May's Fall

“Once again, everybody’s an idiot but me!” One of Gordon’s many flaws character flaws was his constant gloating when things go well; even when none of these so-called “doubters” was within earshot.

“Nobody said this wouldn’t make money,” said Drew, “I wouldn’t have put money into it if I didn’t think it would work.”

“Nope, you didn’t believe me either,” Gordon snapped back.

“Fine,” Drew replied without looking up from the statistics from their newly formed site http://www.scandalous.com, “the site crashed last night from all the traffic. You need to have your boys in IT get on that.”

“Working Girls Putting in Work: May Shon” debuted on scandalous.com two weeks earlier. In three days, it became the first adult DVD to sell 50,000 copies. After a column about it appeared in the Los Angeles Times, it became a media juggernaut. Magazine shows like TMZ and Extra reported on it. Then, the local news stations of California. Within a week, stories were airing on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News Channel. From there, Gordon’s work was done for him. They hadn’t spent a dime marketing the film, yet by now, most of the country knew about it. To date, “Working Girls” had sold $500,000 copies. Orders began pouring in from adult shops around the world. So far, Drew was handling orders for 10 million units and they just kept coming in. Plus, the PPV version was making money hand over fist in major hotels worldwide. All told, it was a monstrous business venture: very little overhead and massive revenue equals huge profit.

Drew continued his tirade, “These porn guys are pathetically stupid. I came up with this idea less than a month ago and I’ve already outsold them. Hefner offers broads nobody’s ever heard of to pose nude in magazines! He thinks this is like 1972! That clown ass hillbilly Larry Flynt pays washed-up whores to DRESS UP like celebrities in porno flicks. Drew, seriously, we’re gonna drag those dusty old cadavers into the 21st century kicking and screaming.”

“Naw man, you were right,” Drew agreed, “it’s shocking that no one did this before us.”

“Well, when it’s all said and done, we’ll be buying those rag-tag outfits,” answered Gordon.

Bill Fowler, May’s agent had been taking calls and e-mails all week from corporate sponsors. They were all angrily dropping her for violating the morality clauses in her contracts. He didn’t know what to do to clean this up. May was by far his biggest client. It was beginning to look like she’d ruined both of their careers. Worse yet, May wasn’t answering his calls. After getting screamed at for the 5th time today, he decided to give her another call.

“Hello,” May answered.

“Oh, nice of you to finally answer,” Bill replied sarcastically.

“Uh, yeah, well, things haven’t been going so well,” said May.

“Yeah, I know! What were you thinking?” Bill asked. “Everyone’s dropping us. We just lost Nike! That was a million dollar deal!”

“Bill, my parents aren’t talking to me. April’s getting harassed at school,” explained May. “I… I just… I didn’t want to make that movie.”

Since Bill was only half-listening, he didn’t notice the quiver in her voice. Still focused on the money, Bill continued complaining, “We have a contract, how could you just go and cut side deals like that? You know, I would’ve gotten you more than 15 mil.”

May hadn’t been this upset since the day her parents found out about the film. She’d spent most of her time after that avoiding everyone and thus, avoiding the issue. She hadn’t cried that night, but she was pretty close to it now.

“You could’ve gotten me more?!” May screamed. “Can you get me my life back?! I’m a whore now!”

Still failing to grasp the situation, Bill replied, “Well how do you think this makes me look? Now, one of my clients is a porn star?”

May knew that Bill wasn’t aware that she’d been forced to do that movie, but she was too upset to care. So, she just turned off her phone.

Chris Matthews: Normally we don’t do sports on this program unless we’re talking my Phillies. But today we’re gonna talk a little tennis. Nobody watches it, well, I don’t watch it anyway, but this is a story. This is a huge story out of Hollywood. May Shon, 19 year old tennis PHENOM, has made a, shall we say adult film. Here to discuss is MSNBC contributor Michelle Bernard, as well as Joan Walsh of the nation. Now you guys are ladies, smart ladies, and I have a theory on why this became such a big story so fast. It’s the sex. This is Hardball. Let’s talk straight. People love to be in other people’s bedrooms. That’s what it comes down to, right Michelle?

Michelle Bernard: Well, not for me Chris. For me, it comes down to moral decay. I mean, is this the kind of thing we want young girls in this country looking up to? Is this what they should aspire too? What happened to going to college and starting a career? It’s sad that this is what Hollywood has to offer.

Matthews: She’s really had it rough, though. The L.A. Times is reporting that she’s lost all of her endorsement deals. All of them. I mean, why punish her?

Bernard: Look, companies are free to associate themselves with whomever they want. I wouldn’t want anything I was associated with to have anything to do with her either. Most Americans feel that way. This kind of immoral behavior just cannot be tolerated.

Joan Walsh: Chris, can I step in here.

Matthews: Go ahead.

Walsh: I have to agree with Michelle on this. Little girls look up to Ms. Shon. She seemed like such a nice young lady, too. It’s such a shame that she made this decision. She’s going to regret this. Not for the money, but for what it does to you as a person. She can’t take this back; she can’t erase it. I really feel sorry for her.

Matthews: Okay, I’m going to be careful here. But I’ve got to ask. Is this the next step in women’s lib? Is this just a thing, where a woman says, “Hey, I’m gonna go out and do something with my body that I want to do. And I’m gonna get paid for it. That’s my choice.” Is this where it’s going? Is this how it’s going to be? Maybe I’m just to old, I don’t know, but what do you say about this… Michelle?

Bernard: Well, I don’t know about that, Chris.

Walsh: I’m a feminist, but I don’t know if I’m THAT feminist.

*laughter and crosstalk*

Matthews: That’s why I have you ladies on - to keep me out of trouble.

Gordon flipped to ESPN, where they spent as much of their time as possible talking about May. TMZ did three stories on her, including one where there idiot cameraman followed a woman for a block and a half who just happened to look like May. Nobody was aware of it, but May hadn’t left her apartment in days.

As Gordon kicked back in his chair, his phone rang. It was Drew. “Hey,” Gordon answered, “you watching all this coverage we’re getting?”

“No,” Drew answered, “I’m watching potential dollars fly out the window.”

Gordon’s interest was piqued, “What are you talking about?”

“Man, Google May Shon,” Drew explained, “There’s copies of our flick all over these file sharing sites.”

“I’ll get legal on it,” Gordon replied.

“That’s cool, but we should do something else, too.” Drew continued, “Remember that shit with Erin Andrews? When people tried to download that video, it would contain a virus. It got to the point where people would be so afraid of destroying their computer that they stopped looking for it.”

“I’m dialing IT as we speak,” Gordon replied and disconnected the call.

In the days and weeks that followed, May rededicated herself to tennis. Because of her persistent nightmares, it was difficult for her to get a decent night’s sleep. Because she was consistently a subject of discussion on TV, she basically stopped watching it. Every show from Extra to Larry King Live was parading people May barely knew in front of the cameras to discuss “intimate details” of her life. She’d already withdrawn from family and real friends. As a result, she fell into almost a constant loop of workouts. May had always trained hard, but now, she was in overdrive. She played tennis all morning. She lifted weights all afternoon. When at home, there was rarely a minute when she wasn’t either on the treadmill or doing sit-ups. May was going to be in prime shape for her next match. She had her sight set on the French Open and her third straight Grand Slam title.

6 MONTHS LATER
*******************************************************************
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was now August and May’s life no longer resembled the quiet, reserved existence she once led. Her once close relationship with her sister April had almost completely deteriorated. Her parents were no longer speaking to her. Everywhere May went, she was constantly hounded by paparazzi. She’d fired her agent. May never felt more alone. At the same time, however, she never felt freer. She’d taken to having her groceries delivered. She was never much for hanging out and going to clubs, so she certainly wasn’t going now. Aside from her twice daily trips to the gym, she seldom left her condo at all. At first, it was difficult to get in. Everyone knew her there, so she wasn’t really treated like a celebrity. After all, she’d been a member of their tennis club since she was 11 years old. That was years before she turned pro.

Once the media storm was in full swing, however, it was impossible for May to get inside without being harassed. Once inside, it was impossible to get any work done. Reluctantly, she had to leave. She got a membership at a new gym and paid everyone to keep things quiet. She entered and exited through a service entrance in the back. It wasn’t perfect. But, she was able to get things done without too many problems.

Through it all, May was still getting a few calls a week from Maria Tovar, her best friend from high school. May met Maria in 6th grade, and they became fast friends. They had similar interests and were both good in school. The both were the daughters of immigrants. They were so inseparable, some of their teachers used to call them collectively M&M. Things changed a lot sophomore year when May dropped out to turn pro. They were still very good friends. It just became harder for them to find time to hang out together. Once Maria left home to go to Stanford, they almost never saw each other.

Lately, May knew she couldn’t trust most people. People she didn’t even know in high school were telling lies about her to anyone that would listen. For some reason, when Maria called this time, May answered, “Hello?”

“Oh my God… girl, what happened?” Maria asked.

“I haven’t been feeling well… I don’t know. I shouldn’t have been ignoring you,” May conceded. “How are you?”

“I’m fine, girl,” Maria began, “But you know that. So, why’d you do it?”

“I don’t know,” said May. Her voice began to quiver, “I messed up. I thought I had to.”

“I don’t understand,” said Maria, “you were with Tommy for almost a year before you guys did it. I see all these assholes from school talking shit. Then I call you and you don’t answer.”

May began to tear up. She’d been so upset lately that she didn’t realize how much she missed her friend. “I thought that April was in trouble. I didn’t know what else to do. Now my parents won’t speak to me.” May began sobbing loudly, “I’ve become a whore.”

“You’re not a whore,” said Maria, “you just made a really bad decision. If you’re a whore, then I’m like the most disgusting slut on the planet.”

May suddenly felt desperate. She hadn’t really confided in anyone throughout this whole ordeal. “What am I going to do?”

“Hey girl,” Maria began, “we’ll get through this. I promise you. I have an idea: Why don’t you fly out to Stanford on the first flight you can get? I’ll get on Orbit and get you a ticket right now. You don’t need to be in LA anyway.”

May cleared her throat before answering, “But the U.S. Open starts in 3 weeks. I have to be here to train?”

“Look, you can workout anywhere. You think we don’t tennis courts here?” Maria asked. “Papi just gave me 5 grand. I’m getting you a ticket and you’re coming to stay with me. C’mon, at least for a few days.”

“Okay,” replied May, “I guess I should pack.”

“I’ll e-mail you a ticket for tomorrow morning. Everything’s going to be fine,” Maria insisted.
