Chapter 6

Can you take it all away
Can you take it all away
When you shoved it in my face
This pain you gave to me
Can you take it all away
Can you take it all away
When you shoved it my face
Blurry~~Puddle of Mudd

Lachlan watched Margot carefully as she sat in the passenger seat of his car, fiddling with the thin silver chain around her neck. He looked at the steering wheel, his heavy gold and onyx ring gleaming. He chewed his inner cheek thoughtfully wondering, how rude his parents would be. He shook the thoughts out of his head as Margot began fiddling with his car radio, flicking through the stations, her pale fingers pushing the buttons while she hummed.
"Calm down." He told her.
"I am calm." She snapped, continuing to fiddle with her simple jewelry.
"Sure." He answered simply. He slowed the car as he turned into his parent’s suburb. They were suddenly surrounded by large, lavish mansions and he reached out to gently squeeze her thigh, his fingers making small, soothing circles on her skin. She laced her fingers through his as he turned into driveway, stopping at the gate. He gently squeezed her hand as he wound down the window and pressed the intercom button. There was the crackle of static and suddenly a voice floated out of the speaker box.
"Welcome home Mr. Murchinson."
This was going to be hell.

Silence enveloped the room as Margot looked at her plate, thanking the butler as he moved off. She looked up at Lachlan's parents. She shifted uncomfortably as they scrutinized her. His father didn't bother her, she got the feeling that whatever his wife said, went. Lachlan's mother was intimidating. She sat in her seat, her back straight, her shoulders back, her eyes raking over Margot's form. She could see where Lachlan got his looks from. She suppressed the urge to sigh, knowing instinctively that Lachlan’s painfully blue-blooded parents would not appreciate it.
"Salad." Lachlan poked at his entree moodily, shifting the vegetables around.
"Is it not to your liking sir?" Lachlan looked at the butler.
"It's salad. It's not real food." Lachlan poked a cherry tomato with his fork sighing. Margot began eating the salad, avoiding his parent’s eyes, her tongue tingling from the unusual salad dressing.
"Thank you." She said as a glass of water was poured for her.
"You got her pregnant?" Margot looked up, wincing as his mother finally spoke.
"Mother!" Lachlan exclaimed.
"She has a point Lachlan. You're not even married." His father spoke and Margot took a few gulps of water as she felt an asthma attack coming.
"That doesn't matter." Lachlan protested as he pushed his plate away.
"Could you not find a woman of social bearing to fulfill your needs?"
"Was adequate protection not available?"
"Did we teach you nothing about your duty to the family?"
"She is of no significant importance, if you are going to dally with commoners take the proper precautions."
Margot kept gulping down water as the onslaught continued her breathing uneven.
"Do you have any idea what this will do to the family?"
"Normally I would demand marriage immediately, but she will not, I repeat, WILL NOT sully our family name."
"The child I presume will not be formally acknowledged without a blood test."
"How could you have been so damn irresponsible?"
Margot sucked in a few deep breaths before gulping down some more water as her glass was refilled. She murmured a thanks and tried to block out the sounds. She looked over at Lachlan, he had a steak knife in his hand was stabbing the air with it.
"ENOUGH!" Lachlan finally said, "This is my child you are dismissing, Margot is not trash. So therefore you will treat her with the respect she deserves."
"Do you love her?" His mother demanded, her dark eyes blazing.
"Do you and dad love each other?"
"Don't make this about us Lachlan."
"How am I supposed to know about love when all I ever got from you was barely disguised contempt?"
"For good reason, you are a disgrace to the family." Pain prickled in Margot's stomach, not asthma pain, more like needles digging into her stomach lining, increasing with each passing second. She doubled over, pushing her seat out.
"The baby." She gasped out as the needling pain morphed into something akin to a dagger into her stomach being twisted before being pushed in harder.
"What?" Lachlan sounded panicked and so far away. He gripped her hand and his face suddenly entered her vision as tears prickled at her eyes.
"My stomach. The baby." She gasped out, fighting the urge to cry as the pain in her stomach increased. It felt like someone was taking an axe to her belly, hacking away at her insides.
"We need to get you to the hospital." Lachlan said, trying to help her into a standing position, she eventually got to her feet. The pain was worse when she stood and she ended up doubling over again, clutching at her stomach as she sat back down in the seat. Lachlan slung one of her arms and tried to pull her up, begging for help from the maids. They stood there while Lachlan's parents watched.
"So you decided to poison the water?" She heard his mother ask.
"Yes ma'am."
"POISON!" Lachlan's shriek pierced through her ear and as the pain became too much, Margot passed out.
