Emerging Powers...and Attractions
Brett had a total of thirty six stitches in her left arm. Her arm had been wrapped in gauze and a temporary cast put over it. The doctors had pumped her full of morphine and had wanted to keep her overnight. Kristian told them that it was necessary and that he’d make sure she didn’t do anything strenuous with her arm. The doctors reluctantly let her leave and called in a prescription of painkillers for her.
Kristian had to practically carry her back out to his car. Brett was completely lost in the morphine and she wasn’t using her legs properly. And she wouldn’t stop laughing. Everything, no matter what it was, made her laugh. In the back of his mind he thought that her laugh was actually kind of sexy. He mentally kicked himself for thinking that and helped her slide into the backseat. He fastened her seat belt across her and then got in the front.
Jacob had stayed in the car for a few reasons. One, he was still mad at Kristian for hitting him. Two, he still wanted to eat Nikara. And three, his eyes hadn’t bled back to normal yet. So he had to remain in the car for about two hours.
“It’s about time you guys came back. I was wondering if I’d have to send a search party in for you or something.” He said sarcastically. Kristian started the car and pulled out onto the street.
“You try and get thirty six stitches and work around telling the doctors how her arm got messed up and why I didn’t have a shirt on.” Kristian told him.
“I wouldn’t have needed stitches. Tiger, remember?” Kristian had had enough. He pulled into the parking lot of an elementary school. This town had two. He turned the car off and turned to Jacob, or as much as the seat belt would let him.
“What the hell is your problem?”
“I don’t have a problem.”
“Yes, you do. You’ve been a jackass ever since we left the store. What’s with you?” Jacob shifted his eyes to look at Brett who was starting to fall asleep in the backseat.
“She’s my problem. Alright? Happy?”
“What is it about her that’s getting to you all of a sudden?”
“I don’t know. Every time I look at her I wonder what she tastes like. And not in a sexual way either. I want to sink teeth into her.” He ran his hands through his hair and leaned back into the seat. “Tell me I’m not going crazy.”
“No, you’re not going crazy. You just killed two people and ripped them apart then she comes near you and is covered in blood. You were hungry. It’s what happens. But you’re stronger than this. I’ve never seen you act this way before.” He paused for a moment. “You’re an alpha aren’t you?”
“Yeah.” Was all Jacob said. “How’d you figure it out?”
“Well you were standing in the middle of two mutilated bodies and hadn’t shifted. It was a give away. That and your arms were drenched in blood. Which I might add are blood free. Clean up while we were inside?” Kristian asked.
“Had to keep myself occupied somehow.” Jacob said licking his lips. He looked back at Brett and then punched the dashboard. He dented it.
“Jacob, calm down. Let’s just get you guys to my house and we’ll put you in different rooms. And don’t look at her. I don’t want you beating the hell out of it before we get there.” Jacob nodded and rested his forehead against the window.
Kristian started the car up again and got back onto the street. He turned right at the light. He kept catching himself glancing in the review mirror at Brett. It took physical effort to keep his eyes off of her and on the road. He headed towards Baxter Avenue and turned left on Harbert St. then right onto E. Arch. All the lights were nice enough to be green for him so he didn’t have to stop anywhere but his house.
His house was two stories and white. He really wished that it wasn’t white, but he didn’t mind it that much. There was a porch that wrapped halfway around that was enclosed. His house was big enough to fit everyone who decided to come over from his pard.
“Here,” Kristian said giving Jacob the keys. Go inside and pick a room where you won’t see her as I bring her in. Probably the kitchen would be best.”
“You like her, don’t you?” Jacob asked turning to face him.
“Now while she’s with you I don’t.” Kristian said getting out of the car. Jacob followed and closed his door. His eyes had almost returned to normal.
“Alright.” He said and walked towards the house. Kristian waited until he was inside before opening Brett’s door. He unfastened her seat belt and managed to get her out of the car without waking her up. It didn’t last long though. She shifted his arms about the time he hit the front door. She slid one hand to his shoulder and one around his back. It was the easiest way to feel secured when someone was carrying you.
“Where are we?” She asked sleepily.
“My house. I’m taking you upstairs so you can sleep some more.” He walked through the small hallway and turned right to go up the stairs.
“I’m not really that tired anymore. How long is morphine supposed to last?”
“With the amount they gave you, I’m surprised you’re awake right now.”
“I know. But I don’t feel the effects of it anymore. I can feel my arm again and I couldn’t before. It’s also starting to hurt again.” Kristian listened to her as he walked into his bedroom and placed her gently on the bed.
“Doesn’t hurt that much, does it?” He asked sitting down next to her. She shook her head.
“No, not really.” Brett paused. “Where’s Jacob?”
“Downstairs in the kitchen. I told him to stay out of the same room as you. He still hasn’t gotten over wanting to eat you yet.” Nikara’s skin paled. Kristian smiled softly and held the side of her face in his hand. She was warmer than she had been earlier, which was a good thing.
“Don’t worry. He doesn’t really want to eat it…sort of. It’s just that every time he looks at you…he wants to. We’re not sure what’s wrong with him. But for now we’re going to keep the two of you away from each other to avoid any accidental meals.” Brett sat there and didn’t say anything.
“That last part was a joke, Brett.”
“Oh,” she said and lowered her eyes. Kristian let his hand trail down her neck to her shoulder. He raised his other arms and gripped her other shoulder and shook her a little.
“I’m not going to let him eat you alright? He’ll have to get himself through me first. I may not be an alpha, but I can hold him off for awhile.” When she didn’t respond to him, he grabbed her chin gently and turned her face up to him. Her lavender eyes were so confused and pain filled.
“I mean it Brett, he won’t be able to get to you. Not while he’s like this. You understand?” She nodded against his hand. Kristian couldn’t get himself to move his hand. He didn’t want to but knew that he should. But he just couldn’t get himself to do it. Before he knew what he was doing he was leaning in closer to Brett, who to his surprise, was leaning forward. His lips were about to touch hers when he heard someone, probably Jacob, coming up the stairs. He pulled back and stood.
“What’s taking you so long?” Jacob called from the top of the stairs. He had no intention of going into that room, not with Brett in there. Not now anyway.
“Just answering questions.” Kristian replied looking at Brett.
“About what?”
“Oh, different things. You, why the morphine wore off. You know, the usual things.” Jacob took a step towards the bedroom door then stopped.
“Is it alright if I come in?” He asked cautiously.
“Are you going to eat her?” Kristian said.
“Not sure, sit with her. That way you can get her out of the way if I run at her or something.” Kristian got onto the bed and sat behind Brett with his back resting against the wall. Brett was sitting a little to his left.
“Alright, you can come in.” Kristian told him. Jacob slowly walked into the room and avoided looking at Brett. He just didn’t know if it was a good idea.
“Look at her.” Kristian said. Jacob raised his eyes and looked at her. That feeling in the pit of his stomach returned. It bubbled under his skin and spread through his body. He knew she was Brett…but still, she still smelled like food. What the hell was wrong with him? He turned his back on them.
“I can’t look at her.”
“Then don’t, but sit on the bed next to her.” Jacob turned back around and did as Kristian said. He kept his eyes glued to the floor. He sat down about a foot away from her so that they weren’t touching. Jacob could still feel her next to him though. He reached out a hand and trailed it along her leg. She flinched and moved backwards. She wasn’t for sure why, but she did it.
“It would be best if you didn’t move, Brett.” Kristian said. “Fear excites most of us.”
“Does it for you?” She asked.
“No, not for me. But for Jacob it does.” Jacob’s breathing started to quicken as he sat there on the bed. A fine tremble ran through his body. Brett couldn’t stop herself from moving back away from him until her back ran into Kristian, who had sat up off the wall. He had one leg on either side of her and leaned back against the wall again. He slid one arm around her stomach and slid the other across the front of her shoulders and held her against him in a protective manner.
Kristian could hear her frantic heartbeat and smell her; she was dripping in fear. He gave her body squeeze with his arms.
“Relax, Brett. You’ll only make him worse if you don’t.” He said into her ear. She was so tense. “I’ve got you, remember?” She nodded slowly and forced herself to relax. It wasn’t easy, not in the slightest. It took her about five minutes to fully get relaxed in Kristian’s arms and sink into the form of his body. Kristian’s own heart started to beat furiously, but it wasn’t from fear.
Jacob turned on the bed so that he was now on his hands and knees. He lowered his head down to her ankle and started to breathe in her sent, her fear. He slowly moved up her leg. He stopped when he reached her thigh. He nipped at her leg, just a scrape of teeth. Brett’s upper body tensed in Kristian’s arms again and Jacob bit into her leg but didn’t bite down.
“Jacob. Get your mouth off her.” Kristian said. Brett’s hands grabbed onto Kristian’s arm, which was still around her shoulders.
“Don’t move.” He told her. Jacob was looking up at Kristian from where he was. He wasn’t going to move and he might just bite down. He didn’t know which he wanted to do, bite down now or somewhere else.
Kristian opened his mouth and let out the scream that can only come from big cats. The sound so close to her ear made her jerk and she turned her head into his shoulder as Jacob let her leg go and made a spring for Kristian. Using the hand around her stomach, Kristian grabbed Jacob’s throat and squeezed. The movement caught Jacob off guard and he froze. His face was inches away from Brett’s. He couldn’t see her face because it was hidden by all that red hair; also her face was turned away from him. He went to lean in to smell her hair but Kristian’s hand at his throat prevented him.
“Are you going to do anything to potentially harm her?” Kristian asked.
“No, I don’t think so.” Kristian slowly let his hand fall away from Jacob’s throat. He had good reflexes, he was a cat. But so was Jacob and at the distance he was from Brett…it was better to be safe than sorry.
Jacob finally leaned into Brett. His body was practically pinning hers to Kristian. He pushed back her hair so he could look at her. She still had her face turned away from him but her neck was right in front of him. He put his lips to the tender flesh and exhaled slowly. The warmth from his breath made Brett turn her head towards him. Jacob grabbed her wrists and moved her hands away from Kristian’s arm. He left her arms on either side of Kristian’s legs.
Jacob started to bite at her neck gently. It wasn’t enough to even break the skin. And if Kristian wasn’t going to really let him bite her, then this would have to work. He trailed bites along her collar bone and then down one of her arms.
Brett couldn’t help but squirm. It’s not that she wouldn’t have minded him using teeth, but he did want to eat her and this was really making her uncomfortable. The only reassurance she had was from Kristian who right now was more appealing than Jacob was. At least he wasn’t wondering how she would taste.
Kristian knew that he had to find a way to get her to relax again. Her squirming wasn’t going to do anyone any good. Well he knew how to fix this. He was a cat after all, its about time he started acting like one. He tightened his grip on her and for a moment her body tensed up more then relaxed against him. He buried his face in her hair and nuzzled behind her ear. He let a deep purr from his throat escape his lips and tremble over Brett’s neck. Her body shuddered under his arms and he couldn’t stop the smile that spread on his face.
When Jacob came back up from her arm and seen what Kristian was doing, he was suddenly angry. Forget food, now he was just mad. It wasn’t a red hot anger that would lead to violence. It was more of a jealous anger. But yet…it didn’t only make him mad. It also heightened his excitement. It made him stop in mid-motion and stare at them. Was he really liking the fact that his best friend was about to make a move Brett? The girl he, Jacob, was with? Yes, yes he was. And the only thing he
wanted right now, oddly enough, were the two of them.
Jacob ran a hand up each of their arms. Even with Kristian’s arm around Brett he could still do it. The two looked at Jacob as he moved his hands. Neither moved. His touch was feather light and gave both of them chills. He cupped the side of Brett’s face in his hand and brought her forward just enough to kiss her. Kristian helped and pushed her forward so her back wasn’t on him anymore. He ran his hands up and then back down her back. When he went to go up again he slipped his hands inside her shirt and rubbed along her skin.
Brett and Jacob’s mouths worked desperately against each other. It was like they were trying to drink each other down; to taste every part of the other’s mouth. Brett’s hands found their way to him and she skimmed them up his arms until she could wrap her arms around him. When Kristian started to raise her shirt, she pulled away from Jacob and lifted her arms into the air. Kristian got her shirt off easily and threw it aside.
She turned on the bed so that now Jacob and Kristian were on either side of her. Her eyes moved to Kristian. She wanted him, wanted both of them. Kristian couldn’t deny it either. He looked at her with hungry as before she touched her lips to his. Their kiss was just as deep as hers and Jacobs had been. Their tongues explored each other, tasting every inch. Jacob bent his
head down so he could leave kisses down her neck.
The feel of both their lips on hers made Brett moan. Kristian smiled and deepened his kiss. Inside, Brett could feel something building. And it wasn’t sexual. It was purely magical. She wasn’t quite sure what it was and at this moment didn't really care. But it didn’t stop the magic. It came from somewhere deep inside her and up into her throat. A tiny ball of orange light passed from Brett’s mouth into Kristian’s. It didn’t effect Brett any, but Kristian felt something. A surge of heat that suddenly traveled through his body. His body convulsed to the sensation that he was feeling.
Jacob gently slid one hand up Kristian’s leg while his other trailed up Brett’s back. His finger’s played along the back of her bra. He was about three seconds from undoing it when he heard the faint footsteps of someone coming into the house. Kristian either didn’t notice or had noticed but didn’t care.
“Kristian! Jacob! Please tell me you guys are here!” A woman’s voice yelled from the living room. Everyone stopped moving. The woman’s voice was almost panicked and she started running up the stairs.
Brett turned her head and looked at the door. It slammed shut.
“Yeah, Faye, we’ll be down in a minute.” Jacob called through the door.
“Kristian in there with you, too?” The panic was still in her voice.
“He is, Faye. Wait for us downstairs.” They heard her walk back down the stairs. Jacob let out a sigh and leaned his head on
Brett’s back and she leaned her’s on Kristian’s chest. Kristian ran a hand slowly through both of their hair. It caused them to look up at him.
“Until later guys.” He told them. After a minute of just looking at each other, the three finally got off the bed. Brett collected her shirt and put it back on while Kristian pulled one from a drawer. Jacob hit the door first. Brett grabbed his arm and turned him to face her. Not saying a word she raised up and kissed him. He put an arm around her waist, kissed her back then pulled away.
“Let’s not keep her waiting.” Jacob said. He smiled down at Brett who returned one with her own. He backed away from her, opened the door and headed out. She started to follow.
“Brett?” Kristian said. She turned around in the doorway. He walked over to her and leaned on the doorjamb opposite her. He seemed to be having trouble getting his thoughts together to say what he wanted.
“What is it?” She asked softly furrowing her brows. It wasn’t hard to tell something was bugging him.
“What does this change?” He asked.
“What do you mean?”
“Me, you, Jacob. Do you plan on choosing one of us or both?” Brett pushed off the door and stood with the front of her body
touching his.
“Both.”
“Why?” He asked looking down at her.
“I already chose Jacob. I’m adding you because I don’t think I can look at you and not want you. There’s…something about you. Something that I know could be magical.” She pressed her body into his more. “Can you honestly tell me that you haven’t felt it?” She asked.
“I have. But I needed to know. Because I don’t think that I could stand to watch you be with him. I know that makes me sound really bad but-” Brett silenced him by giving him a kiss. He hadn’t been expecting it. That same feeling of heat spread through his body. Only this time it was hotter, fiercer. It caught him off guard and he stumbled, causing Brett to stumble with him, but their lips never left each other. As the kiss grew so did the heat. It continued to spread over his body and over to Brett. It made her gasp against his lips.
Kristian moved them out into the hallway and pressed her back against the wall. The heat grew until they were almost too hot to touch each other. A wind picked up in the hallway. Brett and Kristian moved off each other and she pushed herself off the wall. The wind was all around them and neither knew where it was coming from. The walls started to bend a cry from the force of it. Brett slid her hand into Kristian. A scream played along the wind that sent chills up her spine.
“Kristian…” She was turning to face him when the wind gave one rough blast. It knocked both of them off their feet and they didn’t stop until the hit the wall at the end of the hallway. It was about fifteen feet of being in the air. The impact made both of them cry out. They sunk to the floor and Kristian put himself over Brett. The walls and floors started to crack. Pieces of the ceiling were raining down on them. This wasn’t the same as it had been at Jacob’s. No, this wasn’t meant to kill them. Kristian knew that. He knew how Mathayus’ power felt and this wasn’t it. And if it wasn’t, then what was it?
Kristian had to practically carry her back out to his car. Brett was completely lost in the morphine and she wasn’t using her legs properly. And she wouldn’t stop laughing. Everything, no matter what it was, made her laugh. In the back of his mind he thought that her laugh was actually kind of sexy.
