Meet the Cannon
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Adam’s POV)
I was having a very good dream. It was like I was floating on the water. The waves making me sway gently making me smile in bliss. Then the wave started to shake my shoulder a bit more insistently. So I opened my eyes reluctantly to see what it was about. The first thing I saw was an angel’s face looming close to mine with his hair falling between us and sheltering my face from the sun. The angel seemed to be saying something when I realized that it was actually the kid from before and that I have fallen asleep under the tree. I sat up groggily and heard him say “ Sorry to wake you up, but the bell is ringing and you didn’t seem to be waking up any time soon.”
“It’s alright. The weather was nice. And I have a free period now anyway.”
He looked contrite, and bitting down his lower lip, he blushed saying “ I’m terribly sorry, I didn’t know.”
I felt bad for him so I said quickly trying to reassure him “ Don’t worry about it. I can go right back to sleep.”
He hesitated for a second before saying “Ok, I have to go to class now.”Then he added with a small smile “ Try to wake up before your class though.”
“Yeah, I’ll set my cell’s timer to be sure” I said laughing.
“Ok, bye.”
“See you.”
I watched him walk away then laid back down against the tree. Willow, I thought with a smile. It was the first time I saw someone name a tree. Every thing the kid does leaves me more and more surprised and amused. First, his spacing out most of the time, then him not paying attention to his surroundings including the people around him. And now this, a peculiar friendship with a tree. I was feeling more and more intrigued and I wanted to know more about him. He looks so different from the people I have met so far. I’m sure I’ll never get bored in his company.
I sighed trying to go back to sleep, but I couldn’t. Something felt missing, and I realized it was the kid’s, Gabriel’s, absence. It wasn’t like we had an actual conversation when we shared ‘Willow’s’ shadow. Actually we hardly spoke. But it wasn’t an awkward silence. More like a peaceful one. I got so used to girls babbling about stupid nothings trying to get my attention, and to guys speaking loudly about parties and the games that I found his quiet refreshing.
I found myself humming distractedly as I kept watching the leaves swaying with the wind until it was time to get up and go to class. Before leaving I stared at the tree for a while before saying “Bye Willow. See you soon.” . I smiled as the I saw the leaves bouncing up a nd down like the they were returning my greeting. Well, maybe it’s not a crazy thing after all to name a tree.
All throughout the lesson, I let my mind drift to the upcoming game. The other team was pretty good but we trained hard and our team in one of the best high school teams. That was one of the reasons I wanted to enroll in this school. I wasn’t really worried. I like the game because I enjoy it not because of the score. Of course winning is great but I’d rather lose against a strong team after giving it my all than win a pitiful game against a weak team. But I didn’t see the need to voice my opinion since I’m pretty sure the guys won’t share my philosophy. The way I hear them talk about tonight’s game it would seem all hell would break loose were we to lose. Especially Chris Cannon, he was so adamant about winning, going over the game strategies with the coach over and over I’m sure everyone got them engraved in their memories time and again. And when I saw him today in the corridor he seemed so hyped up and excited it was funny to see.
When class was finally over, I headed to the bus waiting to take us to the stadium. Not everybody was there so I settled next to the bus waiting for everyone to reassemble before going. Thats’ when I saw Gabriel coming our way. He stopped behind Cannon and called to him softly trying to get his attention from whatever conversation he was having with four other guys. But Cannon didn’t seem to hear him. One of his friends noticed though and was obviously having fun watching the small boy calling again a bit louder to no avail. Finally he took pity on him and nudged Cannon saying “ Yo, Chris, Your brother is calling you.”
Brother? They didn’t look alike at all. Chris looked like a fish in the water among his friends while Gabriel was so uncomfortable he seems ready to bolt out of there anytime. He reminded be of a deer cornered by a hord of rhinoceros. And wouldn’t the guys like what I thought of them. I watched as Cannon turned around looking down at his brother who looked like a small kid among the team members who were more than twice his size.
“Gabriel? What are you doing here?”
“I got a call from mum. She tried to reach you but you didn’t answer.”
Cannon shrugged carelessly “My battery must be dead. What did she say?”
“Dad’s meeting will take longer than he expected, so they will be running a bit late. They will be at the stadium after the game begins.”
“Oh,” Cannon said seeming a bit disappointed , ”Well, I guess it can’t be helped, as long as they come to watch. Is that all?”
“Yeah” Gabriel said softly than added”Good luck”
But his brother didn’t hear him, he already turned around , talking to his friends.
I watched as Gabriel walked away, feeling curious about the odd interaction between the two. I don’t have siblings, so I don’t know what that’s like, but aren’t brothers supposed to be closer? I was pulled out of my musing by hearing one of the guys,Summons was his name, say “You’re lucky Chris. Your parents always come to watch your games.”
“Yeah well, dad always says that he wants to see me play so we can discuss the game later and mum wants to make sure I don’t get hurt, she thinks the game is dangerous.” he said with no small amount of pride in his voice at the obvious affection of his parents.
“But I’ve never seen your brother at one of the games.”, another guy, Parker, said.
“Well, Gabriel isn’t the kind of guy interested in football” he shrugged nonchalantly.
“Well, even if he did come, no one would notice. He looks like a little mouse.”,Parker said laughing.
“Yeah, maybe”,Chris said joining in the laughter.
I sat there thinking about the way they talked about Gabriel, and I found myself upset with the way talked about it. True, first when I met him he reminded me of a little mouse but in a cute way, not the dismissive way they were talking about. If I had a younger brother like him I sure as hell wouldn’t let my friends joke about him like that. I found my esteem for Cannon dropping a few notches.
As the bus started moving, I tuned out the excited chatter and found myself thinking about the small brunette and how he looked so fragile and alone walking away from the bus and his brother.
