Chapter Four
Daniel couldnft stop tossing in bed that night. He tried to sleep, but Alex wouldnft escape his mind. He kept repeating the conversation over and over.
gI am gay!h
gI am sorry, but you know you are wrong, right?h
gI knew this was going to trigger that reaction out of you.h
gAm I right?h
gNo, you are not right. How is it not right to love unconditionally.h
gButch
The words kept playing like a broken record in his head. Finally with a yell of frustration, Daniel got out of bed and went into the kitchen to distract himself with food. He sat there on a stool, eating away in the dead of night. Yet he still canft stop himself from his drifting thoughts towards Alex. He glanced around the room to find anything to occupy his mind with, but his eyes laid rest on the telephone. Alexfs number and note was still in front of it, and it would be so easy to just dial those nine digits again. He stood in front of the phone while munching on some potato chips. Finally he picked it up and dialed the number, after swallowing the bulk of junk food residing in his mouth. It was a little bit after one ofclock in the morning, but he didnft care, he needed to apologize. Whether he was right or not, the words came out too harsh.
His conscience was devouring him, but there was also something else that made him feel uneasy. Alex made sense, destroying all he ever learned since he was five at Hebrew school. He canft let one man, let alone one comment, to alter everything he believed in. As ridiculous as it was, he never expected to be tangled with the life of a homosexual, and he was certainly surprised that the man acted so normal. He would have expected him to crossdress, or talk in a girlish sort of way. Alex wasc too normal. Then the question of normality arises. What is normal anyway? Itfs just a bunch of human set standards, and perhaps these standards are the crimes in some distant galaxy. The point being, Daniel is confused.
The phone kept ringing until someone picked it up with a groggy and irritable voice.
gWho the heck is this? Donft you need to sleep?h
gItfs me, Daniel.h
gEven better. I told you there is nothing for us to talk about.h
gI thinkcno, uhmc I know I need to talk to you. I wanted to apologize for my earlier comments.h
gDid you have to call so early in the morning? Some of us actually have work in the morning.h
gWell, I couldnft sleep, since I canft stop thinking about what happened earlier in the restaurant.h
gWhatever, I am going back to sleep, I suggest you rest a little too.h
gYeah, good night.h
gMm hmm.h
During the whole phone call Danielfs heart was pounding against his chest. He was afraid Alex was still angry, but it seemed like he mellowed down a bit. So he walked back to bed and fell asleep soon after, dreaming of what to say to Alex when they meet the next time. If there was to ever be a next time.

Daniel approached several of the rabbis at the school he taught at, to consult about homosexuality. All of them shunned the question, by answering that gItfs simply wrong.h They never really gave him a reason, so he decided to approach other sources, Christian sources that is. He read over several books and even went to see a pastor of a protestant church, and still the idea is foreign to him. Itfs true that God created man and woman, not man and man, but thatfs because he wanted to have variety, right? Yes, there were several passages in the Bible forbidding any sexual acts between the same gender, but not an explicit reason is ever given anywhere. Daniel kept reaching a dead end, and finally he gave up. He decided he needed to just talk to Alex and hear what he had to say.
gYeah, this is Alex. Donft leave message, since I never listen. You can, however, call back later. After the tone, please leave your message.h
gDamn,h Daniel cursed under his breath and hung up. Hefll try again later, meaning he call every five minutes. So, if the man is hiding at home, he will eventually have to pick up the phone, or when he gets home from whatever. He will get in touch immediately. After two hours of calling and waiting, finally someone picked up.
gHello, this is Alex.h
gAlex, itfs Daniel. I was wondering if we can talk.h
gStop that! I\'m ticklish. Uhm, sorry Daniel, got a little distracted there, whatfd you say?h
gI said, can we meet sometime to talk.h
gIt depends (giggles), what do you want to talk about? Who is it, Alex?h A foreign voice popped up into phone from the background.
gI just want to talk. I felt bad that we ended on a bad note, and would like to fix it.h
gI donft know, Dan. I donft even know if youfll want to look at me after that.h
gAlex, please, I just want to hear your sidech
gWhoever this is, stop taking away the precious little time Alex and I share, say what you got to say and hang up.h Daniel was interrupted when the person in the background grabbed the phone from Alex.
gDonft do that again. He is a good friend. Now go wait in the bedroom. Ifll be there in a sec. Sorry Daniel.h
gItfs alright. If you are busy, then I wonft bother you.h
gNo, letfs meet at the Starbucks, in the Barnes and Nobles, on Righter Street, say about 6:00 tomorrow night? That sound good?h
gYeah, yeah, Ifll be there. Thanks.h
Well, that went unexpectedly well, minus the disruptions of course. Talking about the disruption, it sounded like Alex was going toc Daniel blushed at the thought and pushed the picture away. He felt relieved in a way, that he is finally meeting with Alex again, but now he has to figure out what to say to the man.
