Chapter 5
Hey guys. I posted this chapter and Chapter 4 at the same time, so if you're been following along, make sure you check out Chapter 4 first. Thanks!
Chapter 5
_________________________
(Flashback)
“Get your hands off me you bastard!” I yelled once again, and struggled against the strong grip.
The man held strong and I could only watch as the others neared. One in a flannel jacket came the closest to me and punched me in the face. I couldn’t believe this was happening again. Why again?
I felt pain a minute later, briefly wondering if the man had broken my nose. Blood began to filter down my face and I shook my head, trying to get the pain to disappear.
Before I even realized what I was doing, my instincts took over and I hissed at him. The man paused a moment before laughing once again.
“Did we hurt the kitty?” He asked in a mocking voice.
They continued their beating for what seemed to be eternity. Finally they stopped and hovered over me.
“Should we finish him?” The one in the flannel jacket asked.
Instead of the other man disagreeing, he approved. I felt the tip of the knife press further into my neck. I screamed, not out of pain but out of the horror of the situation. I was going to die. Blood began pouring out of my neck and colored the concrete floor a brilliant red. The men only laughed as I slowly faded away.

“Raven! Rave! Wake up, Jesus!”
I continued screaming, not fully aware that it wasn’t real.
“Raven, wake up. Come on!”
My eyes finally snapped open and I stared into the concerned blue eyes of my little brother. I had closed the blinds before laying down for the nap, so the room was slightly dark. Ren had his hands on my arms, still shaking me. I sat up and he finally realized that I was awake. He stared at me for a moment before wrapping his arms around my neck.
“You scared me so much. Do you know that?” He said, digging his head into my shoulder,” You started screaming and I didn’t know what happened. Are you okay?”
I nodded, a little unsure myself,” Yeah. I’m okay.”
I could feel his soft ears tickling my neck and I rubbed his back a little. I wiped my tired eyes and took a deep breath.
“It was just a dream…I feel so stupid,” I said out loud with a nervous laugh.
“Was it from the other night? When you were attacked?” He asked softly.
“Yes, but it was worse. T-they…they killed me.”
He looked up at me sadly and his usually perky ears seemed to wilt,” I remember how I had found you the other night. Your blood was everywhere. It was all over your body and all over the floor. Your clothes were soaked in it. I saw the ropes on your hands where they had tied you up. You hadn’t even been looking at me. That’s why I had been so scared and thought for the worst. I just stared for a few good seconds before finally coming to you. I thought you had been dead. I really, truly did.”
I watched a big, fat tear run down his cheek. Embarrassed, he quickly brushed the back of his hand across his cheek. That didn’t stop the tears though. He took a deep breath, but only a sob came out.
“Then you started crying in that weird feline cry I had never heard before. I was so scared. I knew it was really serious. You couldn’t even talk, you only cried. At first, I held onto you and I didn’t want to let go. I know we’ve never been really close, Rave…but I thought you were going to die! I was thinking about what to tell dad when I found him. I didn’t know what to do.”
I don’t think I had ever seen Ren so emotional before. Usually Robin’s the one to get so emotional, or maybe it’s just because he doesn’t hide it as much. Ren gave me another quick hug and his crying decreased.
“Sorry,” He said after a minute.
I shook my head,” I’m just glad you woke me up.”
I smiled a bit to let him know it was okay. He didn’t smile back though. Instead, he got up from his kneeling position on the steps of my bed and suddenly sat next to me on the soft mattress.
“Have you had that dream before?” He asked.
I thought for only a brief moment and nodded,” I’ve had it before, but I usually only replay the events over in my mind. It’s usually the same thing, but this time it was different. I’m scared to find out what will happen next.”
“So I take it, you haven’t been sleeping well?”
“Not really,” I admitted.
“Well, I know this sounds stupid, but if you ever need to talk to anybody, you can talk to me, okay? I know I’m not an older brother or a parent…or even a counselor, but you can still talk to me.”
I smiled at his sudden concern,” Okay.”
“I love you, Raven.”
I rolled my eyes,” I love you too, Ren, but I’m okay now. All right? I’m gonna be fine. I swear.”
He nodded slowly and left the room quickly, without another word. I laid back on my bed with the sunlight streaming through curtains. This cat business was hard. My dad came in my room a while later, surprised to see that I was awake.
“Well, good to see you awake, Rave. How do you feel?”
“I’m okay I guess.”
He sat down on the step about a foot below me, holding some kind of professional letter.
“I’ve got news for you. Word’s gotten around town that we’re the newest family around.”
He straightened the hem of his loose, white shirt and looked at me, “I know you’re not going to like this, but this is how it is. You are a kitten, and so are your brothers. You will be labeled as a kitten until your 25th birthday. Although you have stopped growing physically, your mind is still developing. You are able to stay in school longer and still acquire information.”
“What? I’m a kitten? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve heard all day. I’m not a kit-“
“There’s nothing I can do about it, Raven. The childhoods of felines are longer than those of humans. This is how it is. Anyway, you are required to be enrolled in school for a few more years too. You, Rhea, Ren, and Robin will all start school next Monday.”
I shook my head,” Do they know that?”
“Yes, they know it. Rhea’s college credits will even transfer. That’s basically what it is. It’s a required college. The twins don’t really care one way or another, since they were still in school anyway.”
“This is ridiculous! How much school do I need? Maybe I’ll just go back to where we belong and -“
“Raven! Listen to me. I didn't make the laws. Go back, are you kidding? I’m sure word’s gotten around about us back there too. I can see it now ‘ CATS IN EVERTON’. That’s just what we need. Imagine what could happen if the caniticus found out about that,” Dad shook his head, watching me, “If you go back, I know you'll regret it. Just trust me, please.”
My dad left a few minutes later. I held the pack of papers we had received from the school in my right hand, but only stared at the door where my father recently left. I shook my head and let the papers fall out of them and onto the hardwood floor beneath me. I couldn't believe this was happening to me.
I walked backwards a few steps and sat down on my bed for a moment, letting this all sink in. It was so much at one time. So much to think about.
