The Dance
‘Yep, this is lame' I said to myself as I looked across the very Uncrowded dance floor. I had made it a point to be late, thinking I would just blend in once the dance was in full swing. Boy was I wrong. I laughed out loud at the scene before me. All of the girls were on one side of the dance floor, while the guys occupied the other side. It reminded me of a bad teen movie. Wanting to escape the 80's music blaring throughout the metal building, I headed for the restrooms across the ‘under the sea' theme. Once inside I was relieved to find it unoccupied. I crossed the short distance to the sink, and looked at myself in the mirror. I still looked the same to me. I guess its because I see myself everyday. I still didn't know how much weight I had lost, but I did know it was a considerable amount. None of my clothes fit. Even the simple knee length dress I was wearing, made me look frumpy. Luckily tomorrow was the last weigh-in before we left for home. Actually I was excited to see how much all of my hard work had paid off. It kind-of felt good being excited about something. Taking a final look in the mirror, I headed for the door.
Stepping back ‘under the sea' I took a second to scan the crowd. Not seeing who I was looking for, I found a seat at an empty table. ‘God this fucking sucks' i said to myself as I watched a couple of counselor's trying to coerce the campers to dance. Fighting with myself on weather or not I should leave, or wait to see who shows up I felt someone walk up behind me. Not knowing who it was I stared straight ahead, until I felt hot breath on my ear.
"Fat kids sure know how to party huh?" Brice said as he slid into the seat next to me.
Laughing I said " Yea, I am having way too much fun."
He giggled a little " Yea, for this to be such a ‘big' event," he scooted closer as to not be overheard "this is pretty fucking lame.........as always."
"As always huh.......just how many of these things have you subjected yourself to.....cause I heard you could die from overexposure."
He busted out laughing with that, and leaned a little closer " I've been to many more than I'll ever admit too."
Putting on a frown, I patted his hand that was sprawled across the table."poor thing."
"Yea, but there is an upside to these things," He said as he leaned back in his chair.
Curious as to what upside this ‘dance' could possibly have I asked "Oh, yea.....what's that?"
"See, everyone is here, and since everyone is here," he pointed to a door in the corner "it means no one is out there. I mean on dance night.... we could have run of the camp if we wanted. No counselors sneaking about just trying to catch somebody doing something, you know cause they are all in here."
Smiling maybe a little too widely I said, "Good point."
Leaning close once again, his lips almost touching my ear he whispered, "So do you want to get out of here?"
Glancing around nervously I asked, "when, now?"
He looked me in the eye and said, "Now is just as good a time as any."
Giving him a nervous smile, I thought to myself, ‘what the hell, right. What are they going to do kick me out, I think it's a little late for that' "Um, okay." I told him.
"Okay, so you walk out first, and I'll be behind you shortly." I gave him a nod and causally made my way toward the door.

Once outside I waited under a tree for Brice to appear. It was taking longer than I expected. Thinking maybe he got stopped or changed his mind, I decided to head back to my cabin. Then out of nowhere I felt someone poke me in the ribs and I screamed. Brice started laughing, and I lightly slapped his arm, "You scared the shit out of me." I said with a smile.
Looking at me trying to hold back a grin he said, "I'm sorry."
Smiling devilishly I said, "It's okay, cause payback is a bitch."
"Fair enough, now come on I'm starved, and I refuse to eat a fucking veggie roll." he said as he took my hand and began leading me toward the main office building.
Trying to sound casual I asked," Where are we going?"
Giving my hand a little squeeze he answered, " We are going to my dads office to get some stuff, then I'm going to take you to my favorite spot."
Letting him lead me down the dirt beaten path, I had an overwhelming sense of ease. Besides Clarissa, I had never felt this comfortable with another person. Especially a guy....... a very sexy ass guy. I felt like I could say anything, and he would never judge me. It was strange and exhilarating. Maybe I had changed.
Once we reached the main office doors, Brice dropped my hand to dig through his pocket for a key. After unlocking the door he opened it and ushered me in. I could feel the palm of his hand lightly on the small of my back. Locking the door behind him, he took the lead, "follow me."
The main office reminded me of the office at my high school, but I could see a door on the other side of the long counter with a sign that read ‘Dr. Carl Palmer'. That was the next door we entered through. This room was similar to a principals office. While Brice was going through drawers I took the time to look at the photographs that covered on full wall. There were several of Brice ranging form the time he was a small boy, until now. I smiled when I reached a picture of him dressed up like a clown.
"Ah, hah, I knew there was some junk food in here somewhere." He said as he began pulling out chips, candy bars, cokes, and candy. "So, um, what would you like?" he asked.
Walking around the desk I looked at him and said, "none for me thanks, I had a veggie roll."
Looking amused he said, "Oh, come on, one piece of candy will not hurt you, at least have a coke or something."
Giggling I reached over and plucked a coke from its spot on the desk, "there you happy?"
Picking out his munchies he said, "Nope not yet." Once he gathered his junk foods of choice he began going through more drawers and cabinets.
Curiously I asked, "what are you looking for now?"
"You'll see," was all he said. Leaning under his father's desk I heard him mumble something I couldn't quite make out, so I asked, "what was that?"
"I said, my father never disappoints me," he replied while holding up a silver flask. "I know he keeps some scotch around."
Scrunching up my nose I said, " I don't really drink."
He smiled and said, "Neither do I, but this is a special occasion, you get to go home tomorrow, don't you want to celebrate.'
Pondering it for a moment I decided why not have a little fun. "Okay, but not too much."
"Definitely, come on lets get out of here." he said as he stuffed all of the items into his pockets.

"Wow, this is really cool," I said as I stood on the wooden platform in the middle of the lake.
"Yea, I like to come out here at night when I get a chance. No one can see you and its private."
On the canoe ride over, I stated getting nervous, not knowing where I was going, but once we reached the platform I began to relax again. "Oh, God look at the moon," I said. "It's so bright, for some reason everything looks different from out here."
"Yea, that's why this is my favorite spot," he said as he unloaded his pockets onto the platform.
Holding out a can of coke for me to take he said, " Here, um.... have a seat."
Taking the coke I tried to find a comfortable way to sit in the dress I was wearing, considering we had no chairs. I made a mental note not to ever wear a dress again. Giving up I just crossed my legs indian style, and pulled my dress tight around my knees. Once I was settled I glanced over at Brice to find him looking at me with amusement in his eyes.
"What?" I asked.
He gave me a movie star grin and said, "Absolutely nothing." He stepped beside me and plopped down on the deck with a loud thud. For a moment we just sat there in silence. Surprisingly it was comfortable, no uneasiness, waiting for one or the other to speak. Eventually he did break the silence. "You know, I have never brought anyone out here with me before.'
Looking over at his silhouette I said sarcastically, "Oh....... now I feel all special and shit."
Giving me a soft look he just said, "Well you should."
Looking at him in the eye I said, " Is that right........so......what makes me so special."
"I don't know, " he answered simply.
‘Wow' I thought to myself. ‘ I can't believe I am sitting here in the middle of a lake, in a dress, with a fine ass guy that thinks I special. Okay, I can wake up anytime now, better yet let me pinch myself.'
Reaching over for the silver flask, Brice unscrewed the lid and took a tiny swig. "Ugg, tastes like shit.....want some?"
I laughed as I took the flask from his hand. I had never had scotch before........ I never really had much of anything before. A few sips of beer, and an occasional taste of a strawberry daiquiri. Thinking it can't be that bad, I put the flask to my lips and took a gulp, and nearly choked. "Ewwww..... how can people enjoy that, that shit is fucking rank." I said handing the flask back to Brice.
He chuckled softly, "I told you it tastes like shit, but I don't think people drink it for the taste."
"They must not," I said still trying to recover.
‘Here," he said handing me my coke. "Wash it down with this."
Taking the drink from him I did as he said and it helped a lot.
"So, Melanie, can I ask you a question?" he asked.
Being my usual smart ass self I replied, "you just did."
He leaned over nudging my shoulder. "You know what I mean."
I smiled and said, "shoot."
"Why did your parents send you here, I mean, the people that usually come here......um......don't usually, you know........well, lets just say, they need it way more than you."
Feeling my cheeks heat, I was glad he couldn't see the embarrasment on my face. "Well," I said before clearing my throat. "My parents seem to think I am depressed, and they thought that if I lost weight, I would feel better about myself." I told him honestly.
"Do you?" was his next question.
Taking a moment to really think about my answer, I reached over and grabbed the flask from his hand. Taking a long pull and chasing it with my coke I finally answered. " I'm not sure, I mean, I feel better, but I don't know. It's just so hard to explain." I told him as truthfully as I could.
We sat silently for a few minutes, just kind-of enjoying not talking. "You know what really sucks, we just met this morning, and tomorrow we will both be gone, probably never to see each other again."
Shocked that he had just about taken the words right out of my mouth, all I could utter was, "Yea."
For the next few hours we just talked. About our friends, our favorite bands, our future plans, about how we both wished we had met earlier. We played with each other. Making jokes and sharing jabs. It was the most fun I had, had in a long time. I didn't want it to end. But eventually all good things must come to an end. With the moon high above us I heard Brice let out a long sigh.
"I think its time we headed back, I'm sure the dance is over by now." He stated. Not wanted to sound to disappointed I agreed.
After gathering the litter we made, and putting it into the canoe, I smiled and said. "This has been fun. I'm glad we met, at least I'll have one good memory of this place."
Surprising me Brice took my hand and pulled me close to him. Staring into my eyes, unlike anyone before him he whispered two words......"You're beautiful." At that moment I could feel tears start to sting my eyes. He cupped my face in his hands and said, " I have the feeling no one has ever said that before, and I wanted to be the first."
With that he pressed his lips to mine. At first it felt so foreign, and at the same time like I had done it a million times before. He ran his tongue across my bottom lip, and I opened my mouth slightly to let him explore. Not wanting the kiss to end I wrapped my arms around his neck and pressed against him as much as possible. He rubbed lazy circles across my back. It felt amazing. It felt right. When the kiss finally ended, because we had to breath I just smiled. I couldn't help it. That was like the most amazing first kiss ever. Feeling elated and silly and uninhibited and maybe a little inebriated I led him to the edge of the deck and asked, " you know what I said about pay backs?"
Laughing he said, "Yea, am I forgiven now?"
Throwing him a mischievous grin I said, "Not hardly," as I pushed him into the water.
The look on his face when he emerged was priceless.
Feeling bad, trying to control my laughter I leaned down to give him a hand. He reached for me and smirked, " your not getting away that easy," he said as he pulled me into the water......... "Cause, pay backs a bitch."
Stepping back ‘under the sea' I took a second to scan the crowd. Not seeing who I was looking for, I found a seat at an empty table. ‘God this fucking sucks' i said to myself as I watched a couple of counselor's trying to coerce the campers to dance.
