Rethinking Impressions
~Chapter 3~
She hadn’t seen him once since he left the girl locker room that morning. Yet, all she could think about was that smile of his and everything else about him. She couldn’t tell but it had kept her smiling all day long. Why was he having such an effect on her? His hair was so beautiful, and his smile was perfection. Imogene would melt into a pile of a blithering teenage girl if she encountered that smile once more that day, so she had been lucky he didn’t have any classes with her.
‘Ben… Ben Skeptor. ’ It had such a nice ring to it; not to mention the owner of it was a major hottie. Why could this one guy corrupt her normally semi-focused thoughts?
“Imogene… you there sweetie?” Chloe snapped Imogene out of her daze.
“Oh yeah, sorry. I was thinking about that project.” Imogene quickly tried to cover her tracks. Although she loved Chloe and Trinity she didn’t want them thinking she was lusting after a guy.
“Project? What project?” Of all the days Chloe didn’t start with a story featuring her as the star she had to be actually listening to Imogene’s lie.
“Umm, my AP history class. A big boring project, umm, about the war.” Imogene knew that it was a big fat lie, but she was hoping Chloe would soon start talking about herself rather than asking about Imogene.
“Oh, well anyways Paul was starring at me again today in English. God! I mean can’t he just get a life or something?!” Imogene nodded and finished gathering her things from her locker. Her mind slowly wondered towards whether or not Neil was joking about leaving her at school if she was late. She figured he wouldn’t risk getting the third degree by the folks, so she decided she was safe to idol for a few minutes with Chloe. “OH! I almost forgot to tell you, that new kid has geometry with me first period. And… he asked me about you!”
That certainly grabbed Imogene’s attention faster than she thought imaginable. Halting her in the footsteps and causing Chloe to do the same.
“What?!”
“He asked me about you silly!” Chloe laughed and as usual about twelve guys turned around. It was like her calling card or something.
“What did he ask you exactly?”
“He just wanted to know what your name was, that’s all. Anyways, cheer practice awaits me; along with the basketball team! Call me!” Chloe danced down the hallway towards the gym, leaving Imogene standing in the middle of the hall confused.
“First period…?” Imogene thought back to what Chloe had said. Ben asked Chloe her name during first period, and he walked into the girls’ locker room right before second. He already knew her name. What kind of game was this kid playing?
Imogene walked outside to find Neil waiting impatiently in his car. Walking towards the car she heard him unlock it, signaling that it was his car and he was doing her yet another favor. Once she sat down and closed the door Neil locked the doors again and sped away faster than Imogene thought legally possible.
Silence echoed through-out the car most of the way back to their house, until Neil spoke up.
“I was worried about you. I don’t trust that new kid.” Imogene could tell that Neil was honestly worried about her.
‘With good reason too.’ She thought to herself.
“I’m sorry I was an ass to you, I am. I just worry about you.” Neil looked over at Imogene and gave her a soft smile, almost proving to her than he did in fact care.
“I know. Thank you Neil.” Imogene returned the same gentle smile and watched as Neil began to face the road.
The rest of the drive was spent in complete silence, yet this time it was comfortable.
