It seemed as though I had ended up in a quiet neighborhood this time and I smiled to myself. ‘Maybe I can spend more than I few weeks here.’ the cat suddenly dug it’s claws into my shoulder and I could feel the hiss building up in it’s throat. I turned and saw a dog across the road looking at me with a snarl on it’s face. I put my hand on the cat’s neck and petted her to calm down as I walked away from the source of her irritation. As I got far away, she let her claws retract and started purring. I smiled, glad she didn’t pierce skin and turned at a corner…
~~~~~~~
I found a quiet little park and sat in one of the swings while the cat, she looked a little like the color of wet earth so I decided to call her Terra, was on the floor playing with a stray piece of paper. I wrapped my arms around the metal links and watched her with amusement when the wind began tugging at the page and pulling it almost out of reach. She’d catch it and then randomly look up to me as if for my approval, at which I smiled.
The crunch of dirt underfoot caused me to turn out of sheer curiosity. A young girl, no older than nine, came up to me and Terra with curiosity. She looked at me and asked
“Is it yours?” I nodded once and her eyes lit up. “Can I pet her?” I shrugged and put my hand low to the floor calling her silently. She looked at my hand for maybe a second before pouncing on it, allowing me to lift her off the ground. The girl began gently running her hands across her fur with wonder in her eyes. “It’s so soft!”
“You want to hold her?” I asked, with almost no emotion in my voice.
“Can I?” I nodded and let her hold out her hands and placed Terra gently into the little cradle she formed. “Wow.” her shock had me chuckle a little when I heard a voice call out
“Anya! Where are you?”
“I’m over here.” the girl replied “That’s Terry. She’s my friend… do you want to meet her?”
“She’s coming here anyway.” I said shrugging as Anya’s face broke out into a wonderful smile.
“We can go meet her!” she said resting Terra down on the floor and taking one of my hands. “Come on!” I was shocked at her bold behavior, but I let it go and allowed her to pull me to her friend. “Hey Terry! This is…”she stopped and looked at me while I saw her green eyes regard me with caution. I looked back and saw Terra gone back to playing with the paper.
“What’s your name again?” Anya asked looking innocently cute
“I didn’t tell you my name, but it’s Kitsune.” I replied looking down at her. I saw Terry glare at her out of the corner of my eye and felt the earth shift slightly. I turned my head back to her and saw a faint glow in her eyes “You should keep your anger in check.” I said before slipping my hand out of Anya’s and going back to Terra. I heard a crack in the earth and felt something large heading towards me. I looked at the large boulder and stopped it in midair, making it land heavily on the ground before continuing my trek. “I don’t want trouble.”
“Yeah. But every time a new souseiki comes into the neighborhood, the organization follows soon after.” I nodded without smiling
“I’ll go then.”
“No, don’t go!” Anya cried grabbing my hand. “Terry tell her not to go!”
“It’s alright Anya. She can go where ever she pleases.” I knelt down and looked into her eyes carefully judging her earnestness
“Don’t be so trusting of strangers. You have no idea what I’ve done.” I said seriously as I slipped my hand out of hers. Terra was looking at us now, curiously. “Keep the cat.” I kissed the top of her head and disappeared from my spot in front of her, reappearing a few blocks away.
~~~~~~~
I avoided contact with everyone else in the neighborhood, for the next week that I was there. I felt torn. Something about the area had a hold over me, but I couldn’t figure out what. Eventually I made my way back to the park where I first met Anya and Terry and was slightly dismayed when I saw, not only them but three others. My dismay was short lived, however, when I saw the red orange hair whip in the wind.
