Part 5

Author's Note: I like people to review my story and tell me what they think... I do, Really. I mean I don't know if you guys notice, or if you just skim over the author's note to get to the story... I know two of you, at least, don't do that... but what about the others? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Really!

ikkichi: one of my friends pointed that out to me recently, but I had no intention of doing that honestly.

Hope you guys/gals enjoy!!!

Even from this distance I could see Anya’s face light up and Terry’s frown, but it was seen as a secondary action. My primary focus was on that familiar mess of hair on the head of the girl who seemed more interested in the cat I’d rescued the week before than in the presence that changed the attitude of two of her companions.

I moved forward tentatively, looked down, suddenly filled with a rush of emotion. ‘I can’t deal with this… I can’t…’ I closed my eyes and ‘jumped’ just as Anya called out to me.

~In the Sininon Region~

“Sir. I don’t know how many more can take the treatment. Their blood work isn’t able to take the stresses that come with Neon’s DNA.”

“Then we just keep trying until we do. There must be someone else like Genesis out there…” Dr. Richards and another scientist were standing in an oval office with a window that looked out over the empty campsites that were once teeming with people. Now they were back to the facility proper.

“We can’t risk losing the ones we have trained. Simion think of the consequences.”

“Risks must be taken to achieve success.”

“Neon was one of a kind… Genesis another. Both of them were unique, but we can not replicate Neon any more than we already have.” Dr. Richards looked out to the empty tents

“Then use Genesis’ DNA in the process…” he turned to the scientist with a fire in his eyes “Neon was perfect… but we can do better.”

“Maybe so, but not without a fresh sample.” he replied “These are strained as it is any more dilution and it’ll be worthless.” a wicked smirk came across his features.

“Then we’re just going to have to find Neon and get a sample now aren’t we?”

~Reena’s Perspective.~

“Did you just say Kitsune?” I asked turning to Anya with a frown. She nodded pouting

“She did her disappearing thing again.” I turned to look in the direction she was looking in just as the cat made a mewling sound. There was still a slight distortion in the air and I held my breath for more than a moment before saying

“Hey, I’ll be back in a bit k?”

“Where are you going?” Terry was skeptical as usual

“To see an old friend I hope.” I muttered running towards the spot hoping I got there before the link disappeared, holding my breath as I touched it and got sucked through darkness.

I came back into the light and breathed out looking around as I did. Then I saw what I was looking for. I woman with black hair down to her lower back and natural neon red streaks, walking away from me

“Kitsune!” I called, still unsure. She stopped and my heart skipped a few beats. ‘Please.’ her head tilted ever so slightly in my direction and I couldn’t contain myself any more. I ran towards her and flung my arms around her neck. “I’m so glad you’re alive.” I felt tears brim my eyelids from the sheer emotion. Her hands raised to touch mine, and I can almost swear she smiled

“Yeah…”

“How long have you been here?” I demanded turning her around so I could look into her silver-grey eyes.

“Since the cat…” she mumbled something else, but I didn’t focus properly. Anya had the cat for a week now, which meant she had to have been here for at least that.

“Why didn’t you come to see me? Why did you run?” she averted her eyes, defensive.

“We haven’t seen each other in three years…” she avoided my question, and I scoffed

“You could have found me anytime within there.” I said

“I wanted you to be happy…” her eyes still weren’t meeting mine and her voice was devoid of emotion (as usual), but I had the feeling that she tortured herself for me.

“Come. You need to meet some people.” I tried to pull her but she resisted. I gave her a look and pursed my lips.

“I don’t want to meet new people… I, need to leave soon…”

“Why? Kit you just got here. I haven’t seen you in ages, and…” ‘I want you to stay.’ she turned her head away. Always keeping her distance. Always pushing people away. And I didn’t even get the worst of it… in fact, she was more open with me than ninety-nine percent of the people she came in contact with.

“I-”

“You don’t have a reason to go.” my fingers tightened around her wrist. “Please.” she nodded.

~Kitsune’s Perspective~

Why was she always like this? How did she always manage to do this to me… Reena… Genesis…
