I didn't do any research on my shrink like I should have, I know she's very unrealistic when it comes to her field, but then again Sarah is also very...unordinary. I've only ever had 2 psych classes, one I slept through and the other was...subpar in my opinion...
James is beginning to experience...changes, but not like the ones they show in the embarassing videos in school. For once he's feeling a breath of fresh air and that really starts to show in this chapter when he lets sarah in on a little secret...
I apologize for the short chapter, I know it's VERY short compared to the others. But I felt special detail needs to be paid to the conversation about to happen between Antonio and Daniel, it didn't seem fair to tag it on the end of this chapter...
Daniel sighed and walked into the department dressed in his usual blue uniform. He prayed no one would notice the giant purple hickey on his neck. James seemed unaffected by the whole affair, he walked close behind Daniel and gawked right back at those who stared at him. He made a bee line for Sarah’s office, letting himself in as she stood and smiled at them both.
“I’m glad to see you again James. I hear you’re doing much better now.”
The boy nodded, a small smile pulling at his lips. Daniel softened, he actually smiled.
“I’m going to talk to the chief; I hear he wants to have a word with me. Do you mind keeping an eye on him for me?”
He motioned towards James as the boy took a seat. Sarah seemed more than happy.
“Sure, good luck with the chief, I’m sure he’s going to love whatever story you tell him about that lovely mark on your neck.”
Daniel felt his face turn red as he shot her a warning look. She said nothing more as he turned and left her office. Greg attacked him.
“Hey! The chief has been asking for you all morning!”
His wide smile slowly dropped as his eyes fell to the hickey and then back up to his eyes.
“So what’s her name?”
Daniel raised an eyebrow at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Greg smirked and poked the tender mark.
“I want to know what her name is idiot.”
Daniel let out an exasperated sigh and moved towards the chief’s office. Greg followed him persistently.
“You know you shouldn’t have a woman over at your place when you’re supposed to be taking care of that kid.”
Daniel closed the door behind him as he bravely faced the chief. The man seemed distracted as he smoked and looked through a file on his desk.
“Antonio has been asking for you for two days now.”
Daniel’s jaw clenched before he could prevent his reaction, the chief looked up at him, his eyes falling on the hickey.
“Well really he’s been asking for whoever is taking care of his pet now. What happened?”
The chief jutted a finger towards his neck as Daniel sighed, was it really that noticeable?
“Nothing, it’s just a bruise.”
The chief snorted.
“Did you burn yourself with the curling iron? That’s what my daughter tells me every time one of those pops up. I may have been born at night but it wasn’t last night Daniel.”
Daniel sighed.
“It’s nothing really. It was an accident.”
The chief looked amused.
“Oh? I’d like to hear this.”
He leaned back in his chair, a smile on his lips said he was ready to laugh.
“He sleeps in my bed and I sleep on the couch. He was having a night terror so I went to try and wake him. He bit me before I managed to get him to snap out of it.”
Daniel braced himself, the boy had gone through a traumatic event, his story was plausible. The chief stared at him a moment before he let out a sigh.
“Alright, I’ll let it go this time. If I see you in here with something like that again from that boy I’m removing you from this case. I can’t have people thinking something is going on. Understood?”
Daniel nodded, glad that his story was legitimate enough to pass if someone questioned him.
“Now as for this Antonio business. It’s up to you if you want to talk with him, I won’t make you go and I won’t stop you if you agree.”
It didn’t take him more than a second to decide.
“I want to talk to him, but not in an interrogation room. I don’t want anyone listening in and I don’t want the conversation recorded.”
The chief raised an eyebrow at him.
“What if he says something that can be used in trial?”
Daniel shot him a very dark look.
“What if he says something that will take the boy out of my custody? You know he won’t react well to being moved again.”
The chief sighed.
“Very well, you can talk to him at the holding cell. Keep your phone on you; I want to be able to reach you if I have to.”
Daniel nodded.
James sat in Sarah’s chair as the woman smiled warmly at him. She seemed to be glowing just because of his presence there.
“I’m very glad you came, you look much better than the last time I saw you. How do you like things at Daniels?”
James tried to smile at her but the feeling was strange, he wasn’t sure how to act around her, how to use his body language when Antonio had taught him to hide it.
“I like it there. He never leaves me alone.”
Sarah nodded.
“Yes he’s supposed to stay with you at all times, we understand there are still those out there that would want to take you back or have you killed.”
James swallowed. Sarah cocked her head at him.
“Is there anything you would like James?”
He glanced up at her.
“What do you mean?”
She sighed and began to organize the papers before her.
“Well, very soon Daniel will have to come back to work for just a few hours a day and you’ll be left alone at the apartment. He has paper work and other case work he has to organize and turn in to the chief. During these times we’ll have an officer posted at the door to Daniel’s apartment and you won’t be allowed to leave. Was there anything that you wanted for those times when you’re alone? Anything you want to do with your time?”
Daniel shrank a little in his chair, his hands fidgeting in his lap.
“Can you…teach me how to read?”
She blinked at him.
“You can’t read?”
James blushed a little and met her gaze.
“A little, but not very well. I…I only went to third grade.”
Sarah smiled at him.
“It’s alright; it’s not your fault. If you want I could hire you a tutor. They would teach you to read and write, math, english and anything else you wanted.”
James smiled a very genuine thankful smile.
“I would like that.”
