Saphyre strode confidently through the halls of EDI, her jeans had been replaced by dress pants and nice blouses as her income had increased to the point she could afford office wear. She was looking for someone named Phoenix, or his office at least; since it seemed he was never in.
Ember had requested some files that had been in another partner’s office, as of yet she had not met the mysterious Phoenix, but she’d heard plenty. Mainly that he didn’t like filling out the proper paperwork on his cases, and when she’d gone into his office there were no pictures of family or anything else to give her a clue to what he was like.
It wasn’t completely lost on her that it seemed most of the people here had names that had something to do with fire in some form or another. Although she was blonde and had her dippy moments, she was also reasonably intelligent, but to her mind… it was simply strange coincidence; and she had no reason to believe otherwise.
She found the files right where Ember had said they’d be, and now she was headed back to her office to deliver them, when she passed Mary.
“What are you doing up here Mary?” Phyre asked in surprise; it was unusual for the receptionist to be seen away from her desk. In fact, Saphyre often joked that Mary secretly lived there, hidden in some compartment inside her desk.
“Oh hey Phyre, I’m just running some errands for Jessica.” Mary answered smiling; then continued on her way as she called over her shoulder. “Sorry I can’t talk, but I’ll see ya when you leave!”
“Oh! Okay…” Saphyre was no longer freaked out by her; in fact they’d almost become friends along with a lot of the other office workers. Her favorite person in the office however was Ember. They’d become quite close in the last few months she had been working there, and now, it seemed like they had been friends for years. They were a lot alike in so many ways, the same sense of humor, (warped!), it was almost eerie.
Something weird is going on here today! Saphyre thought. She knew it, could feel it like a storm cloud about to break. She was still shaking her head trying to figure it out when she entered Ember’s office and found her on the phone. Saphyre was about to leave the files on the desk and give Ember some privacy when Ember’s words made her stop.
"Listen to me,” Ember argued. “She’s not ready for that yet and I WILL NOT let you destroy the progress that we've made!” She paused listening. “I don’t know; a few more months?”
Are they talking about me? Saphyre couldn’t help but wonder.
“I don’t give a flying rat’s ass; about what you THINK.” Ember exclaimed angrily.
Saphyre’s eyes widened in surprise, there was venom in Ember’s voice than she’d never heard before. Her back was to Saphyre so she still hadn’t seen her yet; Saphyre knew she should leave but if they were discussing her, she wanted to know.
“You damn well know what is at stake here!” Ember growled into the phone then fell silent listening to the other end. “I've already given you my answer… DO NOT PUSH ME ON THIS!” She warned waving a sheaf of papers around in agitation.
At that point the person on the other end of the phone barked something so loudly that even Saphyre could hear the muffled words from where she stood! Whatever they’d said had not made Ember a very happy camper. Maybe it was just the lighting or something but as Ember finally turned towards her to slam the phone onto the receiver Phyre could have sworn that Ember's eyes had flashed red.
About the time Ember noticed her, the papers in her hand had started to smolder and smoke. Saphyre stood transfixed staring at the papers. It was as if they were about to catch fire!
Ember followed Saphyre’s eyes to the papers and noticed the smoke. Oh shit! She thought. That’s great; all that for nothing! It had seemed that her conversation on the phone had just been rendered pointless; because Phyre stood there staring at the smoking papers with her mouth held open and a look of utter confusion clearly written all over her face.
“What the hell is going on?” Saphyre whispered; tucking the files under her chin and hugging herself.
“Saphyre! I… I…” Ember for once was at a loss for words. “I didn’t mean for you to find out like this.”
“Like this?” Saphyre asked harshly, she narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “Did you know about me when you hired me?”
On a winter day when she was about to turn ten years old; she’d gotten lost and spent the night lost and alone. A snow burdened twig had snapped under its own weight; she’d screamed and thrown out her hands convinced a monster was about to eat her! To her absolute surprise a fireball flew from her fingertips and hit some nearby pine straw which immediately caught fire. She experimented all night until she fell asleep exhausted but with the knowledge that she could do it again if she tried hard enough.
“Yes…” Ember sighed. “I did…” It was time to come completely open with the girl. “In fact it is precisely why I hired you; do you want to know more?”
"Oh god!" Saphyre groaned.
