A visit from a friend

Knock, knock, knock. \"Go away please\" Jason yelled from his pillow. It was Sunday morning and all he wanted to do was sleep. Another knock. \"I\'m still sleep\" he yelled.
\"Aww c\'mon buddy\" came a crass, baritone voice from the other side of the door. \"I just got this new Madden game and I wanna kick some butt.\" It was Marcus, the only other person Jason would consider a best friend. \'Maybe if I ignore him, he\'ll go away\' Jason thought to himself.
\"Open the damn door, Jason!\"

\"Go away. please\" Jason repeated. Suddenly the door opened and Marcus stepped in. \"What happened to privacy?\" Jason asked looking up from his pillow.
\"You have none, my man.\" Marcus replyed as he began turning on the tv and hooking up the game. \"Besides, we need to talk.\"

It had been a little over a month since the incident at the mall. Veronica hadn\'t said anything to him about it and he had been avoiding her ever since. She had taken the hint and did the same. \"Here\" Marcus said, tossing a controller at Jason and taking a seat on the floor. They picked teams and played around with the settings before finally starting the game. After the first half Marcus finally broke the silence. \"What\'s up with you, man?\"
\"What do you mean?\" Jason responded frantically pushing buttons trying to block one of Marcus\' passes.
\"Shit\" Marcus mumbled to himself as one of his men was tackled before he could catch the ball.

\"You know what I mean. You\'re acting like a zombie. And not like the cool ones that eat brains and rip flesh from your body either. I\'m talking about the wimpy ones that go to all their classes and eat lunch in their cars. What\'s going on with you and V?\"
\"Nothing, man. That\'s just it. She ditched me at the mall to go off with asshole and we haven\'t talked since.\"

\"And how long ago was this?\"
\"Ehhh, about a month, give or take a few weeks.\"
\"Pit-tie-ful, man. Pitiful. Listen, why don\'t you come to this party with me?\"
\"When is it?\" Jason asked with the least bit of interest in his voice.
\"You know I\'m about to score on you, right?\" Marcus interupted the conversation.
\"Whatever man.\"
\"Okay...It\'s tonight at eight.\"
\"I dunno, I mean....\"

\"Come on!\" Marcus interupted again. \"We don\'t have school tomorrow so don\'t use that as an excuse. You need to get out of this funky ass room and take a break from life.\"
\"Yeah, but...\"
\"I\'m not taking no for an answer. Okay, how about this. If I make this touchdown, you go. If not, I\'ll leave you alone.\" Jason looked at the tv. Marcus was all the was back by Jason\'s 30 yard line and it was 3rd down. No way for a touchdown.

\"You\'re on\" Jason said with confidence. Marcus lined his men up and hicked the ball. His quaterback scrambled around for a while, looking completely lost. Jason chucked to himself and looked at the clock. Only six seconds left. Suddenly the quarterback hurled the ball down the field to one lone man on the 35 yard line at the other end of the field. Being the only man down there, the ball was caught and ran into the endzone where the player spiked it at the enjoyment of the digital crowd.

\"Touchdown baby!\" Marcus yelled as he jumped up and did his own little football shuffle. \"Take a bath man, you stink.\" Marcus said unhooking the game. \"And be ready at 8:00, no, be waiting at 8:00. I like to be fashonable late but I don\'t want to miss the party.\"
\"Yeah, yeah, but I\'m going back to sleep now.\"
\"Whatever, just be ready when I come back.\" and with that, Marcus left the room and went down the stairs.

\"Did it work?\" Mrs. Hampton, Jason\'s mother, whispered as Marcus reached the bottom of the stairs.
\"No problem, Ma. Piece-o-cake.\" Marcus smiled broadly and Jason\'s mother giggled as she wrapped Marcus in a tight embrace.
\"Maybe now I can get in that room and wash those nasty underwear. You know he still leaves track marks if he wears briefs.\" Marcus laughed out loud at the thought of Jason\'s underwear being covered in brown stains. \"Lets go in the kitchen. I\'ll get you a slice of cake.\" And the two walked into the kitchen.
