You I See

Eye Of The Beholder

You I See:

Lilly moved back. It wasn’t anything other then shock. Nero had already begun turning away from her again. He shouldn’t have let her see. It wasn’t fair on her to burdened with this. How could she now see him as anything but a monster now?

‘I told you didn’t I? I warned you that no good would come from you seeing me. I’m sorry if I offended you.’

‘No I’m so sorry it just took me by surprise is all.’

‘You have no need to explain. My mother told me that if anyone was to see me that I would be hunted down. That as I was not normal I would be feared and rejected.’

‘How could a mother say such a thing?’

Lilly reached for him and pulled him round. Nero put up some token resistance but soon faced her again. He knew what she was seeing. What his mother had seen when she had seen him last. Lilly was seeing it now and the look in her eyes told him that she felt the same emotion his mother had ended up feeling for him. Not the love a mother should give but pity. Pity for what he had become.

Lilly reached her hand to his face. He backed away from her touch so she dropped her hand simply following the lines with her eyes. From one eye down his cheek this man had a scar. At closer inspection she could see it was a burn, a long ago healed burn. It covered half of one cheek and reached down onto his neck to the edge of his shirt. His hair was thinner at the neck and she could see it continued round the entire back. On the other side of his face was small patches of burns also this though looked more like drops. Lilly took in each one in turn.

‘What happened to you?’

‘You really want to know?’

‘Yes!’

‘When I was ten years old I was playing in the kitchen of our family house waiting for my mother to return from a shopping trip. The house keeper my mother employed was boiling water for my mothers afternoon tea. I wanted to be helpful as mother had shouted at me earlier that day after making a mess. I reached for the kettle but it slipped as I had wet hands and the water ran over my face causing the burns you see. The house keeper took me to hospital after placing a damp cloth over my eyes and face. There my mother was told that the burns were serious and would leave scarring. That which you can see was substantial and so I was disfigured for life and incapable of integrating with human life.’

‘What do you mean unable to integrate with human life? Many people have scars. Many people live with burns all over there body. Why did you not?’

‘My mother had high standards. She said that I was no longer her son. I couldn’t be when I was so unpleasing to the eye. I was a mistake and that I was never to bring her shame by being seen. From that moment on I lived in the house and was not able to be outside when anyone may see me. I was home schooled of course. To the world I did not exist anymore. When my mother died my uncle brought me here he said I was safer here as he would have to sell the house and couldn’t look after me. At first he brought me things and made sure I was alright on a regular basis then he stopped coming. I knew he couldn’t look at me anymore.’

Lilly wiped the tear from her cheek. Looking up into those lost eyes she could see the boy he must have been simply wanting to be care for and having it all thrown in his face. His mother had done him wrong. Moving over to the chair Nero sat with his head in his hands. She would only ever pity him. He was a monster he knew it.

Lilly reached for his head tilting it upwards, removing his hands. Long fingers traced the scaring. She ran her thumb over each one now knowing how each had come to be. Looking into his eyes she could see the tears he held in check. Even with the scars he was a handsome man. A long elegant nose, the palest blue eyes she had seen his lips had been untouched by the burning liquid and stood proud on his face. His hair as raven as hers, long though and curling at the collar of his shirt. It was obvious to her that he had cut it himself as the ends where uneven and leading to a point in the middle.

‘I don’t pity you I’m applauded that you have been put through so much and that you have been lied to by people that should have loved you so much. It sickens me to think that you have had to go through so much on your own from such a young age. You should not feel that you have to hide from humanity. You may be different but who wants to be like everyone else.’

Cupping his cheek she leaned forward and kissed each scar in turn bending his head to reach the expanse curling round his neck. Looking back in his eyes Lilly could see the confusion there. It had been so long since someone had shown him anything like compassion.

‘You still haven’t told me your name!’

‘My name is Nero Stanford.’

‘I know that name!’
