The Explanation
When Leah got home, she jumped into the shower. Dressing in her ‘study clothes’ – flannel pajama bottoms and a tank top – she made herself a sandwich and settled into the kitchen table with her algebra book just in time to hear a knock at the door. Amused at the timing and still in a great mood, Leah hurried to the door and swung it open.
Dylan was standing on Leah’s porch with his navy blue hoodie pulled up over his head and his hands hidden in the big pocket in front. “Hey,” he said.
Smiling, Leah opened the door wider to let him in. “Hey Dylan, how’s it going?”
“Fine,” he replied as he entered the house. “How are you doing?” He looked concerned and Leah was confused.
“I’m fine,” she said as she followed him in the living room and sat down next to him on her parents’ overstuffed couch. “Why do you ask? You look like something’s wrong.”
Dylan wouldn’t meet Leah’s eyes. “Oh,” he said, “it’s just that I knew your parents were out of town last night, so I called a few times to see if you wanted me to stop by and crash on the couch…” His voice trailed off for a moment. “I didn’t think much of it until about 2:30, when Callie called me drunk asking for a ride home from a show. That’s when I realized you weren’t with her.”
With her stomach turning in knots, Leah finally understood why Dylan was upset. Pulling her feet under her, she touched his knee gently and smiled at him. “I stayed at Flame’s last night,” she said, trying to force him to meet her eyes. “But if you’re concerned if I did anything stupid, I didn’t. I mean, I know I like the kid, but I’ve only known him two days, and losing my virginity while drunk to a relative stranger has never really been on the top of my ‘to do’ list.”
Finally meeting Leah’s eyes, Dylan bit the metal hoop through his lip and shook his head. “I’m sorry, Leah,” he said. “It’s none of my business anyway. I don’t want to become that creepy jealous guy you don’t want to hang out with,” he admitted.
Leaning over to wrap her arms around him, Leah rested her chin on his shoulder. “You could never be that to me,” she told him. “You’re too busy being the best friend I could ever hope for.”
Dylan smiled at Leah’s affection; he should have known that she was smarter than to sleep with anyone the day after she met them, and he should have known that she wouldn’t get mad for him sticking his nose in where it didn’t belong. Leah was just that cool a person. “So,” he said after a moment. “You studying for the trig test? Cause I could definitely use some help if you are.”
Standing up and walking towards the kitchen, Leah turned back to Dylan. “Well, you’ve come to the right place, then,” she said as he got up to follow her.

Later that night, after two hours of studying, a pizza, a twenty minute phone call from her parents, and two episodes of “Viva la Bam”, Dylan finally left. Leah felt beyond happy thinking about her weekend. She’d met a gorgeous, sweet, funny guy; she’d kept things with Dylan good; she’d studied for her test; and it was still only 8:30. Leah couldn’t remember the last time things seemed to be going so well for her.
Hearing the phone ring, Leah hit mute on the remote and got up to answer it. “Hello?” she said.
“Hey,” Flame’s voice replied. “How’s the studying going?”
Leah sat down and smiled. She’d known him for about 48 hours, and this was already his second phone call. “Good. Dylan and I finished about an hour ago, and he went home. Now I’m just sitting around being lazy. How about you?”
With a few voices coming into the background of his end of the line, Flame responded at a lower volume. “Well, things here are winding down after another practice. I was going to watch some TV and go to bed early; I have to be at the restaurant by 10:00 tomorrow,” he told her, speaking of his job as a prep chef. “I just wanted to make sure you were doing ok.”
Overwhelmed by the simple thoughtfulness of his gesture, Leah felt her stomach turn a flip. “I’m good. It was really sweet of you to check up on me.”
“Well, I also wanted to ask you if you want to see Alkaline Trio on Friday. They’re playing at Blondie\'s Place.”
Leah smiled at how much they had in common. “I already have tickets,” she told him happily.
“Perfect,” he said. “Well, I’m going to go. Maybe you’ll give me a call one night this week, okay? Otherwise, I’m going to think that I am far more into you than you are in me. And we both know that can’t be true. I mean, come on; look at me…”
His joking cockiness made Leah laugh. “Don’t get too full of yourself there, tiger,” she said. “I guess you’ll just have to wait and see if I like you, or if I was just really bored this weekend.”
“I can deal with that,” Flame told her. “Have a good week?”
“You too,” Leah replied. “And I can’t wait to see you on Friday.” She meant it too. “Bye.”
Leaning back into the cushions of the sofa, Leah just lay there for ten or fifteen minutes wondering what kind of trouble she was getting herself into by falling so quickly for someone that she barely knew. Then, she decided she didn’t care.
