Late night chat
Lucy plopped herself down on Liz’s bed waking her up from her deep sleep. She yawned and looked over at her bedside clock. It was only 4:00AM! What was going on? Rubbing her eyes awake, she glared at her friend who was smirking and handing her a cup of coffee. Liz brushed her off and flipped over, making space on the bed for her friend.
“You can’t be serious, Luce, I’m exhausted, I had another long shift yesterday and I’ve barely gotten an hour of sleep. Please, just let me get back to bed” Liz tiredly stated, while covering her face with her pillow.
Lucy flipped the bedside lamp on and curled up at the edge of the bed.
“Sorry sweetie. It’s been all about me since I’ve gotten here and normally I won’t complain but we seriously need to talk” Lucy took a sip from her mug while she batted her eyelashes at Liz. Sighing, Liz threw the bed covers off her and sat up. She knew there was no chance she was going back to sleep tonight.
“You know what I don’t understand Luce” Liz yawned, as she gratefully accepted the cup she had earlier pushed away.
“The mysteries of the universe?” Lucy offered, “I’m surprised you haven’t figured those out yet, actually” she teased as Liz smacked her with her pillow.
“Ha, ha, smartass, I was going to say, I haven’t figured out yet why you pick the absolute worse moments to have these little ‘chats’ of ours.” Liz smiled to herself remembering old times.
Laughing, Lucy said, “Remember that time in highschool I made you leave your Geometry class so we could talk in the janitor’s closet?”
“How can I ever forget,” Liz groaned, “I missed a pop quiz and had to fake a note from the nurse I was sick.”
“Oh yeah,” Lucy remembered, “ I made what’s his name steal the notepad off the nurse’s desk.”
“What’s his name was Andrew Batterman and he was your fifth boyfriend and on the track team. Every girl in school was jealous you were dating him and here you are five years later and you can’t remember his name.” Liz shook her head smiling to herself. “I remember being so angry at you for pulling me in there in the first place and then you shocked the hell out of me!” Liz began to blush remembering what Lucy revealed that day.
Lucy laughed saying, “Yeah, now I remember, we had done it for the first time the night before right after his track meet. Hmmm….he had a really gorgeous…”
“Lucy don’t you dare finish that sentence! I really don’t want to know!” Liz said quickly, already beginning to blush.
Glancing at her friend she smiled brazenly, “Don’t you get all shy with me little lady. I remember a certain someone asking me for all the juicy little details and couldn’t wait to hear more. You certainly had no problems back them listening to me talk about what’s his name’s nice..”
“Lucy!” Liz said, hitting her with the pillow again.
“Alright, alright, I get the point” Lucy said, a little dazed by the pillow she just received square in the face.
“So, umm” Lucy said, unsure how to approach the subject as always, “has it happened yet…for you?”
“No Luce, I’m damned to die a virgin and you can say the word you know.” Liz blushed a little and so did Lucy by her friend’s openness with the subject.
“Well how come Liz. I really don’t get it. You’re a beautiful girl and super smart. You tend to be a little geeky sometimes and too yourself but some guys find that cute. Plus I would just die for your long red curl hair, It’s so thick and shiny, and always falls just perfectly. And you have the biggest sweetest green eyes I have ever seen and..” Liz stated, trying to understand her friend.
“Wow, cut, exactly who are you trying to sell me to here. You could like an infomercial. Ah, I don’t know Luce, I just don’t really have time for guys, you know” Liz started, “school and work are basically my life and I’ve gotten caught up in it. I love what I do and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
“God knows mamma Renolds would be very happy to hear that” Lucy teased, knowing Liz’s parents practically as well as her own.
“Yeah well, lately I’ve been realizing that maybe it’s time I figured out what else I wanted besides my career. I mean, I knew before I got into this, medicine was more that just a career but a life style: the long hours, the patients, the tiredness and ungrateful patients, the unfair health care system…” Liz was on a role.
“Okay, okay, Liz, I think I’ve heard this speech about a million and one times before followed by an equally long list of benefits which I believe included cute male doctors.” Liz cut her off before she really picked up speed.
“Yeah, actually, speaking of which...” Liz began, glancing down at her cup of coffee. Snuggles had jumped on the bed and was now lazily rubbing his body against her leg wanting to be pet. “I, umm, kinda asked one of them out for this Saturday.”
“Hunh, what?? Why did you not tell me the minute you got home? Why haven’t I heard of this guy before? Why aren’t we picking out outfits? Where are you going on this date?” Lucy got up and began sifting through Liz’s closet as she shot out question after question.
“Wow, down girl, relax, it’s only a date” Liz said.
Lucy turned around to stare at her friend inquisitively. ‘Only a date, hunh,’ she thought to herself. ‘Either Liz is really nervous and trying to keep herself relaxed or she isn’t into this guy.’ ‘You know what,’ she thought, ‘it doesn’t really matter, at least she’s getting out there, for now.’ Liz smiled and turned back to Liz’s closet.
“So, where are you doing on this ‘only a date’ date?” she asked.
“Just dinner and a movie. You have heard of me mention this guy before actually, Mark, remember?” Liz said, eying Lucy closely. They might share many things, but taste in clothing was not one of them. She was not, under any circumstances, waering anything short or low cut on this date. She was already unsure of herself as it was. ‘wow, where did that come from’ she thought.
“Dinner and a movie, hunh. Well since I know you won’t wear anything of mine and you are not allowed going on this date with anything from this closet, then we’re going shopping tomorrow and there won’t be any discussion” Lucy happily clapped her hands and headed out of Liz’s room.
“I think I’ll start breakfast. Rob deserves a little break from our morning ritual” Lucy called out over her shoulder.
Liz smiled to herself seeing a change in the Lucy she knew. Her friend was falling for this guy and she doubt Lucy even realized it.
