My Life Without You
“Crystal? Crystal,
are you okay?”
“Huh?”
“Are you okay? You
seem out of it.”
“I’m okay, Claire.
Just waiting for something.”
“What are you waiting for?”
“My life to end or another to begin.”
The bell rang.
Crystal got up and left, leaving a confused friend behind her.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> She began to walk home.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The walk was so lonely.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Cars passed her by as she walked on the
sidewalk. How she wished one would
swerve off the road and hit her.
“No. Kai wouldn’t
like that. I have to be there
when he wakes.” Thought Sapphire as
she ran to Kai’s apartment.
After Kai died, Sapphire had moved in to take care of his
body. The burns from the Council’s
spell were still healing, and his body was still warm.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> She’d been living in his apartment for about
a month, and everyday she ran home.
Half expecting he’d be up and making lunch.
She turned the key in the lock, and took a deep breath.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Slowly pushing the door open, Sapphire
peeked inside.
Nothing.
Everything was as she’d left it. The bird was sitting on the blades of the fan, waiting for her
arrival.
“Getting faster everyday.”
He commented.
“How is he?”
“Still dead.”
“I thought so. How
long do you think it’ll take?”
“I wasn’t sure yesterday, and I’m not sure today,” said the
bird as he watched Sapphire get a glass of water, “you should really give up on
Kai.”
Sapphire slammed the glass onto the table, “No!style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I won’t give up on him!style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I am in love with him!style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I won’t let him die, even though he
kinda already did. Anyway, no bunch of
ragtag fucking jackasses like the Council are going to take him away from me!”
The bird had a smile in his voice when he spoke, “Did you
know that since I am linked to Kai’s soul, he can hear and see everything I
do?”
“What do you mean?” Asked
Sapphire, trying to calm down a little.
“He’s dreaming about this.
He hears and sees everything I do.
If you talk to me, then he can see your face and hear your words.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Your words just now melted his heart.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He is grateful that you still feel strongly
about him.”
Sapphire got up and walked to Kai’s room.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> She looked at his still body.
“Kai... I’m sorry I look so terrible.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I love you.”
“He doesn’t care how you look. He loves you. He’ll begin
to breathe soon.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“So you can communicate his thoughts?”
“Depending on if he wants me to know what he’s thinking.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The reason it’s taking so long for him to
heal is because there’s something in his memory that won’t let him rest.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He’s working a complex spell right now.”
“Do you know what it is?”
“I can only see glimpses.
I’ve caught some words, but the one I hear most is something about a
cat.” Said the bird as he cocked his
head at Sapphire.
“Cat?! He remembers
that?!” Thought Sapphire, “Damn
you, Kai! Don’t worry about me!style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Worry about what I’m going to do to you if
you insist on working your magic like this!”
“Kai says that he won’t be able to heal completely until he
works this spell. Don’t leave him yet.”
“You dummy. I ain’t
leavin’ you for nobody.” Said
Sapphire in a southern accent.
“He says that’s good because he needs you to close your eyes
and repeat a word in your head.”
“What kind of word?”
“Whatever you want your cat’s name to be.”
“Okay.” Sapphire
said, closing her eyes and doing as she was told.
Suddenly, Sapphire felt something being ripped away.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It was as though she were missing a piece of
herself. Her eyes snapped open, and a
black cat sat in her lap.
“Kai says that he hopes you like this gift.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Not only is she a companion for the duration
he is gone, but she is also a cat that is not afraid of a wolf’s scent.”style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Explained the bird.
“Why do I feel as though there’s a hole in my chest?”style="mso-spacerun: yes"> She asked softly.
The bird went to her shoulder and raked his nails across her
flesh. Small droplets of blood began to
form. Sapphire was about to choke the
little bastard, but was stopped.
“Look.” He said.
Sapphire looked. The
wound was closing. She looked up at the
bird.
“What just happened?”
“If you were shot with a laser,” began the bird, “the flesh
would grow back.”
“Which means what?”
“That cat is linked to your soul just as I am to Kai.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> You’re an immortal now, too.”
