Chapter ~Six~

Chapter ~Six ~

Andy closed his eyes and lowered his head as Kagan returned to his original position before him. He could feel the rising power flowing from the woodland man’s body. It was as if the entire forest waited for his execution. The unnatural silence unnerved Andy and he knew it was only a matter of time before he burned.

“How do you know that there is a female here on my land?”

The voice was smooth and sounded as if made of wind and thunder to Andy. The sheriff kept his eyes closed as he raised his head. Was he staring at him right now? Did he have to look at him to burn as the others did? Maybe he was planning something more terrifying than a charbroil corpse. Curiosity got the better of him and Andy slightly opened his left eye to see the blue gaze upon him. He waited for the heat but there was nothing but the movement of the black duster upon his body. Andy became bolder and opened his other eye to take in the full picture of this man before him.

“I have not felt your footsteps upon this earth I claim as mine. How do you know there is a female here on my land?”

Andy remembered his breathing and took a breath before speaking. “I heard her when you touched me.”

He did not know what to expect when the duster stopped moving upon his executioner’s body. If the sounds of the calling birds and the swaying trees in the breeze were a sign of things to come the sheriff braced for damage.

“He injured her with his metal when he cursed my land with his footsteps. She is mine and you will not remember her.”

“As far as I am concerned you do not exist and I do not know who you are talking about.”

Kagan stared at the blond haired man for a moment as he shrugged his shoulders as he spoke his pledge of silence. He remembered this man from the time of his father.

“I know you speak truth.” Kagan turned from him.

“Are you going to come across the river again?” Andy asked as Kagan began to walk away from him.

“If I do not have a reason I will not come across the river.”

A slug was the only thing that came to Manon’s mind as the huge white worm-like body came from under the earth. The six black sharp spider legs balanced the massive creature with ease as it walked towards her. The huge fangs hanging out of its mouth gave it a fierce look. Its existence was for pain. She should scream but no sound came from her. The black moss on her body became stiff as one of the spider legs moved towards her stomach.

The touch was not gentle and some of the moss fell from her body to the grass beneath her. The leg continued to move slowly along her body as the moss that fell quickly returned to her to provide protection from the touch of the beast. Manon stared into its huge black eyes shaking in fear but unable to move away or do anything.

“He does not like new things but I thought he would like you.”

Manon gained her strength and scurried towards Kagan who stood behind her. She wondered how long he had been there as she threw herself into his arms for safety. Kagan held her firmly as she trembled when she felt the beast touching her back.

“He will not harm you he only wants to know your steps he can tell this from the weight of your body from this touching.”

Manon clung to him as the beast continued the slow and methodical movements. A deep sound began to resonate from the presence behind her. The touching stopped and the arms of her protector lifted her from the ground. Manon looked at his serious face as he walked towards the forest.

Manon’s arms surrounded his neck as she stared at his profile. The slug thing began following them a short distance before disappearing under the ground. She watched the hump in the grass roll on ahead of them as if it knew where they were heading.

Fear of the unknown leaped into her body. “Where are we going?”

“I will take you to my sanctuary.”

He stared into her eyes not watching where he set his feet. The ground leveled before him and discarded rocks and sticks from his path. Manon looked down at the ground and then returned her gaze to him.

“What are you?”

He did not answer her as he turned away. Manon began to tremble. Maybe this was her punishment for hurting her father. She deserved what was to come. His grip tightened around her.

“You deserve warmth and love and I will give you that.”

“I do not know you.”

“You will know me Manon.”

“So where are we going first.” Carter sat in the passenger seat of the SUV and closed the door.

“My uncle lives out in Grenna and he knows a lot of people there.”

Martin chuckled from the back seat. “Is he the same one that kept talking about some man living in the forest that killed your relatives?”

Dave looked in the rear view mirror. “Yes, but he knows a lot and that stuff he talks about I have heard from other people so knock it off. There is something out there and if it has her we are going to kill it and her if we have to.”

Martin frowned but was silent.

“Calm down Dave, we have heard the same thing but no one has ever seen it in years so why do you think it is back?”

Dave merged onto the highway and then began to answer his teammate. “He said he heard the siren. He said he remembered it from when his brother and his cousins went to speak with Ona. He said they heard that the old sheriff turned it on the moment Ona died.”

“How did he die?”

Dave frowned at Martin’s question. “They questioned him too hard.”

“So we are going to some family feud.” Rheese asked frowning.

Dave shook his head and began driving faster.

Carter looked back at the others in the car and then turned his attention to Dave. “We are just going to kill the girl. If you want to start some war with some man who almost destroyed your entire family you go right ahead. I know you want revenge because it is all you talk about when you come back from vacation. We are leaving after she is dead. You are not dragging us into another dire situation.”

Dave chuckled. “You made your own situation Carter I just picked the men that I know would follow me. You just like the killing. Trust me when I say that if she is there he will have her because he knows my family’s footsteps have crossed hers. He will not be content until we are all dead.”

“There is no way I am getting involved with this shit. If all your family could not get rid of him what the fuck are we going to do?” Martin said leaning back in his seat.

“You are already involved as you all are. The Woodland man will not stop here in Grenna; he will take over everything including our town.”

“Only if we piss him off Dave, your family created this and I do not see why I and the others have to help you do anything about him.”

Dave could sense the growing mutiny. “So you want out Martin. You want to face the IA alone like the captain. You either do this or I will open the door on your illegal dealings that goes for all of you.”

There was silence in the car. Dave smiled to himself as he continued to drive. They did not realize what power they held. Their footsteps were foreign to Grenna soil and unknown to the Woodland man. They were invisible to him. Finally, his family could have their revenge and all the treasure within the sanctuary of the man of the forest.
