Eye Of The Beholder

Truth:

Nero stood and offered his chair to Lilly. By the mere mention of his name she had begun to shake uncontrollably. What had he said wrong? Was this a delayed reaction to his appearance?

‘What do you mean you know my name Lilly?’

‘Stanford it’s the name of the founders of the town. They have lived here for centuries. I had heard about the last member of the family being killed but ….. Was your mother Ruby Stanford?’

‘Yes how did you know that and what do you mean dead?’

Nero couldn’t take in that Lilly seemed to know so much about his family when he knew so little. After the accident his mother hardly looked at him let alone talked to him. What was Lilly talking about? She now sat staring at the floor deep in thought. Something about the connection to his name had affected her deeply. Were they connected somehow?

‘I did a project on our towns history when I was in school and your family used to run the town they held major ownership on many of the businesses. When your mother died your uncle took control of most of them. I knew your mother had had a child but he disappeared about 16 years ago everyone just thought he had died but you are him aren’t you?’

‘Yes!’

‘But I don’t understand if you are here and alive then…….. I don’t know what’s going on. You have money. Serious money why are you hiding out in this thing?’

Lilly suddenly realised that she didn’t actually know where here was. She took in her new surroundings. With everything that had happened in the last twenty minutes she had hardly had chance to. She was now in a slightly bigger room. Again with the same bare stone walls yet this had a greater amount of furniture in. there was one chair which she was sat in, a table, a bookcase holding many books, yet that was it. There were non of the usual modcons that were often in homes. No TV, stereo so on. A home made fire burned in the middle of the floor.

‘This thing as you put it has been my home for the last 16 years. When my uncle died he said it was best that I was out of harms way that way no one could hurt me. I don’t understand what you mean about money though. I remember when I was little that I lived in a big house but with the accident I was usually only allowed in one or two rooms. I never really went outside. I don’t understand any of this. Lilly I’m so confused! Listen I will take you back the best thing you can do is forget you have ever seen me please don’t tell anyone I’m here!’

‘Nero your burns are nothing to be ashamed of and no one will hurt you. As I said they are common place everyone has a scar or two and yes some are like yours and some are even worse. But I really think you need to get back into the world. It has missed you and you have had so much taken away from you already!’

‘I’m better off here Lilly!’

‘No your not. It’s not healthy you being here you need sunlight and friends and to get out and live. I know it’s difficult after so long on your own but you can do it. I will help you. You seem to have helped me many times. Even saving me tonight you can trust me. I swear on my life.’

‘Why did you have such a reaction to my name then?’;

‘That can wait Nero.’
Lilly stood and walked over to him. She placed a hand on his chest, feeling his heart beat through his shirt. She couldn’t believe that he had been so mistreated over something so insignificant as a few burns. Lilly feared though that his emotional scars may be much deeper.

‘Look I have an idea. My parents are away tomorrow night. I could come and find you tomorrow night and you could come and stay with me. You wouldn’t have to go out in the town just yet but you could at least get out of here for a while?’

‘I don’t know Lilly?’

‘Take tonight to sleep on it and if you decide you want to take the chance I will meet you at the edge of the wood at nightfall tomorrow. I want to help Nero I really do!’

He took her hand in his and squeezed it. He nodded his head and began to lead her up the stairs in the corner of the room. When they reached a stone door Nero pushed it open and led her outside. The air was fresh now. The stars shone above and the moon lit all surfaces. Lilly turned and the site before her shocked her into words.

‘You live in a crypt?’
