P1: Misunderstandings

PART ONE, CHAPTER FIVE: Misunderstandings

Lucas lay in bed, his hands laced behind his head, and listened to the strange sounds of someone else in the house. It was late, but apparently his father couldn’t sleep. Lucas couldn’t really blame him. Sure, he’d known how Lucas felt about sex, but to actually see that…

Lucas turned bright red in the dark and rolled over onto his side. His father had screamed and raged for almost an hour, before simply turning and stalking away from his only son, his hands in fists as his sides. Lucas waited for a while, sitting on the couch, to see if his father would return. When he didn’t, he’d gotten up and went to bed. Now, three hours later, he still couldn’t sleep. Part of it was what happened, absolutely. It was literally the worst moment of his life. But another part of it was that his father was home at all. He wasn’t used to it. It made him nervous.

A big part of him was angry at his father for his reaction. Okay, he had the right to explode about the situation in and of itself; walking in to see your half undressed teenage son getting groped by another teenage boy. But the fact that his father just couldn’t let go of the fact that it had been a boy was what kept bothering Lucas. He’d known for a long time how Lucas felt. He should’ve accepted it by now, like he said he would.

Scowling, Lucas rolled over onto his back again and glared at the ceiling. He listened for a long time, waiting to hear some sound. But there was nothing. His father had probably done to bed. He decided to try as hard as he could to do the same.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next morning, his father headed over to the storage garage where he kept his car, and Lucas mowed the lawn. He didn’t think about last night, or anything at all. He kept himself self as busy as he could. When Anna showed up at noon, he was pruning their side of the rosebush wall between their property and Mr. Washburn’s.

“Hey, Lucas.” She greeted, and he looked up from his work. “Can we talk for a while?”

He glanced at his watch and decided he could take a break. “Okay. Come on inside.” He led her into the kitchen and made himself a sandwich. “So what’s up?” he asked her, preparing himself for one of her little tirades.

She was quiet for so long that he began to worry. He sat down beside her at the table and ignored his sandwich for a moment. “Anna, what’s wrong?”

“My dad ran into yours this morning.” She said quietly, and Lucas felt his stomach drop. “He told my dad that he was going to look into getting a local driving job.” Now his stomach was rising, and he was suddenly sure he was going to throw up. Anna went on. “He said that something happened last night, and now he can’t trust you.” She studied him for a moment, as though trying to look into his head. “It has to do with David, doesn’t it?”

Lucas opened his mouth, and then closed it again. She nodded as though he’d spoken. “He got you into something, didn’t he? That son of a bitch.”

“Anna, no. It’s not like that.” He saw the look on her face and felt like shaking her. “Really. It’s not like he and I were stealing cars or breaking out car windows. It’s nothing that bad.”

“Then what happened?” Anna asked him, and startled him by taking his hands. “Look, I know I’m not the nicest person in the world, and I guess sometimes I don’t treat you right.” Lucas almost snorted at this, but managed to keep it down. “But you’re my best friend, Lucas. We don’t talk anymore, not since you started hanging out with David, and now you’re in trouble. Talk to me.”

Lucas sighed and turned his head to stare out the kitchen window. He considered telling her everything, but before he could decide, she let out a loud shriek and grabbed him by the face.

“What the fuck is that?” she squealed, pushing his head back hard. She’d obviously sent eh line of tiny bruises running down his throat. There were four of them, he’d discovered this morning after his shower, all in an almost perfect line along his jugular vein. “Who did that to you?”

“David.” Lucas admitted, and Anna let go of him so abruptly he almost fell out of his chair. He looked at her, saw the horror on her face, and sighed. “Listen, Anna, you’re probably blowing this way out of proportion in that head of yours, so let me-“

She jumped to her feet, and he stopped talking. “How could he do this to you?” she snarled, and he realized she had mistaken the bruises for something else. “That evil bastard.” She leaned down and hugged him hard. “Don’t you worry, Lucas, I’m going to go over there right fucking now. I’ll kick his ass, you’ll see.” When she pulled back, she scared the hell out of him by pressing her lips to his for a moment. “It’ll be okay.” She told him, and promptly charged out of the house.

He sat there for a moment, completely dumbstruck. Finally he got up and went into the bathroom. He studied the marks on his neck, and after a moment, he carefully fitted his fingers against them, one after the other, wrapping his own hand around his throat.

“Fuck.” He muttered at his reflection. “This is going to be bad.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anna found David behind his house, half under his car. There was a stereo sitting in the doorway of the garage, blaring something loud and fast and full of guitar. He had one knee bent and was tapping the toe of his boot along to the music. The car was jacked up on the side he was under, and Anna had the overwhelming urge to run over and kick the jack out, effectively crushing him. Instead, she stalked over and turned off the stereo.

He rolled out from under the car, and she saw he’d been lying on a skateboard. He had a torque wrench in one hand, a smudge of grease on his forehead, and another just under his right eye, the blue one. He looked over, saw her, and groaned. She put her hands on her hips and glared back at him, and after a moment he slid back under the car.

“Did you want something?” he called, and she stomped over to him. “I’m a little busy, so-“

“I need to talk to you.” She snapped. “Come out here.”

He sighed heavily, and she heard a clatter as he set the wrench down. He scooted back out, a rag in one hand, and hopped to his feet. He began rubbing the grease from his fingers with the rag. “Listen, Anna-“

She punched him in the mouth.

His head snapped back, and he dropped the rag, but his feet didn’t move at all. He’d squeezed his eyes shut on contact, and she watched his hands clench into fists at his sides. After a long moment, he took a deep breath and opened his eyes, turning his head to look at her. There was a small cut in his bottom lip, but she’d expected more damage. She put her hands back on her hips and lifted her chin defiantly, silently daring him to hit her back.

Both hands flashed out, and she cringed, but he simply picked her up by the shoulders, set her aside, and stormed past her, towards the house. She followed him.

“You’re an asshole.” She yelled, and he stopped and turned to face her. “How could you do that to Lucas?”

David decided that the next time he saw Lucas he was probably going to kick the shit out of him. How could he open his fucking mouth to this girl? After everything she’d done? “Listen, Anna, I know you think you’re just about God’s gift to the universe, but did it occur to you that Lucas might have wanted it?”

She looked at him incredulously. “You really think someone would actually want you to do that to him? His neck is so fucked up-“

David couldn’t help but laugh at this, so he wasn’t paying much attention when Anna closed the distance and punched him again. He was off balance this time, so he almost went down. “Jesus fucking Christ, woman!” he roared at her.

“Fuck you.” She snapped at him. “You think you can just go around hurting people and treating them like shit-“

“Oh, come the fuck off it, lady.” David retorted. He rubbed the side of his face where she’d punched him. “You treat him worse than I ever have-“

“I don’t physically hurt him!” she screamed.

“No, no, of course not.” He agreed. “All the pain you inflict is mental, right? Psychological? Just how many of Lucas’s problems are your fault? How many of them developed because the only person that was supposed to be his friend treats him like a fucking embarrassment?”

“You. Hurt. Him.” She emphasized, poking him in the chest with each word. “You left bruises all over his neck-“

“He enjoyed those, honey.”

Anna’s mouth snapped shut audibly. Her eyes almost popped out of her head. She was silent for a moment, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. David watched her carefully, and realized that perhaps Lucas hadn’t told her anything at all.

“You… you’re a liar.” She whispered, and took a step backwards away from him. “You... he’s not like that.”

David decided that he didn’t care how bad it fucked this girl up. He’d seen the flash of pain and longing on her face when she’d made the connection and realized what the bruises really were. “You’re more fucked up than he is, aren’t you? You come here, assault me and scream in my face for hurting him? What about you? Don’t you see what you’ve done to him? How can you believe you care about him, want him, and yet treat him like that when your friends are around?”

“They don’t understand.” She said softly. “None of them, they’d…. they wouldn’t talk to me anymore. I care about him, but they...”

He rolled his eyes. “Well, tough shit for you, girly, because Lucas doesn’t want you. Hell, half of the time, he doesn’t even like you.”

She shook her head. “You’re wrong. You… you brainwashed him or something. He let me kiss him today.”

David felt an uncharacteristic surge of jealousy at this, but let it go for the moment. Instead, he closed the distance between them and smiled maliciously at her. “He tastes just like oranges, doesn’t he?” he whispered. He licked his lips suggestively. “I can tell you later, in very accurate detail, what his other parts taste like.” Anna was crying now, and he couldn’t help but feel pleased. “Get the fuck out of my yard, little girl.”

She turned and ran. David watched her until she disappeared around the side of the house. Then he went inside and dialed Lucas’s number.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

“You told her WHAT?!” Lucas screamed into the receiver. “What the fuck is that matter with you?”

“I’m sorry!” David shouted. “I thought you told her! I thought she already knew! She showed up, yelling and screaming about bruises on your neck and how could I do that to you. I didn’t know she thought I choke slammed you, or whatever it was that was running through that broken rat maze she calls her brain.”

Lucas pressed his forehead against the fridge and groaned. “Fuck, fuck, fuck.” He muttered, and David sighed on the other end. Then he started to laugh. “What the hell is so funny about this?” Lucas demanded.

“Just the mental image of me choke slamming you. You’re, like, a fucking giant.” He cackled loudly for a moment, and Lucas couldn’t help but smile a little at the sound. “I’m sorry.” David said again after he’d stopped laughing.

Lucas sighed. “It’s all right.” He heard his father’s car and looked out the window. “You need to come over later, we have a lot to talk about. But right now I have to go. I’ll call you, okay?” David agreed, and he hung up just as his father came in with a bag of groceries. “Hello, Dad.”

His father froze for a moment. They stared at each other for a long time. Finally, his father looked away. “Rose bushed look good.” He muttered.

“I’ve been keeping up with them.” He moved to take the bag from his father. “We need to talk. Could you please sit down? I’ll put these away.” His father eyed him warily, but sat down. Lucas nodded and started unpacking the groceries. “Last night, you got to say whatever you needed to, and I allowed you that.” He glanced at his dad, who was looking thunderous. “But now I need to be able to talk.” He waited for his father’s nod. “David and I haven’t slept together. I’m a virgin. You need to know that.” His father was looking sick now, and he turned to face him. “You also need to come to terms with what I am, Dad.”

His father snorted. “It’s a-“

“If you say phase I’m going to start screaming.” Lucas snapped, and his father looked shocked. “Dad, I’m a good son. I’ve never thrown a party, I keep the bills paid, I do great in school. I’m two weeks from my eighteenth birthday, and I’ve never been drunk, taken drugs, or had sex. Can you honestly say that the fact that I’m gay eclipses all of that?”

His father flinched at the G word, and Lucas wanted to scream at him. “I’m not saying you’re a bad kid, Lucas.” His father said. “Its just… how did you turn out like this? What happened?”

“Life happened.” Lucas shrugged his shoulders. “I’m not going to let you quit your job just so you can stay home, Dad.”

“I have to, son. You don’t understand.”

“No.” Lucas sat down across from his father and leaned forward. “You don’t understand. If you quit your job, I’m leaving. I’ll pack up and I’ll move out.” He saw the pained look on his father’s face and was sorry, but he didn’t stop. “I’m almost an adult now. If you don’t want me to live here, then I won’t. But I want to stay, at least until I finish high school. You know its been hard for me. I lost that year when mom died, and…” he stopped and looked away from his father’s agonized face. After a minute he continued. “If you get a local job I leave. You love your job, Dad, and I know you do. I also know you love me, even though you’re disappointed in me. So you can either pick the choice that makes us both happy, which is keep your job, I’ll live here until college, and everything will be okay. Or you can get a local job, and I move out and drop out of high school to afford bills in a crappy slum.” He stood up from the table. “It’s your decision. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

“Where are you going?” his father asked, sounded wounded and out of energy.

Lucas turned and smiled at him. “In my room. That guy that was here last night is going to come over, and we’re going to discuss ground rules about touchy feely stuff in my father’s house. Does that sound okay to you?” he didn’t wait to hear his father’s reply.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

David showed up about an hour later, and Lucas led him through the house. His father had left, presumably to go drown his woes in some bar, like he usually did when he was feeling like life was too much. They sat in Lucas’s bedroom, David on the bed and Lucas at the desk.

“So what do we need to talk about?” David asked him.

Lucas wrapped his ponytail around his hand and sat with his over his shoulder. This was going to be difficult, he knew, and he wasn’t really looking forward to it. “David, I realized that my whole life this past month has been completely out of my control, and I don’t like that. So now I’m taking control of it, and a big part of that is you.”

“Is this a ‘who is going to be bottom’ conversation?” he asked with a smirk, and Lucas couldn’t help but laugh. “Because if it is, let me tell you, I got no problem sharing.”

“No, you freak, its not about that.” Lucas rolled his eyes. “I need to know what you want from me.”

“So it is a-“

“David.” Lucas pointed at him. “Be serious.”

“You want to know what I’m expecting out of what we’ve been doing the past couple of times we’ve been around each other.” Lucas nodded, and David sighed. “Shit, Lucas, I don’t know. I like you, okay? You’re different. You’re beautiful. You’re a total fucking nerd. I like spending all day with you, whether I get to touch you or not.” David fumbled through his pockets and found his cigarettes. He lit one and squinted at Lucas through the smoke. “I want you, whichever way you’re ready for. If we’re friends, that’s great. If we’re more, that’s even better. I mean, if you aren’t ready for that stuff yet, the sex, I’ll probably spend less time with you, because it will be hard on me.” Lucas sniggered despite himself, and David scowled. “Now who’s not being serious?”

“I’m sorry.” Lucas grinned. “I’m glad you can be honest with me. But there’s a problem.” David quirked an eyebrow at him and waited for him to continue. “I don’t know you, David.” He looked confused by this statement, so Lucas elaborated. “You know all about me. I told you about my mom, and my dad, about the things that I like and what I want for the future. I don’t know any of that about you. I don’t even know where you live, which irks me because Anna does.”

“Have you talked to her yet?” David asked, tapping ash onto the knee of his jeans and rubbing it into the fabric with one finger.

“No. She won’t answer her phone.” Lucas replied, and shook his head. “But I’m serious. I do want to be your friend, and I do want to be more than, that…” he couldn’t help but feel wonderful at the look on David’s face when he said that. “…but I can’t be either if I don’t know you. I mean, all I really know is that you’re incredibly smart, you talk too much, and up until we started hanging out, you were a violent troublemaker.”

“I prefer the term juvenile delinquent, thank you.” David said haughtily, and Lucas scowled at him. “But I get it. I really do. I agree with you. It’s not fair.” He spread his arms out. “So, ask away. What do you want to know?”

Lucas stood up and walked over. David looked up at him, still smiling. “First things first, before we get into questioning.” He leaned down and crushed David’s mouth with his own. David responded immediately, and soon they were rolling around on the bed, locked together, each trying to devour the other. After a long while of this, Lucas finally came up for air. He was half on top of David, and had his hands pinned above his head. David was smiling, and he arched his back, effectively rubbing his entire body against Lucas like a cat in heat.

“I like this.” David said, and tilted his chin up. “You sort of took over there for a minute. It was good.”

“You know I’ve never done this sort of thing before, right?” Lucas asked him. He couldn’t help but lean down to taste the skin of David’s throat, which David had exposed wonderfully when he lifted his chin. He swiped his tongue across David’s pulse, then found it with his teeth. David made a low, wonderful growling sound and rubbed against him. “We shouldn’t be doing this.”

“Oh, no, we should stop immediately.” David agreed, and hooked one of his legs around the back of Lucas’s knee. He tugged until Lucas slid between his legs, fitting against him. “You don’t know me, after all.”

“That’s right.” Lucas leaned down again and ran his tongue along the shell of David’s ear. “Perfect stranger.” David pushed his hips up against Lucas, making Lucas shudder and lean into the movement. He slid up a little, creating a most wonderful friction, and they both groaned. “I told my dad I would talk to you about the rules of personal space in the house.”

David scowled. “No rules. No personal space.” He hooked his ankles together behind Lucas’s back and pulled his forward, escalating the tension between them. “I mean, you’re more than welcome to invade my personal space right here, right now, if you want.” Lucas looked down at him, a little shocked, and David laughed. “Oh, come on, Lucas. You’re practically dry humping me into the mattress, and you’re going to get squeamish about an innuendo?” he leaned up and licked at Lucas’s mouth. “You’re so cute and naïve.”

Lucas opened his mouth to retort, but the front door slammed loudly and they both froze. “Lucas!” his father called out, and Lucas scrambled off the bed.

“Well, damn.” David hissed, and rolled over onto his side. “That was anticlimactic.” He wiggled his eyebrows at Lucas, who shot him a dirty look before disappearing into the hallway.

David listened to Lucas and his father talk for a few moments, before burrowing under the blankets. They smelled wonderful, part Lucas, which was toothpaste and something spicy, and part laundry detergent. There was also some underlying smell, something he couldn’t put his finger on. Scowling, he buried his face into the pillows and inhaled deeply.

“It smells like sex.” He whispered, rolling onto his back. The erection that had immediately begun to flag when the door slammed was back with a serious vengeance. Smirking, he unbuttoned his jeans and freed his cock from his boxers. He glanced at the door and listened. Their voices were very faint, so he suspected they were in the kitchen. He closed his eyes began to stroke himself. He thought about Lucas fucking him, thought about how it would feel, imagined Lucas talking dirty. He bit his lip, his head falling back against the pillows, and sped up his ministrations. He could feel how close he was.

He heard the bedroom door creak open and lifted his head. Lucas was standing in the doorway, staring, his mouth hanging open. David smirked and kicked the covers away. He put his finger to his lip in a shushing gesture, the motioned for Lucas to shut the door. He did so quickly and silently, but he didn’t come closer. David’s hand was still moving, but when he made a motion to invite Lucas to help him, Lucas shook his head and gestured that David should continue. David smiled widely and laid his head back, determined to put on a show for Lucas. He wrapped his fingers more firmly around his cock and began to slowly jerk himself off. He propped his head up on his free arm so he could watch Lucas, who was staring intently. As David watched him, his tongue slid out slowly along his bottom lip, and David imagined him doing that to his cock. He imagined watching Lucas get on his knees in front of him and suck him off. David closed his eyes, his hips lifting a little, his orgasm so close.

Then Lucas’s hand closed over his own and that was it. David opened his mouth to vocalize his pleasure, but Lucas’s lips clamped down over his own and swallowed the sound. His tongue plunged into David’s mouth in time with his hand’s down stroke, and David felt his semen coat his belly and fingers. He gasped into Lucas’s mouth, and Lucas nipped his bottom lip gently before pulling away and sitting down on the edge of the bed.

Panting, David watched Lucas study the sticky substance on his fingers for a moment, before he slowly lifted his hand and licked some of it away. David groaned and put his hand over his eyes. “Don’t do that.” He whispered, and Lucas looked at him curiously. “If I get another hard on I’ll die. I can’t come like that again today.”

Lucas smiled. “It’s strange.” He said quietly. “It doesn’t taste bad.”

David half sat up. “Do you have a towel in here or something?” he asked. “I mean, that was awesome, but- oh. Oh, wait…” Lucas bent his head and began to lick David’s stomach clean. David lay back down, trying to stay quiet as Lucas finished there and started on his fingers. He took each one into his mouth one at a time, slowly rolling his tongue along it before sucking gently. “No way you’re a virgin.” David told him, and Lucas frowned. “You’re way too good at this.”

Lucas lay down beside him and rested his chin in his hand. “This is so weird.” He commented as he watched David rearrange himself. “Do you remember the nauseous comment I made?” David nodded. “Wet dreams make me throw up. Just the idea of sex in general. If I thought about it, I would get so nervous I’d puke.”

David burst out laughing. He couldn’t help it. “I’ve never heard of anyone doing that before.” He told Lucas. “You’re such a nerd.”

Lucas shrugged one shoulder. “That’s the thing, though. Before you, I’d never even bothered trying to get my first kiss out of the way. I was always so scared I’d vomit in-“

“Okay, okay.” David cut him off, shuddering. “Gross, man.” He rolled onto his side so he could put his arm around Lucas’s waist. “If I knew you didn’t like to lie, I’d think you were making all this up. About being a virgin. I mean, you just did a couple of things to me that most people with active sex lives would be weird about. You just did them without thinking.” He studied Lucas for a moment. “Why is it different now?”

“With you?” David nodded. “I don’t know. I don’t get sick from being with you. I can touch you, and kiss you, and I don’t feel like I’m going to throw up. I mean, if I’m alone, I still almost always throw up when I think about sex.” David cackled, and Lucas shoved him playfully. “It’s not really all that funny. I lost a lot of weight this last month because of you.”

David laughed so hard he nearly cried. Lucas rolled his eyes and let him get it all out. After a long time of David cackling madly and clutching his stomach, he finally calmed down into nothing more than hiccups and the occasional chuckle. “Oh, man, Lucas, you’re just too great.”

Lucas smiled. “You know what this means, though, right?”

David frowned up at him. “What?”

“I already ruined my plans. I wasn’t going to be anything more than friends until I got to really know you.”

David shrugged and stifled a yawn. He always needed a nap after he got off. “It was a stupid plan anyway.” He mumbled, and snuggled down into the bed. “You can get to know me, on a whole bunch of personal levels, all at once. Saves us both a lot of grief.” He smirked a little. “And you your weight.”

Lucas wrapped his arms around David and buried his face against the back of his neck. “You’re kind of a dick.” He told him.

David sighed. “You really have no idea.”

Lucas let this comment slide, although it stuck with him. He waited until David was asleep, and then carefully got out of bed. He had stuff to do. The first thing was talking to Anna.
