Chapter 3. Sanctuary
Calypso was running again, faster and faster, her heart pounding against her chest as she glanced back at her relentless pursuers. An insignia comprised of a black dagger adorned the demon warriors’ armor, proudly bearing the mark of the one who sent them. Acting as one, they slowed down, as if they knew something that she did not. Confidently drawing their swords and unfurling their powerful wings, they surrounded her, cutting off all means of escape from three sides. She panicked and skidded to a sudden halt, narrowly missing the edge of the cliff’s ledge that she had not seen until now. Small stones were propelled into the dark void and fell silently to embrace their fate.
Calypso desperately tried to spread her broken wings, but she knew that they would not carry her weight. Nevertheless, she had to try to escape the demons somehow. She knew that she would not survive if they returned her to their master. One spread his formidable black wings to the night sky, his piercing grey eyes narrowing as he walked toward her.
In a decisive moment, the angel turned around and jumped off the cliff, crying out as the harsh, cold wind came up to meet her and she plummeted closer to the jagged rocks far below. She closed her eyes, determined to accept her fate and knowing that the only power she held over the demons was in choosing how she would die. She would not give them the satisfaction of taking that from her. How ironic that her last free choice was to be her final one.
Suddenly, she heard the beating of powerful wings, and a pair of strong arms surrounded her. She found herself being lifted higher and higher into the night sky, pressed against a warm, muscular body. She struggled in its masculine grasp, determined to break away from those who were so desperate to pursue her that they would follow even here, where they might be pulled downward into the void by the strong winds as well.
“Calypso,” a deep, familiar voice whispered in her ear as he held her tighter. “Don’t struggle. It’s okay; I’ve got you now.”
The angel’s eyes flew open, and the illusion of the dream was shattered as she recognized her surroundings. A dying fire crackled nearby, dispelling the wisps of the misty air that enshrouded the clearing. Drops of dew sparkled upon the grass of the meadow as pale ribbons of pink, yellow, and orange streaked the sky, heralding dawn’s approach. Trembling and shaken, she looked up to meet a pair of deeply intense green eyes, the handsome features framed by a fall of raven hair. “Dante,” Calypso whispered, almost disbelievingly.
“Shh,” he soothed. “It’s okay. You’re safe now.” Dante emanated a calm reassurance as he continued to hold her to him protectively. One hand came up to brush her long honey hair back, his fingers threading through it reverently.
Calypso’s arms came up to hold him to her, focusing on the steady beat of his heart within his powerful frame. “These dreams will never stop plaguing me until he is defeated. I’ll never escape them, no matter where I am,” she said sadly. The angel lowered her lashes, covering her eyes, seeking comfort in his touch. She just wanted to forget all of the horrible things that had happened in her past, but the fears and memories haunted her even now. A single crystalline tear trickled down her cheek, leaving a glistening trail on her porcelain flesh.
Dante brushed the tear away with his thumb, framing her face with his hands. “I vowed to protect you, and I fully intend to do so,” he whispered with conviction. The demon shifted their bodies so that she lay on her back. He leaned down over her, spreading his majestic wings. Compassion was present in his eyes, and he longed to ease her suffering the best way that he knew how, now that she was under his protection. Mere words did not seem to be enough to reassure the beautiful angel that he would rather die than break a vow. He leaned down decisively and kissed her.
The soft caress of his lips as they descended upon hers caused Calypso to gasp softly. The sensation that the warm contact created hinted of an intense, fiery passion simmering just beneath the surface. Her aquamarine eyes flew open in surprise, meeting heavy-lidded emeralds smoldering with desire.
“Forgive me,” Dante murmured, closing his eyes and lowering his mouth to hers again. His tongue sensually traced the pliant contours of her lips, his whole body igniting with a burning fire as she willingly opened her mouth against his.
His tongue delved hungrily into the velvet heat. The kiss was powerful and deep. She tasted heavenly, and he savored each caress of his tongue against hers. He built a gentle rhythm, kindling a fiery need that smoldered within her, leaving her breathless and desperately longing for more as he broke the kiss.
Her eyes looked up at him, all traces of fear now gone, replaced by a timid fascination. She reached up, lacing her fingers in his silky black hair, and pulled his mouth down to hers again. She needed to forget, needed to be lost in something other than confusion and fear, needed to replace the hate in her heart with some kind of love that would show her that she was capable of healing not only in body but in spirit as well. And she wanted it to be with Dante, demon though he was. She would no longer deny her attraction to the noble warrior any more.
He needed no further invitation. Dante captured her lips between his own, the kiss impassioned and heated. The powerful frame of his body molded against hers as she shifted beneath him, the significant evidence of his desire pressing against her. His whole being emanated a desperate need to claim her, to drive her to the brink of pleasure as he made her writhe underneath him. He lifted himself slightly and moved down her body to press open-mouthed kisses against the soft skin of her throat, his tongue hungrily tracing her pulse point and reveling in the fact that she burned for him as well.
Calypso moaned softly at the pleasure coursing throughout her body. She tilted her head back to give him better access, her body clenching in time to each stroke of his velvet tongue upon her sensitized skin. She trembled in anticipation, her body moving sensuously beneath him, her lips aching and swollen, branded from his kisses. She did not have the power to resist him, even if she had wanted to.
Her hands moved down his back, feeling the strong muscles flexing beneath her touch. He was solid and real, and the heat of his body was reassuring. The angel continued to hold her dark protector, loving the inherent masculinity found in the planes and angles of his body, radiating an aura of confidence and power. She encountered the sensitive nerve endings at the base of his wings, and his whole body shuddered in ecstasy, the sweet euphoria coursing throughout his veins and heightening the sensation from her caress.
Dante growled softly as he took possession of her lips once again. He couldn’t get enough of the angel who was kissing him so fervently, her loss of inhibition intoxicating as he reveled in the feeling of her hands exploring his body. The blood coursing through his veins roared with heated fire. His whole body began to glow with a red aura. It surrounded him, radiating a powerful heat as it intensified.
Calypso felt his skin against hers, growing steadily hotter and hotter, as he continued to kiss her. It felt as if her skin was igniting on fire, her whole body seeming to melt against his, becoming soft and compliant in his arms as she found it difficult to breathe. It was like nothing that she had ever felt before, and she was frightened. Her eyes flew open, and she broke the kiss with a gasp of surprise. Dante’s body was surrounded by the same mysterious powerful red aura that she had seen in the clearing before when he had defended her from the other demons. She trembled slightly, her expressive eyes betraying her uncertainty as her hands loosened around his broad back and came to rest at her sides.
Dante opened his deep emerald eyes and looked down at the beautiful angel with questioning concern. “What’s wrong?” he asked, his breathing ragged and his features flushed. Stray wisps of his raven hair fell across his forehead, making him seem all the more alluring.
“I-I don’t understand,” Calypso murmured, placing one hand over her rising and falling chest. She did not know how to explain the phenomenon that was happening between them. Even now, the heat radiated between them where their bodies still touched. “Your body, it…”
Dante responded with a gentle smile. “No need to explain, fair angel. I did not mean to overwhelm you. Besides, it is not safe here for us. We must hasten to a place of sanctuary before the demon lord sends his followers after you.”
“No, that’s not it…” Calypso trailed off as the demon got to his feet. But, it was too late. He hadn’t heard her. Frowning slightly, she stood slowly and took the hand that he offered to her. The aura was gone now, although his kind smile remained. She vowed to ask him about it later.
Dante flexed his powerful wings and wrapped his arm around her waist comfortingly. “Hold on,” he warned, before lifting her up effortlessly and holding her in his arms.
“Where are we going?” Calypso asked. She tried to suppress a smile at how right it felt at being pressed against the warrior’s muscular body as she shifted in his arms to get more comfortable.
“To see a dear friend,” he replied, his green eyes giving no indication of anything more, although they had a faraway, reminiscent look about them. He lifted them off the ground, gracefully ascending into the night sky. “You need a proper place to rest, food, and clothing, and your wounds need to be taken care of by someone who is more skilled in the arts of healing than I am. All of these things can be found within her sanctuary. Powerful magic protects her castle, and no one can pass the gates unbidden. You will be safe there.”
“I will be safe because I am with you,” the angel replied, resting her head against his chest and closing her eyes contentedly.
Dante did not reply. How could he tell her that she would never be truly safe until he hunted down Noir, confronted him in battle, and came out victorious? He did not want to promise her something that even he was uncertain of. However, she would be safe at the castle for now. She just didn’t need to know that he would be departing to seek out Noir shortly after she was settled.

“Wake up, fair angel,” Dante whispered. Calypso’s eyelids fluttered open as she was set upon her feet. Her turquoise eyes opened wide at the sight before her. A magnificent castle of black marble greeted them in all its dark splendor. It stood foreboding and silent, the pale moonlight reflecting off the polished surface of the many turrets and winding staircases leading up to the various floors and towers. A drawbridge was lowering across a moat, and Dante beckoned her to follow him as he began to walk across it. Calypso followed hesitantly, nervously taking a strand of her honey hair between her fingers. She knew that she was in the realm of Hades now. Her bleak surroundings signified that enough. She was back in the realm of the demons.
