Chapter Five
Rae watched him leave and clutched her towel around her body as if it would protect her from her own confused thoughts. To say that she was surprised and that David\'s openness was unexpected was the understatement of the millenia and she was now torn between the image of him as a surrogate father for all of these years and now as a potential lover. She didn\'t even know why she was thinking about this, but she was, in fact, it was something that she had found herself thinking about it a lot after she had suspected him of having similar thoughts. Reality, however, was very different from what went on in her mind, and while it was perfectly normal to entertain thoughts of being intimate with David in her mind, it was quite another thing to actually do it.
Her thoughts floated around in a similar circle while she got dressed and combed out her unruly hair. She needed a trim again, her hair was dry and brittle at the ends, but that was the farthest thing from her mind. Deciding to let her hair dry down for once, she left her room knowing that she wouldn\'t have to face David quite yet. That and she was feeling hungry.
Rae found David\'s note as she was heading to the refrigerator and smiled that he would be so thoughtful. She found the $40 he had left her and the phone book on the table and ordered her favorite kind of pizza: pepperoni, white onions and extra cheese.
She went back to her room and retrieved her book from her bedside table and flopped down on the couch, trying to think of anything but what had happened with David earlier. Rae immersed herself in the story and was brought back to reality only by the ring of the doorbell. She paid the pizza guy, tipped him nicely, and dug in. David had already been gone for 2 hours and it was close to 6 PM. Although he had said in his note that he would be back late, she was still worried about him. She had picked up the phone and had started dialing his cell phone number before she realized what she was doing and was relieved to find that it was turned off. Rae had absolutely no idea what she was going to say to him if he had actually answered.
Putting the phone back down in the charger she went to the kitchen to look for the wine she and David had shared the night before. Locating it, finally, she poured herself a giant glass and brought it and the bottle back to the living room. She settled back in with her book and some pizza and lost herself once again in its pages. When she looked at the clock again it said 10:24 and she realized that all of the wine and half of the pizza was gone.
Sleepiness came over her like a tidal wave and she blinked several times to clear her head. David still was not back yet and Rae was concerned that something terrible had happened to him. She resolved to stay up for him and wait for his return. She put her now empty glass on the coffee table with the pizza box and empty wine bottle and resumed reading, perched like a cat on the corner of the sofa. Soon she couldn\'t fight it anymore and slowly drifted off, head lagging in her lap and book lying open at her feet.
Rae drifted in and out of confusing dreams where she alternately had sex and didn\'t have sex with David. Her troubled mind couldn\'t seem to make up its mind as to which it was most comfortable with so it went over virtually every situation possible relating to him.
When David finally staggered in around one in the morning, drunk and giddy, and found Rae\'s sleeping body on the couch, it had a sobering effect on him. He went to her and carefully shook her awake, trying not to startle her again. She came to with a yawn and cat-like stretch which knocked her book onto the floor and made David smile.
\"Morning sweetie,\" he said to her. \"I\'m sorry I ran out on you like that, I just needed some time to myself.\"
\"Oh,\" she said, muffled by another yawn. \"It\'s okay, I mean, I can understand that.\" Rae smiled at him and confessed, \"I was really worried about you when you didn\'t come home earlier, I wasn\'t sure if you were lying dead somewhere on the road or...\"
\"Oh, sweetheart, I was going to call but I realized that it was about 11 and you were probably sleeping by then.\" He pulled her into a hug. \"I didn\'t want you to worry about me, I just needed some time to think things through a little bit.\" David kissed her on the cheek and that seemed to calm her down a little bit.
David started to pull back from Rae to excuse himself to his bedroom but she clung to him, not wanting him to go yet. He moved in again to kiss her on her cheek but Rae turned her face and the perfectly chaste kiss became passionate.
Rae kissed David with all of the fervor and passion that she had always known was inside her, turning her confusion into decisive action. David was surprised but had absolutely no objections to her actions. After all, this is what he had longed for for so long now.
Their lips played upon each others, hands cautiously stroking each other\'s backs. Rae\'s mouth opened to David\'s tongue and the kiss deepened, sending chills through both of them. Rae moved her hands to David\'s chest and he instinctively moved away from her, thinking that was what she intended, but she wrapped her arms around his neck once more and pulled him to her, urging him silently to continue.
Eagerly he resumed and brought his hands down to her waist, playing with the hem of her shirt. Realizing David\'s intent, Rae raised her arms obligingly and he brought the shirt up over her head. He looked at her a moment, searching her eyes for any sign of doubt in what they were doing and when he found none he pulled Rae to him, lifting her and walked her to the master bedroom. The only objection that Rae had was that he hadn\'t allowed her to walk... she was afraid of heights.
David laid her down on the bed and Rae watched him as he pulled off his shirt and kicked off his shoes and came to join her again on the bed. She put her arms around him and kissed him, willing him to touch her all over. He did, but hesitantly. He wanted her, but not like this, not with the smell of alcohol lingering on both of their breaths and clouding their judgment, and so it was he, not she, who said, \"Stop, no, we shouldn\'t do this.\"
