The Park
(Lily)
Lily glanced at her watch, she cursed a bit when she realized her lunch break was over and she really wanted to see the dog walker, the bruise she had seen on her neck had triggered a curiosity.
Some odd reason she was looking for solace and if she was in the same boat as she was, then maybe...
Her watched beeped again as she mumbled, it was time to head back to the small grocery store where she had gotten a job as a cashier.
A week had passed and there was still no signs of Morgan. Luckily the rent had been paid for and Lily avoiding using a lot of electricity trying to keep the bill down.
She got a discount if she bought things at the store so she bought small miscellaneous things to get by.
She got up and turned to notice the dog walker arriving.
“Damn,” for the whole week she would only catch a glimpse of her. The dog walker had an erratic schedule, never consistent.
Lily just gave up and made her way back.
(J.J)
“I don't know what else you want I've renamed the damn dogs over four times. Hammer I re named him curly because of his tail and spoiled I renamed shivers and-,”
“Sticky, did you rename him?”
“Well yeah, I renamed him snuggles, you know that.” J.J showed Elizabeth her journal. Elizabeth took off her glasses and leaned forward.
“Why don't I have to rename him but the others I do.” J.J asked as she realized the only dogs she had to renamed once was sticky, and chocolate didn't need any renaming.
“Well think about it.” Elizabeth asked. J.J rolled her eyes. “I am I'm trying to figured out why certain names I choose you keep making me renamed them. Sure they're a bit negative-,”
Elizabeth smiled as J.J laughed, “Touche Doc,” J.J applauded her, J.J realized the assignments was doing things in a positive mind set.
“Why did You name chocolate, chocolate bar?”
“I like chocolate and he has the color of it.” J.J rationalized.
“Ok next assignments, I want you to write ten things you love. I mean things not people okay.”
“Fine,” J.J mumbled while she placed the pencil back on her ear and she tucked the notebook in her back pocket.
J.J rode the bus in silence as she rubbed her neck and sighed, she felt numb at the moment. The pill was doing it's job all right, it made her feel neutral about certain things.
“Damn anti-depressant,” she mouthed. She notice her stop coming soon. She stood and pulled the rope, the ping that filled the bus cause her to smile.
'Ping,' she thought as she pulled out her notebook and wrote quickly, 'I like the ping the bus makes when I pull the rope.'
She tucked the notebook into her back pocket and quickly got off the bus, she walked down the sidewalk in a semi-fast pace.
J.J deviated her route as she ended up cutting through the park, she stared at ground and avoided the cracks on the ground and hopped about as she walked.
J.J hopped trying to not step on two consecutive cracks when she felt the pencil behind her ear dislodge itself.
“Damn,” J.J mumbled. She kneel to pick it up.
“Where are you dogs?” J.J recognized the voice and looked up quickly to meet soft blue eyes.
“Day off today,” J.J responded as she put the pencil back on her ear. J.J stood there staring at the woman who sat on the bench where they first met.
“Must be hectic taking care of four different breeds like that.” J.J shrugged her shoulders, “It's okay I don't mind really.”
J.J looked around and notice the sun was starting to go down. “Do you usually come to the park late in the evening.” J.J felt compelled to continue the small talk they were having.
“I rather be here than home,” J.J's ear twitched a bit as she sat down and joined the stranger.
“I'm J.J,” J.J introduced her self as she extended her hand. “I'm Lily,” the blond greeted as she gave J.J a small smile.
J.J felt her cheeks get hot as she looked straight ahead. Lily discreetly notice the bruising around J.J's neck was almost gone now.
They both sat there in silence as J.J notice the uniform Lily was wearing. “you work at the little store on the corner of El and 22nd.”
Lily nodded, she looked down to see the neatly pressed black pants she had on and the white shirt. She had to buy them, and that was being taken out of her paycheck.
“Yeah I was going to go there in a bit, I'm running out of groceries and stuff.” J.J continue and scolded herself. The last things she needed was to get attached to someone, she needed to be as detached as possible from the world.
It made certain actions easier.
Lily glanced at her watch and stood up, “I think I should be heading home then.”
J.J stood up awkwardly as she berated herself mentally for being a bumbling idiot around this woman.
“see ya,” J.J waved as she walked down the pathway and out of her sight.
(Lily)
Lily entered her home cautiously as she realized she was still alone, she made a small quick dinner as she changed out of her uniform and neatly folded it and place it on top of the dresser.
She showered and got ready for bed, once all the lights were out, Lily got under the covers as she laid in bed and closed her eyes thinking of J.J, “J.J,” she repeated as she tried to figured out what the J.J stood for.
“Jillian, Jaime, Josephine, Jan,” Lily snapped her eyes opened as she heard noise outside.
“Please no,” she pleaded as she heard the front door open.
“Crap,” she hissed as she turned to her side and pretended to be asleep.
The bedroom door creaked opened as the lights turned on and Lily flinched, she had no choice now but to look. Morgan stood at the foot of the bed, with a bouquet of roses in hand.
“Here we go again,” Lily thought as Morgan had the most apologetic look on her face.
“Babe?” Morgan called as Lily sat up.
“Babe I'm sorry,” Morgan kneel at the side of the bed and placed the roses on Lily's lap.
“Okay,” Lily mumbled as she put the roses on the night stand and Morgan took her hands and kissed them.
“I know I've been a real jerk lately, but I'm sorry.” Morgan cupped Lily's face as Lily tensed a bit.
“I'm gonna go shower okay,” with that Morgan disappeared into the bathroom and Lily just laid down in bed and closed her eyes thinking of J.J.
(J.J)
“have you ever been in a relationship?”
J.J looked up to meet the doctors eye and she thought back to Lily. 'Lily has prettier eyes,' J.J deducted while she nodded to the doctors question.
“Explain a couple?” she inquire she notice J.J playing with her hands a lot.
“I'm a sister to Matt, I'm a sister-in-law to Mariel-,”
“Not those relationships,” 'you smart ass,' Elizabeth added mentally. She notice J.J grinning.
“You mean romantic?” J.J ask clarifying the doctors question.
“Yes,”
“I dated a bit in high school.” J.J leaned back in her chair as she closed her eyes and thought back.
“I dated one boy my freshman year and then the following years I discreetly date a couple of girls.”
J.J opened her eyes to meet Elizabeth gaze, trying to asses her reaction with the information she just gave.
“who ended the relationships?” Elizabeth asked, while J.J sucked on her lower lip. “I did,”
“Why?”
“I didn't want them to get serious,”
Elizabeth stood up and walked behind J.J and placed her hands on her shoulders. J.J immediately tensed up and held her breath. 'I see,' Elizabeth deducted.
J.J's breathing went back to normal and she relaxed visibly when the doctor sat down.
'Fuck,' J.J mentally cursed, “Okay have you written down the ten things you like.”
J.J mumbled something incoherently while she pulled out her notebook.
“Read them to me,” Elizabeth indicated.
“I like the ping noise the bus does when I pull the rope, I like chocolate milk, and I like jumping over cracks on the sidewalk.”
J.J looked up and showed Elizabeth her notebook.
“Is that it?”
“that's all I have,”
Elizabeth nodded, “Well then, add ten more now you have seventeen to figure out.”
Baffled J.J stood up just as the timer went off. “Fine,” she muttered and walked out.
(Lily)
“Where are you going?” Morgan asked from bed while Lily changed into her uniform.
“I'm going to work,” Morgan astounded sat up, “You work? Please you can't do shit.” She berated.
Lily took the insult and turned to smile at Morgan, “well then lets see how Long I can last until I get fired.”
Morgan shrugged her shoulders content with that idea. Lily walked out of the room when Morgan shouted. “I still want my dinner by six,”
Lily took a deep breath and left the apartment.
Work was normal, Lily had gotten the hang of being a cashier and she liked it. Being responsible and independent made her feel a bit normal.
Lily didn't keep track time of time, while being at work. She enjoyed it. In fact she relished it, she smiled as she greeted the next customer in line.
“Hellooo,” J.J greeted as Lily blushed a bit. “Hi,” she meekly answered back.
“Haven't seen ya at the park?” Lily made small talk as she scanned the items J.J had. Which were a couple of boxes of cereal two gallons of milk and a can of powder chocolate.
“Yeah I walk the dogs at different time sometimes, it's all based on their owners and stuff,” J.J smiled, she took her wallet out of her back pocket and pulled a twenty as she handed it to Lily. Lily couldn't help but notice the T scar on J.J's wrist.
J.J notice and pulled her hand back quickly and Lily moved her gaze down. “Sorry,” she mumbled.
“What for?” J.J replied hastily. 'damn it J.J just take the apology and move on,' she shouted in her head.
Lily shook her head fast as she handed J.J her changed and bagged her items quickly.
J.J felt guilty at the sad look Lily had on her face, 'fuck,' she thought as she swallowed hard.
“I'll be at the park by six,” with that J.J took her bags and left a baffled Lily.
(J.J)
'What the hell are you thinking?' J.J threw her front door as she walked in to see Matt sitting on her couch.
'now what,' she asked silently as Matt took the bags from her hands and they silently put the stuff away.
“Not gonna greet me properly?” Matt asked. J.J shrugged her shoulders and continue on with her task.
“How's therapy?” Matt broke the silence again. J.J looked at him and nodded, “It's going good.”
“Do you like her?”
J.J raised and eyebrow, “Who?”
“Well who else silly, your therapist, do you like her, or do you want to try someone else.”
J.J sighed as she chuckled, why did think of Lily when Matthew asked that. She wondered, “I like her, she has an unorthodox style and that's ok with me.”
“good good,” Matt smiled. “Look,” Matt scratched the back of his head. “Mariel and I have to go out of town for the weekend. Her folks are doing this family dinner things. Can I trust you?”
J.J rolled her eyes, “I won't do anything stupid. Plus I have to babysit one of the damn dogs. It's owners are going out for the weekend too.”
Matt nodded relief, “Here,” he handed J.J a small 2x2 square box. “Keep your pill here okay.”
J.J took it and nodded as she notice it was already filled with five small circle pills.
“Is that all?” J.J asked and Matt nodded. “Okay then well I got a dog to pick up.”
(Lily)
Lily exited the store and looked at her watch, she had a half hour to get home and fix dinner, yet at the same time she didn't want to go home. She would rather go to the park.
She stood on the curb to the right she went home to the left she would see J.J.
“Fuck it,” she mumbled as she headed to the park.
She walked fast holding her hands to her chest. She was nervous and her heart was pounding wildly. She had never defied Morgan freely.
Lily found J.J sitting on the bench and the chocolate color Labrador was fetching a ball, when J.J chucked the ball it flew far away and the dog took off.
Lily sat on the other end of the bench while the dog came back handed J.J the ball and sniffed Lily.
Once done with the inspection J.J chucked the ball again. “Evening,” J.J greeted.
“Hi,” Lily answered back, “have you been here long?”
J.J got the ball from the dogs mouth and threw it again. “Maybe ten minutes, I'm trying to wear out the dog before I head back home.”
“do you like dogs?”
“I got nothing against them.” J.J took the ball again and threw it further this time.
They sat in silence, while J.J kept playing with the dog and Lily took in the scenery. Lily was startle by the beeping noise that emanated from J.J.
“My watch,” J.J showed her wrist to Lily, who in returned nodded acknowledging it.
J.J groaned, “I hate this,” she mumbled while she took out a little pill box. J.J popped a pill in and drank water from a bottle she had next to her.
“Are you sick?” Lily inquired and J.J smiled, “you could say that.”
“Is it bad?”
“to a certain extent,” J.J puckered her lips a bit as she realized how vague her answers were, but that was fine. Lily did not need to know about her.
“Can I ask ya something?” Lily scooted a bit closer to J.J and turned her body so she could study J.J's body language.
“I guess,” J.J answered. The dog had returned by now, but exhausted just laid down by J.J feet and chewed on the ball.
“What does J.J stand for?”
J.J smiled and tapped her chin, “what did you guess?” Lily blushed, how did she know.
“Just tell me what do you think it is.”
Lily smiled coyly at her while J.J could not help but smiled back, her blue eyes seemed so sweet and her demeanor just shouted, 'hug me,'
'oh damn,' J.J thought.
“I was thinking Maybe Jaime or Jillian maybe Josephine-,”
“Josephine oh dear god hell no,” J.J blurted out and Lily blushed in embarrassment.
“Your cute when you blush,” J.J absentmindedly commented, and Lily smiled broadly. It had been a long time since she had been complimented.
“Thank you,” Lily mumbled quietly, “My name is Jane Jent, I know weird last name, but like my grandfather, I took after him and a mixed my first and last name.” J.J slapped her self mentally, that information was pointless why was she revealing such a stupid thing.
“So your grandfather's first name also started with a J,”
“Yup, his name was Jack Jent, which of course growing up he was teased and it was easier to just be J.J.”
“were you teased?” Lily placed her hands on her lap as she gave J.J her undivided attention.
“I wasn't but I hate Jane, makes me sound so girly and every one expected certain things from me.”
Lily nodded and leaned back and looked up at the sky, she sun was really low now. Morgan should be home by know.
'shit,” Lily cursed as she stood up fast. J.J startle stood up too, worried about Lily, her demeanor took a drastic turn as her face went pale.
“I have to get home,” the previous bravado that Lily has mustered was gone as she practically sprinted with out saying good bye to J.J.
