Masked Revelations

“Actually I’m quite annoyed by your persistent interest in me. I thought by now you would have moved on.” I irritatingly pointed out as Michael removed his mask. “As a matter of fact, I should rejoin the party since you deceived me into coming here. But I’m tired of this situation. So state your business and let’s end this.”

When he turned his piercing blue eyes towards me, I was momentarily lost in its depths, and only came back to reality as he started to speak.

“Ash, I know that this situation might seem strange and that you don’t have any interest in any of us. I might add, we don’t quite understand why you so openly despise us. However I’m afraid you don’t have any choice but to join our group.”

At his last words a cold rage swept through my body. Who did he think he was to claim that I would have to join them? I tried to calm myself down, but not before angrily shaking my head and sort of using my braid as a whip against the people at my back. Hey it was small victory, but I took it.

Not having must choice, since my way back to the ball room was obstructed, I sat in a small divan.

“I highly doubt that.” I whispered and waited for his next words.

“We need you bec…”

I cut him off. “Sorry, but when we need something from a person we do not highjack them.” I stubbornly added.

“You know you’re starting to piss me off. Why do you think we had to resort to this? If you just once heard us out… But no, we had to cajole and chase you around. Do you think this was fun for us? You might not know it, but we have better things to do with our time. So now you are going to sit there and listen to what we have to say! Josh or Sarah, tell the story…” Michael finished, as he joined me at the divan.

“I’ll tell him Sarah” the brown haired boy said “You see Ash, millions of years ago there was a world just like this one; it was called Evenuis. The only difference was that in Evenuis a lot of other species lived alongside with the humans. They were the vampires, lycans, demons, giants, dwarves, elves, fairies and seers’ races.

Among them all, humans were perceived as weaker since they didn’t have strength, longevity, powers or any other special characteristic besides being able to reproduce faster and being able to cross species. So the humans were used as slaves, workers, foot soldiers, food and reinforcement when a race saw that their numbers were low, in other words a commodity.

It was the first vampire emperor, after the last Great War and organization of the different races in Empires, who first thought of creating laws to protect the humans, to give them permission to organize in clans and to own land. During these times the human race prospered and eventually evolved, surging in its midst a subspecies thought to be the consequence of cross breeding. This new subspecies was dubbed as mages and became one of the biggest secrets of humankind. Now they had people who could manipulate power, had unnatural longevity, were stronger and could offer some protection to the normal humans.” Josh narrated.

“But the mages were still weaker that the other races, probably because they didn’t know how to use their powers correctly.” Katherine added.

“Yes Katherine. But let’s not start debating and deviate from the story. Like I was saying, the mages were a well kept secret, but the vampire emperor was eventually informed. Time passed and the humans continued to be harassed, even with the protection of the law. Saddened with the situation, the vampire emperor devised a plan. Rounding all the clans he suggested the use of the races powers to create a cloned world where all the humans who desired could move to.

In this world, humans would have perfect conditions to flourish while every other race would be at a disadvantage. For instance, vampires and demons would be weak when exposed to the sun, lycans would be bound by the moon cycle, fairies would be weak outside the mounds created there, etc.

After some discussion, half the human clans accepted the offer, so the new world was created. The name of this new world was Terra, and it fell in the mages work description to protect the portals between worlds. The mages were also responsible for patrolling the races that visited and lived on their new dimension. However, not everyone was happy with this separation since many still thought of humans as mere puppets and that it was their natural right to do as they pleased with them.”

“Let me proceed from here Josh” Michael said while carefully watching my reaction to what was told.

“Quickly, the mages came to the conclusion that the places that needed more protection were the sites where they actually came to Terra. This was because these sites were powered and the different realities overlapped. So, as a preventative measure, they made their houses on these powerful lands and have been protecting them since then. Of course thousands of years have passed since the separation, and since then, the normal humans started to forget their origins. Even at some point in time, they tried to extinguish the mages. Nowadays, mages and the rest of the races have become myths.” Everybody was dead silent.

“Ok. Nice story and quite inventive.” I said sarcastically as I started to get up. “So now that our little interlude is over I hope you leave me alone.”

“Bound!” Michael barked and suddenly my body stopped responding to my commands. “We aren’t finished.”

“Calm down Michael! Ash, you are now bounded. I know this isn’t the best way to show you, but I hope that you can see the truth in our words. We aren’t simply friends; we are part of something more intimate; we are mages and we are the protectors of the strongest land in the world, Lunar Avenue. But to protect it effectively, we need to complete our circle.

The circle consists of thirteen members and as you can see, we only have eight. Your great aunt was our mentor, there are lots of things we should probably tell you about her, but at this instance what’s important for you to know, is that you are her heir and our 9th member.”

“What is surprising is that your parents don’t have a hint of power and that your powers have already awakened, but somebody bounded them” Tara thoughtfully said after touching my right hand.

“Well, I think he has already enough information to mull over.” Christopher told her.

“Now I’ll release you, but only after you promise not to overreact. We want you to talk again with us after you absorb what you heard.” Michael told me.

I simply nodded. Regaining control, I glared at them and with the last shred of dignity I had, I headed to the ball room.

I couldn’t stop thinking that he had reacted regally to the overdrive of information we just threw at him. But I couldn’t permit myself to pity him, I was Michael one of our leaders. This was necessary; problems were brewing in both worlds and we only had two months to reseal the wards at our coven territory.

“That went well” Josh said to nobody in particular.

“Come on, let’s enjoy the rest of the ball” Nathaniel urged.

Looking at the party going full blast, I couldn’t stop thinking that these people’s lives were so simple. They didn’t have to work with powers that if managed incorrectly could kill, politics that could affect the ways of our world and at the same time manage a normal life. But if anybody asked me if I would trade my powers to become ordinary, I knew that my answer would be no. Hell, this was no place to think of such grave subjects, so I smiled and pulled Tara, Katherine and Josh to the dance floor.

The beat of the music was pulsating through my body and with abandon I started to dance, forgetting everything about mages, quests and problems, even about Ash. Soon the rest of the group joined us, and I could see that everybody was having a good time.

The mood had changed since we made a small conquest and we were riding on the satisfaction high. Carelessly I looked around, and was surprised to see Ash on the dance floor like nothing had just happened. Subconsciously, I spied on him, appreciating how his body moved sensually to the rhythm of the music. I noticed the way his clothes, uncommon for this kind of party, hugged his body, leaving little to the imagination, and his alluring face showed a mysterious smile.

As the music changed, the tall body of Jazz leaned over Ash and whispered something in his ear. Seeing this, a possessive feeling took over me, and a thought filled my head ‘Don’t touch him… He’s mine!’
