Chapter 5 - Invitation
What was his problem? Jason shook his head in disbelief as he entered his apartment. “Ryan?” he called out. Good, his roommate/best friend wasn’t in. That would give Jason enough time to cuss himself out for having been so stupid.
Why the hell had he asked Delaney Cameron to be his friend? He must have sounded like a total dickhead. It was completely irrational. Jason barely had enough time for his regular guy friends, let alone another friend who happened to have breasts.
Jason angrily thrust his bedroom door open and threw his duffel bag on the bed. He fell on the bed, soon thereafter, and shielded the late morning sun from his eyes with his arm.
And then what was all that nonsense about pursuing Lani about? Jason could never understand how one female could be jealous of her best friend. When Ryan did something worth admiration, Jason just patted his ass and praised the son-of-a-bitch for a job well done. Jason had to quickly shake the image of Delaney congratulating Lani in the same manner; he just did not have time for that.
What’s more, he could have left well enough alone. It could have been a little nice chat over coffee, but no…like a total ass, Jason had to leave a note with his phone number and basically encouragement for Delaney to give him a ring.
And, of course, hanging out with Delaney also meant hanging out with her friends, including Lani. God, would that tension always exist if those two and he were in the same room? Furthermore, pretending not to have seen those other two imps in front of the coffee shop had been brutally difficult. How was he going to survive being in the same room as those two?
Had it been pity? Jason had looked into Delaney’s cerulean blues with his own mint green eyes and felt something close to sympathy. Was his insistence on being Delaney’s friend nothing more than his attempt to be a boy scout, yet again? To do the right thing, especially where a lady was concerned?
Just then, Jason’s cell rang. Jason silently hoped that it wasn’t Delaney. He slowly checked the caller ID. It was Ryan.
“Yeah?”
“Busy tonight, man?”
“No, not that I know of.”
“Party at Spankman’s?”
Jason groaned. Stan “Spanky” Mueller was one of the biggest dickweeds in all of Southern California, but the son-of-a-bitch sure knew how to throw a good party.
“What time?” Jason asked, rubbing his forehead.
“Ten, eleven?”
“Am I meeting you there?”
“Yep,” Ryan answered. He then shifted into a mock silky tone. “I’ve got the twins until then.”
The twins were actually Ryan’s six-year-old stepsiblings, Megan and Brynn. Ryan spent Saturdays looking after them, while his father worked at the post office. It was just one of those things that very few people knew about Ryan that made him such a stand-up guy.
Jason heard the sound of broken glass on the other end, followed by a six-year-old’s scream.
“Aww, shit,” he heard Ryan say.
“Trouble in paradise?” Jason asked with just a tinge of smarminess.
“Yeah right, asshole. I’ll call you later,” Ryan finished before hanging up his phone.
Jason chuckled. He had seven siblings of his own to worry about, but he thanked his lucky stars that not one of them was a day under thirteen. Beside his older brother, the third oldest was in college over in Florida, while the youngest was finishing the eighth grade.
Jason knew he definitely had to get down to business come Monday. Until then, he was willing to do anything to forget about what he shouldn’t have done this morning at Mona’s Café. He wanted to be anything but the good guy for the next two days. He wanted to let loose and have fun.
Well, as long as it didn’t involve vomiting in front of a large crowd or getting arrested.

“I don’t want to go to a party,” Lani complained to Stephanie.
“Come on,” Stephanie begged, “you’re our meal ticket to anywhere on this stupid campus!”
Lani rolled her eyes and looked over to Delaney for help. Delaney threw her hands up in mock surrender, causing Lani to narrow her eyes.
“You’ll have fun, Lani,” Jacy added sarcastically.
“Wait, wait, wait,” Lani began, “you’re not going?”
“I’ve got plans,” Jacy added, sprawled across the sofa in Delaney and Lani’s living room.
Lani snorted. “Yeah, I’ll bet.” Lani turned to Stephanie. “Steph, you’re gorgeous. I’d be shocked if Spankman didn’t let you into his party. You’ll do fine without me –
“Nooooo,” Stephanie wailed. “If you don’t go with me, I’ll never talk to you again for as long as I live.”
“Hey, can I get in on that?” Jacy asked from the couch.
That earned another scowl from Stephanie. Stephanie began jumping up and down in frustration. Lani was literally two seconds from smacking her if a light bulb hadn’t gone off in her head.
“Oh, Stephie…maybe I will go.”
Stephanie immediately stopped jumping. She regarded Lani suspiciously. “How can I get rid of that maybe?”
“Oh…just…convince Delaney to come with, and I won’t put up any kind of a fight.”
Stephanie groaned. “That’s impossible. Delaney may be harder to convince than –
“Than what?” Lani asked Stephanie who had trailed off in mid-sentence.
“Excuse me for a second,” Stephanie said, as she scurried over to Delaney’s room and promptly closed the door behind her.
“What was that all about?” Lani asked, confused.
“What?” Jacy asked.
“She had a ‘look’ in her eyes,” Lani responded.
“What, the look that says ‘I’ve got a good idea, and you’re so screwed because there’s no way you’re getting out of this one.’ That look?” Jacy asked, skeptically.
Lani regarded Jacy curiously, “Yeah. What? I shouldn’t worry about it?”
“Oh, God no. You’re totally fucked,” Jacy responded.
Lani gulped.

The look in Stephanie’s eyes scared the living daylights out of Delaney.
“Steph?”
“Do you have something nice to wear, Delaney?”
Delaney looked confused, “Uh, why do you ask?”
“You’re going to the dance tonight, sweetheart.”
Delaney’s jaw dropped. “Says who?”
“Me,” Stephanie chirped.
“I don’t think so,” Delaney responded, trying to suppress a laugh. “Why would I want to go to that God-awful party when I’ve clearly expressed a disinter –
“I saw you and Jason at the café this morning.”
Delaney’s jaw dropped a second time.
“So you can either spill the beans tonight in front of us three witnesses or you can come to this party and have a good time,” Stephanie continued.
“Are you blackmailing me, Miss Kaelin?”
“Don’t get me wrong, Delaney. I love you very much, and I’m pulling all this information out of you sooner or later. Let’s…let’s just have some fun tonight…okay?”
Leave it to Stephanie Kaelin to be a sweet little innocent as she blackmailed one of her closest friends in that friend’s own bedchamber. Still, Delaney did not want to talk about this tonight, especially in front of Lani. And maybe…just maybe, a party was just what the doctor ordered.
Even if it took place at Spankman’s house.
“How’d she do it?” Lani demanded as she applied the barest hint of neutral eyeshadow over her eyelids.
“She asked me,” Delaney lied.
“Bullshit,” Lani said, despite smiling. “That little minx…I don’t know how she doesn’t already have an unwitting male wrapped around her little finger.”
Delaney laughed, as she drew the eyeliner across her eyelid. A grumpy figure emerged in the bathroom doorway.
“That bitch is a genius,” Jacy mumbled.
“You look nice,” Delaney commented.
“Too bad I feel like crap.”
Jacy did look nice, dressed in a three-quarter sleeve black blouse with a short white skort that showed off some impressive stems. Although she did opt for some unimpressive black flip-flops to house her feet. She had left her long, brown hair down for once.
Lani, of course, looked beautiful in a gold halter with a black mini skirt and black leather knee-high boots. She kept her hair close to her face. It looked sleek and simply sexy.
Delaney was wearing a black strapless tube top with a black chiffon skirt that made her look like a fairy princess from a naughty bedtime story. She planned to wear her black lace Chinese slippers, as well. Delaney knew she was a little overdressed, but when would she honestly have another opportunity to wear the damn thing?
“Come on guys, hurry up!” a small, yet incessant voice called from the hallway.
And what about the lady of the hour? She was wearing a hot pink tank top, along with some very tight flair jeans and some very high white stilettos to make up for that 5’ stature, proving that size and volume were two very different matters.
Why the hell had he asked Delaney Cameron to be his friend? He must have sounded like a total dickhead. It was completely irrational. Jason barely had enough time for his regular guy friends, let alone another friend who happened to have breasts.
