went limp and he was forced to hold her up.

She whimpered as she began to fall to the floor in defeat. He was quick to put his one arm under hers and scoop her legs up with the other, carrying her back up the stairs.

Never before had she felt so utterly helpless. She expected him to take her to a dungeon and lock her in there for eternity, but he passed the hall that lead to the dining hall and continued up another flight of stairs, towards the room she’d been brought to originally.

She expected him to beat her once they got there, but to her complete amazement, he was being very gentle with her. He got to the room and put her feet back on the ground but kept his other strong arm around her protectively. Nyrobi was pulled close to him, her head almost resting on his chest. The proximity made her very aware of just how powerful a man he was under his casual clothing. This was a soldier, to be sure. And given his residence, a very high ranked one at that.

Tentatively, she put her hand on his chest, near her face as his arm pulled her in close and his other hand opened the door. She barely had a chance to touch him before he had scooped her up again and carried her into the room, closing the door with his heel as he walked in. He placed her gently on the bed then pulled a chair over beside the bed, putting his head in his hands and rubbing his face in frustrated bafflement.

Nyrobi watched him, frowning. What was he doing?

Finally, he looked up at her. His expression made it seem as though he was at a loss. He spoke, but his words were not ones she understood, though the meaning got through to her. “What am I to do with you?”

Nyrobi was perplexed at this. He clearly didn’t want to hurt her or he would have done it already. He’d given her all these clothes and a beautiful room to sleep in and a bathing room… What did he want in return?

Darius watched her for a moment as she pulled her legs in close to her chest and wrapped her arms around her knees. She looked away from him, finally, feeling certain that he wasn’t going to do anything to her. She looked down at the end of the bed. This was such a miserable situation.

He spoke again but the meaning of what he was saying evaded her this time. She looked over at him to try and find the meaning in his expression but was surprised to see a bit of sadness in his hardened face.

It was gone as fast as it came and he stood up and walked toward the door again. Nyrobi watched him move away from her. He had the grace of a warrior and only now did she notice that something about him was intriguing. Part of her wanted to follow him to the door, but the rest of her just wanted him to leave her alone. If she wasn’t to be free, at least let her be a prisoner on her own.

He opened the door and began to walk through it but stopped halfway. Over his shoulder he said one more thing. She couldn’t understand him but his voice was gentle and almost comforting. Then he walked through the door and closed it, leaving Nyrobi lost in her bewilderment.

A/N: There you go! A little bit of action for you all since the last chapter was pretty dry. I've got a lot of plans for Darius and there will be some old characters resurfacing throughout the story so keep an eye out for that. If you're looking for action of a different sort... well, you'll enjoy the next chapter ;) Don't forget to review!
