“Yes…” Ember sighed. “I did…” It was time to come completely open with the girl. “In fact it is why you're hear; do you want to know more?”

"Oh my god!" Saphyre murmured then whirled away from Ember and was running down the halls with the files tucked closely to her chin. This had been her worst fear as a child! She’d watched “Firestarter” and things had went VERY badly for poor Charlie! Her heart pounded; she HAD to get out of the building! After that, she didn’t know what to do.

She’d been ten years old when she’d found out she could create fire using only her hands. On a winter day, she’d gotten lost on the mountain behind her house and spent the night lost and alone. When a twig snapped she’d screamed and thrown out her hands to defend against whatever monster was about to eat her; to her absolute surprise a fireball flew from her fingertips. It hit some nearby pine straw and it had immediately caught fire. She experimented all night until she fell asleep exhausted but secure with the knowledge that she could do it again if she tried hard enough.

After that, she’d kept her ability secret thinking she’d be taken away and experimented on, after all she watched TV and that’s what people did to people like her! Her only hope was the X-men; which she watched avidly on Saturday afternoons, she’d hoped that one day she’d find her Professor Xavier and maybe a Gambit too. She still harbored a crush on him!

“Come on… Come on!!” She ran for the elevator pushing the button frantically, the door slid open and Saphyre darted in looking over her shoulder for signs of anyone chasing her. She was surprised that no one had followed her, but didn’t question her good fortune. She leaned her head against the wall of the elevator panting and scared, she wasn’t out of the woods yet; someone could still be waiting for her in the lobby. The elevator jerked to an abrupt stop, Saphyre whipped her head up and began frantically pushing buttons.

“No… no… no!!” She wailed. A small flicker of flames rose from the floor whirling into a larger column then took on the shape of a woman. Saphyre flattened herself against the wall and scooted away from the flames her eyes wide with fear. “What the hell!?? What the hell!?” Saphyre was yelling over and over.

The flames extinguished with a hiss and Ember stood there looking very calm despite the fact that she was annoyed, Saphyre’s frightened blue eyes darted over Ember’s form. Ember took a step toward her and Saphyre flinched away from her.

"Don't hurt me!" Saphyre yelled backing away and calling up a small fireball in her hand. That was probably a ridiculous thing to do seeing as how Ember was very obviously much stronger than her. Saphyre felt like the floor suddenly gave way beneath her; then everything faded to a small black cone of light. She knew this place… she was safe here.

“Who are you?!” Saphyre demanded her voice now harsh and angry. Her entire body had easily assumed an attacking posture, two beach ball sized fireballs blazed in her hands as she stared Ember in the eyes. “And what the hell are you doing to her?!”

Ember had been trying to calm the terrified girl, but suddenly she was faced with an entirely new entity. This one had almost brownish red eyes almost like clay, and she was obviously hostile. Ember immediately recognized this new person for what she was, either a split personality of the sweet gentle Saphyre; or a product of one of Saphyre’s dormant powers… an Astral Projection.

“I’m December Allen…” Ember smiled softly and backed off to show this girl she meant Saphyre no harm. “I don’t believe we’ve met…”

“Well we have now!” She responded ignoring Ember’s hint. “You’d better get this elevator moving and let us out of here; or I’ll rip the doors off myself!”

“If I do… will you at least hear me out first?” Ember asked, she could tell this girl meant business. Despite the fact that she probably didn’t have the kind of strength it would take to follow through with the threat, she would die trying.

“How bout you get this rig moving first?” Saphyre growled. “Then maybe we negotiate.”
