Chapter 4

AN: This one is short, I know, but it's all I could come up with for this "chapter."

The Sea Noose

When I awoke, it was to a cold and empty house. I hadn't thought about the fire yesterday and didn't put any wood in last night before I went to sleep. I rolled onto my side and reached on the bed, grabbing the pair of slippers and put them on. I slowly slid out of bed, not wanted to leave the warmth it offered me. I nearly ran into the living room, throwing two logs into the fireplace, along with some small scraps of wood that would burn quickly and help get the two logs burning. I grabbed a packet of matche and lit one, quickly nudging it underneath some of the scraps.

The match burned quickly, the scraps following moments later. One of the logs ignited and began to burn, the fire started crackling softly. I sat down in front of the now burning wood and rubbed my hands together, hoping for the warmth to spread quickly. I didn't have to wait long. Some minutes later, the living room was warm and toasty, the rest of the house slowly following in temperature.

I scooted back against the couch and watched the flames for a few moments. The way the flames danced and licked at the second log intrigued me. It looked as if the fire was teasing the log with it's heat, not burning it just yet, though just taunting it. The log wracked softly, a small piece of bark falling to the ground. The flames couldn't resist now. They licked mercilessly at the log, started to burn it now along with the other one it was currently torturing.

I sighed and stood up, giving up on trying to understand how the flames thought, if they even did at all. I walked into the kitchen and filled the tea kettle with fresh water and placed it on the stove, turning the burner on. I sat on the table, pushed to the side of the room and waited for the water to start boiling so I could make myself some tea.

When the kettle whistled I grabbed a mug and poured the hot water into it. I looked through the small tea chest, a simple box that sat on the counter, holding many different flavors of tea and cider. I picked out a strong apple cider and a light lemon tea bag. I dropped them both in the water and grabbed a spoon from the drawer. I slowly stirred the water and tea bags around as I made my way back into the living room.

I sat on the couch, tucking a leg underneath me and sipped my tea slowly. The cross between the lemon and the cider really did make a wonderful taste. I set my mug on the table and watched the flames once more. The second log had a good portion of it burnt on the top, the flames working their way inwards. The woods burnt spots glowed red, seeming to glow in a soft pattern. Becoming brighter then softer over and over in either pain or pleasure, it wasn't clear which. My thoughts wandered as I watched the flames, old memories creeping up to the fore front of my mind.
