Miserable Mornings

Chapter Four: Miserable Mornings

Just as Trevor had been instructed, he went to wake up his youngest sister. He walked up the stairs without a sound and stepped in front of the door, knocking loudly and as quickly as he could. On the other side of the door he heard a quick ‘wha?’ before a loud thud, followed by a drawn out ‘ow.’ Trevor used all his strength to keep from laughing. Mission accomplished; he woke Aurora up like he was supposed to. Making her fall out of bed was a bonus.

From inside her room, Aurora struggled to free herself from her blankets that she had been tangled in from falling from her bed. She adjusted herself so she lay on her stomach and glared at the door, successfully getting her right arm out. “Trevor,” she glared at the door, knowing that it was him because he was the only one who ever did that to her, “that was mean.”

“I know,” Trevor replied, the floor creaked beneath him as he shifted his position in front of her bedroom door. “Hurry up and get your butt downstairs. Mom is almost finished cooking the eggs for breakfast.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m coming,” Aurora said, finally getting her other arm free. She heard Trevor retreat down the stairs as she got the rest of her blankets off. The small girl sat on the floor for a minute and stretched before getting up and fixing the sheets back onto her bed. “Morning, Vinnie,” she greeted her cat as she glanced over at him. He had slept on her night table last night, and lazily watched her pull a hoodie on over the tank top she used as a pajama top.

After pulling her hair out from under her sweater, she grabbed her brush from beside Vincent and began slowly pulling it through her hair. When she was satisfied she set her brush back down and walked to her door, glancing at her reflection from her mirror as she went past; all was well. With the feeling that today was going to be a very good day, Aurora opened her door and stepped into the hallway, Vincent had jumped down and was trailing closely behind her.

The door to the room beside Aurora’s opened up and Liz walked out, also still in her pajamas and her hair was an absolute mess. “It’s too early,” Liz whined as she came to stand next to her little sister. She leaned down and rested her head on Aurora’s shoulder. “Need sleep.”

“You’re telling me,” Aurora agreed, yawning as she lifted her shoulder and successfully getting Liz to get off of her.

Liz yawned as well and she spotted Vincent on the other side of Aurora’s legs. She bend down and held out her hand for him to sniff, thinking that if he let Chris pet him, he might have softened up and maybe he’d let her pet him as well. But when Vincent noticed the outstretched hand, he hissed and snapped his jaw at Liz in warning.

“Vincent, bad kitty,” Aurora scolded her cat, but he just turned his head and stuck his nose up in the air; he could be such a snob sometimes, but she loved him anyway. She then turned her attention the Liz and looked over to her sister like she was crazy; Liz knew that Vincent didn’t like people, so why the hell was she trying to pet him?

“Aw,” Liz whined again, “he still doesn’t like me.”

Aurora frowned at that. “Uh, yeah. I could have told you that,” she said. “He doesn’t like anyone, remember?”

Liz looked up at her little sister before standing up again. “Well, he likes Chris.”

Chris. Damn it. I forgot all about him, Aurora cursed as she felt all her hopes for this being a good day, leave her. How on earth was she ever going to enjoy her Christmas holidays with him lurking about?

“Vincent does not like Chris.” Aurora corrected her sister as she started walking down the stairs. She got halfway down the stairs with Liz when she realized that Vincent wasn’t following them and she glanced up to see him glaring at her. “You can’t possibly still like him. Not after what I told you,” she said. “He’s evil.”

Vincent gave a small hiss and a loud meow in protest. It was his way of telling her that he didn’t feel an evil aura coming from Chris.

“Uh, what’s going on?” Liz asked from her spot behind Aurora. To her, it looked like Vincent was disagreeing with her, and that he did like Chris, but she couldn’t be sure so she had to ask.

“Vincent doesn’t think that Chris is evil,” Aurora said, in an almost disbelieving tone.

Liz almost started laughing at her sister. “Ha ha, Vincent doesn’t agree with you for once in his life.”

“Shut up,” Aurora glared at Liz. She turned her temporarily hateful gaze to Vincent. “If you want to eat, you better come down now.” She didn’t wait to see if he was following before she finished going down the stairs. Her mood had gone from great to pissed off in a matter of seconds. Aurora realized that all the days that Chris and his father spent at her house would be just like this.

AN: Short chapter, I know. I just wanted to update to tell people that I decided not to give up on this story just because I was bummed out becaue my sister insulted it. That's right, it was my sister who made those mean comments, the one that the character Liz is loosely based off of. Kinda sad really, my sister bitches at me for not writing a good story, but she can't even write a good one of her own.

Anyways, I'd like to sent a big thank you out to all the people that reviewed and told me to continue. So thanks. A lot. It really helped me get out of the writter's block that I stumbled into after hearing the negative stuff from my sister.
