Incest is on the way so those who hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil, best leave this evil!)I would also like to extend this by saying that I do not own any refrences to television shows or music pop stars mentioned in this chapter. I own nothing of the merchendice of either...the closest i get to owning is watching it and that's pretty far from it so...yeah.

Chapter Four

Kara let out a giant sigh as she placed her last shirt in her new closet. She glanced around the room in approval before gathering her bathroom things and going down the hall. She paused a moment outside her door and listened to the sounds of the television in the living room, picturing her big brother sitting on the couch in his boxers like a lazy bum. She shook her head, why did she just picture him in his boxers? She passed it off for stress; she really hadn’t planned on doing this when she went to bed last night. It’s funny how things work out. She entered the bathroom and found it to be just like the rest of the apartment, dirty. She made a mental note to clean it the first chance she got as she put away her toothbrush and hairbrush and several other feminine necessities. She opened the medicine cabinet to find a large box of condoms sitting on the lowest shelf. She sighed and took them out, putting them behind her back as she walked down the hall towards where Daniel sat on the couch.

“Hey Danny.”

He looked at her as a mischievous grin grew on her face.

“Could you keep these in your room from now on?”

She tossed him the box and he caught it in reflex, not really realizing what they were until he had caught them. She watched, as his face grew red and moved to his ears too. Kara couldn’t help but giggle. He stood and walked down the hall towards his door on the right and mumbled as he passed her.

“I REALLY wish you wouldn’t have found those.”

She laughed and turned to watch him exit.

“You left them there not me.”

She missed that, all the playing and joking they used to do as kids, she had missed that so much and now it was finally back in her life. She sat cross-legged on the couch just as Daniel came back down the hall; his right hand was scratching the back of his neck as he tried to overcome his embarrassment.

“Are you hungry?”

He walked into the kitchen before she could answer him, obviously trying to regain himself without her starting at him. It dawned on her then that she hadn’t eaten all day, or the day before that…since her mother had passed eating really didn’t seem important to her.

“Yeah actually, I kind of just realized I haven’t eaten all day.”

He poked his head through the doorway at her, a critical look in his dark eyes.

“Are you feeling okay?”

She giggled at his concern and nodded to him but he didn’t seem convinced. She listened to him open and close pantries and clanking pans as she stared at the television, not really paying any mind to what was on. A wave of loneliness hit her again as she stood and walked into the kitchen to sit at the old beat up table. Daniel was at the stove turning on the burners needed and setting down pans. Ground beef sat in the sink next to him with warm water to defrost; she guessed he was going to make them hamburgers. She pulled her knees up on the chair and wrapped her arms around her legs like a child as she turned her head to watch the television. A commercial for soap with a stupid jingle made her sigh; the song would be stuck in her head now. Daniel eyed her oddly as he shaped the beef in his hands into patties, yep hamburgers.

“You can watch TV. in there if you want. I’m sure it’s more comfortable on the couch.”

Kara never looked at him but he caught a glimpse of sadness in her eyes. He decided not to push anymore. She seemed so sad to him, but then again he couldn’t blame her, her mother had died only two months ago. But he had a feeling that’s not why she was so sad.

“Kara are you okay?”

She blinked and finally looked at him with her dark eyes that mirrored his own. She wasn’t okay, in fact she was terrified.

“Yeah, I’m fine Danny. Just tired I guess.”

He wasn’t convinced, she could tell by the look on his face as he flipped the patties and took the seat across from her. He studied her critically like he did when he was a child and she didn’t want to tell him something. The look still had its effect even if it was worn by a man now and she insistently looked away. The truth was, she had found her big brother again, her hero, but he was different now. She didn’t know him anymore and she was moving in with him. She was sure he wasn’t into Power Rangers anymore or the Ghost Busters, and he probably didn’t sleep in a racecar bed with Star Wars sheets anymore either. His favorite CD most likely wasn’t the Backstreet Boys and his favorite star probably wasn’t Brittany Spears.

“What’s wrong?”

His voice brought her back from her spastic thinking process as she brought her gaze to him again. He was deeply concerned with her; every detail on his face screamed it. She wanted to cry for him, he was playing hero again after all the long years of their separation.

“What’s your favorite T.V. show?”

He blinked at her, surprised by her question, which brought a giggle to her lips. He smiled back and sighed at her.

“Well if it’ll make you laugh…I like to watch a lot of things but I guess if I had to pick one it’d be Malcolm in the Middle. What about you?”

She thought for a moment, she liked to watch a lot of things too it was hard to just pick one.

“I guess Two and a Half Men is mine. What’s your favorite Cartoon?”

Daniel stood and attended to the now burning patties quickly flipping them before they got too dark.

“Futurama hands down.”

Kara laughed out loud at his answer, it was fitting that he would say that.

“I like Spongebob.”

She beamed as he groaned causing her to giggle at him as he put the patties on a plate and began to slice tomatoes and lettuce.

“I can’t believe you like that brain rot it’s so stupid.”

She nodded, not denying that it was in fact brain rot.

“Yeah but it feels nice to kill brain cells after using them all day at school.”

He paused a moment, remembering her transfer.

“By the way when are you graduating?”

Kara thought a moment, lifting her gaze to the ceiling as she sifted for a date.

“Two months from now. Almost to the end of my senior year.”

He nodded to show her he was listening; his back was to her at the moment as she watched him cut the last of the tomatoes. It struck her then how skilled he was with a knife, almost to a scary degree.

“Well I called earlier and told them you were transferring to this district. They’ll have your papers over soon but it’ll take a week. You’ll be alright here by yourself won’t you?”

He returned to the table and set out plates for them along with the burgers and some buns and the veggies he had sliced to go on them.

“I guess so, I just wish I didn’t have to miss school.”

Daniel glanced at her as she started making her burger starting with the meat then moving for the tomatoes.

“I think you could use a break, they said you didn’t take time off when Sally died.”

Kara looked at him when he said her mother’s name, pausing what she had been doing in the process.

“Er..I mean, mom.”

A slight flush grew on his face but not like a blush more like a nervous reddening. Either way the slip silenced them for a short time as they ate, the only sounds in the apartment coming from the television.

Daniel finished before Kara did and cleaned his plate in the sink before replacing it in the cupboard, taking up just enough time for Kara to finish and do the same. He disappeared down the hall and into his room for a while as Kara took a lonely seat on the couch, flipping through the channels until she found Spongebob. Daniel came out shortly after in a nice looking white button-up shirt and black kaki pants and a loose black tie. He wore dress shoes but comfortable looking ones and his black hair was combed back away from his face. He wore a shoulder holster on his left with a 9mm pistol and a badge was to his right hip on his pant line. A drop of sadness swept over her when she realized he was leaving for the night. She glanced at the clock on the wall, it was only seven. He moved to the door, trying not to meet her sad gaze as he slipped on his old brown leather jacket, which seemed so out of place with the rest of his outfit.

“I’ll be home around one. There’s food in the fridge if you get hungry don’t be shy it’s your place now too. And lock the door when I leave I have a key to get in so don’t worry about it.”

She nodded to him and gave him a fake smile as he left, closing the door lightly behind him. She sighed to herself as she turned the television up, she hated the silence.
