chapter 5

“GOOD MORNING LADIES!”

Josie couldn’t understand how Jackie could sleep through it. Every five minutes a residential advisor would open the doors and yell it. Josie couldn’t possibly wait until 7:30 to leave the dorm if she had to keep listening to that. She got dressed, did her make up and threw her hair up and went outside. Jerome, Brian and gangsta two were the only ones outside again. Josie thought it was good to fall into a routine so easily. She stood off to the side again and lit a cigarette.

“Hey Josie can I holla a minute without you going off with super crazy there again?” Jerome asked walking towards her. Brian hadn’t even acknowledged her, but his interest piqued when he heard that.

“Sure.” Josie said, figuring she could use breakfast as an escape, if needed.

“So whats going on with you and Nick? You two talking or something?” he asked. Josie had discovered “talking” was like dating, since dating was impossible, people talked before getting together.

“Me and Nick aren’t talking.”

“Really? I was scared for a minute there. I had heard something about a walk by the old dorms in the moon light.” Josie scowled at Brian.

“Don’t look at me, I didn’t say shit.” Brian said.

“Maybe not about the dorms.” she replied, Brian looked confused.

“And then last night when I was in Jeremy’s room,” he motioned to gangsta two “Nick came in, he’s his room mate, Nick said the two of you were making out over there,“ he gestured towards the old dorms, Jerome was the type that talked with his hands “said you couldn’t take your hands off him. He also said you made the cutest little sounds when he touched your -”

“Leave it alone.” Brian warned.

“Hey all I’m building up to is she ain’t even been here 72 hours yet. We don’t know who she is, she could be as crazy as Nick, she could be a pathological liar. Going to the old dorms and making out-”

“Jerome, just drop it.” Brian warned again.

“I’m going to breakfast.” Josie said, walking away. She didn’t want to hear any more.

“Going to the old dorms and making out with dudes, sounds like she’s more of a slut than a virgin.” Jerome said. Josie hadn’t heard anything after the part about making out with dudes, she been too far by then to hear. She went down a few stairs and then down the path to the cafeteria entrance. She went in and decided that since she was here, she might as well eat. There was scrambled eggs, sausage, and pancakes. On a counter near the wall they had a few different cereals and a milk dispenser. In the salad bar they had some fruit and bagels and granola bars. Near the soda machines there was a massive coffee urn and Josie decided she could use a cup. She grabbed a bagel and sat down in a booth near the exit. Josie took her time eating, not looking forward to going back outside. She decided she enjoyed the cafeteria much more when it was empty. After she finished her bagel she refilled her coffee and sat back down to enjoy it. About quarter past seven she went back outside and up the hill. She was relieved to find that Jerome and Brian were gone. She sat on the bench next to Jeremy, formerly known as gangsta two.

“They went to breakfast?” she asked “I must be lucky to have missed them.”

“They didn’t go to breakfast.“ Jeremy said smiling.

“Dorms?” Josie asked, confused.

“In that general direction you could say. Below the dorms actually… Mr. K’s office.”

“Mr. K’s office?” she asked.

“Yea, apparently when Jerome called you a slut, it got him on Brian’s bad side.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m sayin, rumble on the hill. If you’d waited 5 more seconds before leaving you woulda seen it.”

“Wait, you’re saying they were fighting cause of me?”

“Yeah. Brian uses any excuse he can to get into a fight.”

“Well that makes me feel better.”

“You know, Jerome shouldn’t have said all that shit. It doesn’t matter how much experience you have, or don’t have. You’re a pretty bitch, you could get any guy you wanted.”

“A pretty bitch?” she laughed.

“Well yea, and shit, you don’t have to impress anyone but yourself. Do what you want, when you want and who you want, how you want. Just make yourself happy.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” Josie said, getting up to talk to Jackie, who was finally coming outside.

At 11:30 the bell rang for lunch and Josie went down to the cafeteria. She stood in line for what seemed like hours before getting to the front of the line. She cringed when she had an overloaded tray shoved into her hands by Brian. “What the hell are you doing here?” she asked.

“I’m in culinary. I help out in the cafeteria when they need it. You better eat that, I put it all together just for you.”

“What’d you use to poison it?”

“You’re holding up the line, get out of here.”

Josie started walking down the short hall towards the cafeteria when she slowed down to grab some cookies. She jumped when she heard a voice behind her.

“Starting trouble again, Miss Reynolds?” she turned around to see Mr. K.

“I don’t try to start anything, Mr. K.” she said.

“I heard you started a fight this morning… I’ll be watching you. You know what they say, its always the quiet ones.”

“And I wasn’t even around to see it.” she frowned. “I’ll try to be louder.” Josie threw a few cookies on her tray and went to sit down. She ended up in a booth with Jackie and Chris.

“Whats with the food?” Chris asked, looking at her tray which contained 2 apples, a banana, two bologna and cheese sandwiches, a bowl of macaroni salad, a blue berry muffin, a salad and three chocolate chip cookies.

“Ask Brian. You want it?” she said, taking her three cookies. She didn’t want anything “made just for her” from Brian. Jackie grabbed the muffin while Chris ate everything else. Josie just nibbled on her cookies.

After lunch Josie, Jackie and Chris went up the hill to smoke a cigarette. After the bell rang she went back inside to watch a few videos until 3:30. When the bell rang she went outside to the smoking area. Brian was on his bench, Chris was sitting next to him and Jay was standing in front of them. Josie decided to sit on the curb with Jackie. She didn’t want to talk to Brian ever again. She shouldn’t have ever talked to him! She scolded herself. She’d had no problems at all before she talked to him. She decided right there she wasn’t going to talk to him anymore. She lit a cigarette and Jackie leaned towards her.

“You smoke right?”

“Yea.”

“Take the drug test yet?”

“Yesterday.”

“Wanna come smoke with me and Joe?”

“Sure. Who’s Joe?”

“You’ll meet him.” she said, standing. Josie threw her cigarette and followed. They crossed the hill and went down to the bus stop where Josie met Joe. Joe was in the “gangsta” category but Josie instantly liked him. Quite simply, he was a pot head. After they were done smoking, Jackie went back to the dorms. Josie and Joe stayed at the bus stop just talking and laughing about everything when Mr. K showed up.

“Afternoon.” he said.

“Good afternoon, Mr. K.” Josie said, smiling, but mentally chanting ‘oh shit’ over and over.

“Well, I’d love to stay and chat but I’m having an asthma attack and I need my inhaler and that’s back in my room.” Joe said, getting up and walking away.

“Mr. Stevens, you don’t have asthma.” Mr. K said, Joe just kept on walking. Mr. K took a deep breath in. “Smell that nice fresh air,” he said, staring at Josie. “Mmmm but wait, I smell something else too. I was right, it IS always the quiet ones.” Josie stopped smiling and swallowed. “Stand up, and follow me, Miss Reynolds.”

“Please, call me Josie.” she said, it was honestly the only thing she could think of. When she didn’t stand immediately Mr. K took hold of her arm and started walking her up the hill. “Must you hold my hand?” she asked, feeling daring since she was pretty sure she was getting thrown out. He’d been holding one of her biceps and he squeezed a little tighter.

“I’m not holding your hand, I’m escorting you.”

“You’re in the escort service?“ she giggled.

“Miss Reynolds-” he began.

“Josie!” she demanded.

“I’m going to be nice.” he said lowering his voice and puling her down the ramp to the girls dorms. “I’m gonna bring you to your room, and I don’t want to hear that you’ve left it until 8.”

“That’s three hours and thirty seven minutes away.” Josie said, looking at her watch.

“That’s three hours and thirty seven minutes I want you to stay in your room. That’s all. Keep in mind I could have you thrown out. MALE ON FLOOR!” he yelled as they entered the dorms. He pulled a residential advisor aside and asked where Josie’s room was.

“What we’re not on speaking terms? You couldn’t ask me where my room was?” Josie asked, annoyed. The advisor told him and he pulled her into the south wing to her door. He grabbed his keys out of his pocket and opened the door. “And you have my fucking room key?”

“Watch the language. This key goes to all the rooms.” he pushed the door open and pushed Josie inside. “Three hours and thirty five minutes.” he said, closing the door on Josie.

“What happened?” Jackie asked.

“Got caught.”

“Ah. What’d you say to get out of a termination?”

“I told him to call me Josie.”

“He’s probably just being nice since your new. Probably figures he’s scared you out of doing it again.” Jackie said, and Josie just laughed. “I’m going to the machine for some cheetos. Want anything?”

“Skittles. And starburst, and bubble gum.” Josie said, giving her a handful of quarters. “As many as you can buy.”
