chapter 4
Brian had been standing at the end of the handicapped ramp when she ran right by him. He caught her, almost went deaf when she screamed, and pulled her halfway down the handicapped ramp. He had to almost drag her; she wouldn’t stop struggling. He stopped and gave her a quick shake, she stopped struggling and noticed it was Brian that grabbed her and not Nick like she’d thought.
“Whats going on?” he asked glancing around, happy to see they were alone.
“Uh…” she rambled, she couldn’t let him know. “I was stupid.” she said and shook out of his grip. She gave a quick look for Nick, not spotting him anywhere. “I’m gonna smoke a cigarette.” Josie said and turned and walked away.
Josie went back up the handicapped ramp and walked up the hill to the smoking area. She sat down on one of the benches and lit a cigarette. Brian sat down next to her. Josie hadn’t even noticed him following her. She guessed he knew she didn’t want to talk since for the first time since meeting him, he kept his mouth closed.
“You look a little shook up. Something scary happen at the old dorm?” someone asked. She hadn’t realized it had only been 15 or so minutes since she left.
“No.” she said, thinking yes.
“You went to the old dorm?” Brian asked, smirking.
“Its not what you think.” she said, knowing he was thinking about how he caught her running like a scared little girl, in the opposite direction of the old dorms.
“Why’d you go?”
“Because I couldn’t not go.”
“That’s bullshit. No one forced you.”
“Not in the physical sense.” no, she thought, that had come later.
“Seriously, why’d you go?”
“Well, I said no, that I wasn’t really interested in wasting time looking for ‘balls of light’ and that I really couldn’t care less about ghosts or demons or whatever else goes bump in the night. But here is the catch, I looked like a pussy, because not caring automatically means ‘scared’ and so I had to go.”
“So what did you see?”
“Well on the way there it was mostly trees. A few bushes, some shrubbery. Then, we reached a clearing that I imagine was grass beneath all the dead leaves. The building is red as you can see, well, not now but tomorrow during daylight, bunch of windows, couple doors, looked in a window saw a bunch of shit scattered all over the room, no ghosts, no lights, no nothing. Saw more trees, bushes, and shrubs on the way out and here I am.” Josie said.
“I see.” Brian said, surprised at her tone. “You’re done with your cigarette, lets go.” he said, grabbing her arm.
“Can you please let me go?”
“No. We’re going for a walk.”
“Do you have to drag me?”
“I don’t know. If I let you go are you going to continue walking with me?”
“I guess, just stop pulling my arm.” he let her arm go. “So whats with the walk?”
“Had a couple questions. I thought you might be more comfortable answering if you didn’t have an audience.” he was leading her around the back of the new dorms.
“What kind of questions?”
“If you didn’t see anything at the old dorms, what were you running from?”
“What was I running from?” she repeated incredulously, trying to think of an answer. “Running, I’ll have you know, is much faster than walking. And, AND its part of my, uh, new exercise… routine.” she created. “20 pounds.” she added.
“Riiight. You said we. Who were you with?”
“I said we?”
“Yes. Who were you with?”
“I’m not answering that question.”
“I guess you don’t have to. Doesn’t matter, I can just ask around the smoking area.”
“You wouldn’t.” Josie asked, more than stated.
“Wanna bet?”
“Why do you even care?”
“I don’t.”
“So you’ll leave it alone?”
“No. Who were you with?
“Nick. I went with Nick, okay?” he visibly stiffened.
“Oh.” Brian went silent for a moment. “I take it from the way you were running you learned you lesson.” he said with a smile.
“You don’t have to look so fucking smug about it. And what lesson are you talking about?”
“I told you to stay away from Nick.”
“I was trying to, I mean, I didn’t even want to go. I left him in the rec and I went to smoke a butt and then I was going to my room but he followed me outside and started talking about the old dorms.”
“You left him in the rec? You were in the rec with Nick? You’re an idiot.”
“Oh please don’t hold back.” she said sarcastically.
“I’m just saying, you’d have to be to go to the rec with him.”
“Ask your room mate.“ she mumbled.
“What was that?” he asked, stopping at the ramp to the girls dorm.
“Nothing. I’m going now.” she said, waking across the ramp to the girls’ entrance. Josie went to her room, and took a hot shower. Jackie was MIA and Josie was thankful for that. She needed some alone time. After her shower she put on her pajamas and went to bed.
