Chapter 4

He offered his arm to Penny, and she took it lightly. The walk to the field was long and quiet, but yet the silence was comfortable. She tripped and skidded in the mud of the field, but Galen managed to keep her upright.

“Thank you,” she panted, straightening herself up. “I seem to be having balance issues today.” She laughed softly and looked around the empty field. How was she ever going to find her ring? “I lost my ring somewhere out here and I need to find it. Would you like to help me?”

He nodded eagerly and bound off to the opposite end of the grassland before kneeling down and searching the ground closely for any glints of gold. She herself crouched down in a similar position and began her search.

It seemed like she’d been searching for hours before a sudden rapping on her shoulder caused her to tumble over in surprise. Galen hovered over her with a worried look on his face. When she assured him she was fine, his expression turned to a look of happiness. He produced a golden ring from his palm and handed it to her.

“This is my ring! Oh, thank you!” Penny hugged him fiercely, joy flooding her. “I can go home now!”

Galen pulled away abruptly, frowning. He shook his head angrily, eyes bright with hurt.

“I’m sorry, but I have to go. My family will miss me,” Penny apologized. “I don’t belong here.”

He bowed his head, shoulders slumped.

She hugged him again. “You’re very sweet, and I’m sorry that I have to go. I’m very grateful for all that you and Madame LeCroix have done for me. But I can’t stay; I have to go home.” She turned to leave, the ring held tightly in her hand.

“Goodbye, Caterina” he whispered hoarsely, his voice sounding dry and unused.

Startled, she turned back around to find him staring at an invisible point above her shoulder.

She didn’t know what to say to him, but she did the best she could. “Goodbye, Galen.”

She smiled sadly before slipping the ring onto her thumb. There was a soft click as she pressed onto it and then everything was black.

Penny woke to find herself in her own home and her own bed. She bolted straight up, staring around in confusion. She looked for the ring but it was nowhere to be found. It couldn’t have been a dream. It was too real. There was only one way to find out.

She rushed to her laptop, impatiently drumming her fingers as it booted up. Once on the Internet she searched for any historical references to any Madame LeCroix in Paris. One match. Penny’s breath hitched in her throat as she read the excerpt.

Arabella LeCroix... widow of Thomas LeCroix... burned at the stake for witchcraft in 1427... succeeded by only daughter, Caterina LeCroix, married to Galen Von Swartzchild... FAMILY TREECLICK HERE...

Her eyes scrolled down the family tree in apprehension, feeling that she already knew what was coming. It had seemed strange to her that she would look so much like the LeCroix heiress, but she couldn’t place why. She finally reached the last three names of the tree: Rameiro Sanchez... Barbara Solomon... daughter Penelope Katherine Sanchez.

The chair hit the wall and there was a loud thud as she hit the ground. Penelope Sanchez had fainted for the fourth time in one day.
