Jerk-off
(present)
Penny shook her head, fingers running through her curly brown hair as she leaned back against the headrest of her cherry red mustang. She knew the car wasn’t exactly inconspicuous, which was the whole point when one was sent into protective custody, but honestly, it wasn’t if he wouldn’t find her again and she’d be damned if she lost another vintage car because of him. She turned up the volume on the radio and sighed as the hot slide of sweat ran along her hairline and down the side of her face and onto her neck.
She didn’t bother with the air conditioner. Not because it didn’t work, but because she liked the heat. Liked the cruel expulsion of strength and spirit. It was new. It was…different. Where she’d come from last had been cold. Had been windy. She grown sick and tired of the chill that was constantly in her bones. So yes…the heat was nice.
“This is your host Brenda Summers and I’d like to welcome you all back to W.E.V.N. Today we’ve been talking about bad boys. What really defines a ‘bad boy’ and are they worth the danger. Gloria you’re on the air.”
“Yeah…um like first of all, Hi Brenda. I’ve been a fan for like ever and I just love your show.”
“Thank you dear.”
“No prob Ms. Summers. Now I heard what the last guy said, about how a woman never really wants a bad man she just thinks she does. And how he said women never know what they want unless they have a strong-minded man around to explain things to them.”
“And what did you think of that Gloria?”
“I think somebody spent a lot of time whacking off in the bathroom during high school that’s what I think.”
Brenda laughed, and as she lay her head against the glass of her driver’s side window, Penny fought off a smile.
“I mean, this bastard obviously doesn’t understand shit about women. Personally, I know I can’t handle a true blue bad boy but lets face it, they’re the hottest ones. As a woman I know that I like the thought of a man whose stronger than me, who can tame me if necessary. That’s where the danger thing comes in. I don’t want some jerk off who smashes my face in if he boss pisses him off that day at work. Now if he wanted to tie me up and fu--”
“Whoa Gloria. Stop right there honey. We're still on the air and though I would like to hear the end to that particular thought, my boss would kill me and the censors would have a feild day.”
Penny laughed outright at that. During her daytime shows it had sometimes been a bitch to edit her more grittier callers but she had the much coveted privilege of not having such restrictions on her show at night.
The sense of loss that swamped her then was heavy.
She had loved her show, had been proud of it. Bleeding Heart had been her baby even before Sarah and now he had taken both of them from her.
Suddenly restless Penny leaned forward in her seat and with an almost violent flick of her wrist turned off the radio in the middle of some middle aged woman’s tearful confession about her marriage.
Leaning her head against the leather of the steering wheel, Penny took a deep breath and tried not to hyperventilate.
She fought herself, honest she did but darkness dragged at her and the force of memory screamed through her head like a freight train. She hadn't thought she'd be able to remember it all so well. But then nightmares had a way of sticking with you.
Her breath catching on a pained cry, she slumped forward and went still.
