Chapter Five: Slowly Recovering

A Week Later

Kagami frowned as his arm started aching again. He really hated having a broken arm, but at least Nagami was helping him out. In fact, it surprised him that his twin wasn’t even allowing anyone else to help him. The boy must’ve felt somewhat responsible for everything. Technically, it wasn’t either of their fault. However, both teens felt as though they were the cause for their mother’s death. It didn’t help that Nagami kept saying how they didn’t protect her like they were supposed to. Kagami glanced at his brother sadly; Nagami had been hit the hardest emotionally. “Hey,” Kagami quietly said to him, using his good arm to pull away a few strands of hair from his twin’s face. “Are you okay?”

“Heh… not really,” Nagami admitted, pulling Kagami’s pajama pants down. “Step out, bro.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Kagami did as he was told, sighing. “This is so annoying and embarrassing and whatever other words there are to describe it.”

“Well, too bad,” Nagami told him, getting his brother’s dress pants ready for him. “Okay, step in.”

“Right,” and Kagami stepped into the pant legs of the dress pants, watching Nagami pull them up for him. He thought he would have hated this more than he did, but once again, he was only dismissing it as a ‘twin thing’. Nagami, on the other hand, was trying his damn hardest not to kiss his look-alike brother. After the accident, the urges had been getting stronger, and he was getting worried. He knew that he should never love a sibling this much, but he couldn’t help it, and now with the task of helping his twin dress and undress… “Naga, why are you staring?” Kagami suddenly asked him, bringing him back to reality.

“Sorry, Kagami… I thought I saw a scratch,” Nagami lied, grabbing the shirt that Kagami was to wear. “Okay, first…” He reached out and took Kagami’s arm out of the sling gently, then put his arm with the cast on through the sleeve as carefully as he could. Once that task was complete, he put it back in the sling, and helped Kagami with the other sleeve, buttoning the shirt up the front afterwards. With that done, he grabbed Kagami’s tie and wrapped it around his brother’s neck, successfully tying it after only three tries. “You’re getting better at that,” his twin commented, sitting down on the bed. Quietly, he whispered, “I can’t believe she’s really gone…”

Nagami frowned. With their mother gone, things at home had been getting worse. Their grandmother had actually showed up and for the first time ever, seemed to be in a cheery mood. As she insulted their mother again and again, Nagami had gotten so angry that he had actually slapped the old woman. His father yelled at him and told him to apologize, but that only added fuel to the burning fire. Kagami was the only one that could get him calmed down before the police would be called…

“Did you hear, brother?” Kagami asked, looking up at his brother. “Grandmother wants to take Monica away from us…”

“What?” demanded Nagami, his anger flaring up again. “Why?”

“She says that Monica should be raised by a proper woman…” Kagami shook his head and looked down. “We can’t lose our sister too…”

Nagami punched a wall, causing his brother to look at him again. “We won’t lose her. I guarantee it…”

At the funeral, all three Motero children stood together as words were said. Monica was in an adorable black dress that her older brothers bought for her, and the two boys were in black suits. They reluctantly watched the coffin being lowered into the hole. Monica was the first to shed tears, turning towards Nagami and crying into his shirt. He gently held onto her, glancing at his twin to see how he was doing. Kagami was visibly shaking, his eyes misty with unshed tears of his own. “Kagami? If you want to cry… go ahead and cry,” Nagami told him, and that broke Kagami down, turning to Nagami as well and crying like Monica. Nagami held onto both of them, knowing that he had to be strong for his siblings.

He looked at their father. There were no tears being shed from him. There was no look of sadness in the man’s features. He looked as though he was made of stone. Nagami thought this was a bit odd. Didn’t their father truly love their mother? Why was he being so… calm about all this?

It was another week before the kids returned to school. The twins dropped Monica off like usual, reminding her that a friend’s mother would be taking her home after school. Then they walked off to their own school, Kagami’s arm still in the cast. “When does that thing come off anyway?” Nagami asked him.

“I dunno,” answered the other twin. “Whenever my arm is healed, I guess.” He looked at his brother. “How are you holding up?”

“I don’t know…” Nagami admitted. “Everything is just… so fast.”

“Yeah…”

They made it to school safely, but all eyes were on them. Obviously the accident was on the news, something they weren’t too thrilled about. They didn’t want the whole school to know what had happened to them and their mother. It was too personal for them.

Kara ran up to them, worry clear in her eyes. “Are you guys okay?” she asked, genuine concern coloring her voice.

“A little banged up,” Kagami told her with a sad smile, “but otherwise okay, physically.”

“If either of you wants to talk… I’m here for you, okay?”

“Thank you, Kara,” said Kagami, hugging her with his one good arm. “You’re a true friend…”

“Of course,” she said, hugging him back.

Nagami watched the two silently. He began thinking that it might actually be a good idea for Kagami to start dating her after all. She would be great for him. They were both gentle and kind. Like a perfect match, he thought to himself. Maybe he could even reconsider Marie’s offer, if she would talk to him again. “Nagami, ready for class?” he heard his brother ask, breaking his train of thought.

“Yeah,” he sighed, looking over at Kara. “See you at lunch, girl.”

Kara looked shocked, but she smiled warmly at him. “Okay. Take care, boys.”

The twins then started on their way to their own classroom, ready for their first day back for lessons…
