Kari woke slowly from her coma-like slumber. Her Master’s arm was around her as she laid with her head against his chest. She wasn’t sure what time it was, no daylight touched her Master’s tomb, but she knew it was time to eat by the complaining in her belly. She pushed that thought aside though as she examined her Master closer. He was asleep, or at least appeared to be. As she placed her ear to his chest again she detected no heartbeat, but his breast rose and fell, each time blowing warm breath onto the top of her head. Carefully, she lifted her head up to look at him, her chin resting against his sternum. He slept lightly, she could tell, he seemed keen to most everything around him ready to wake at a moments notice.

“It’s rude to stare little bird.”

Kari started at his voice, not expecting him to sound so awake as he opened a lazy gray eye at her. He smiled at her wide eyes as she quickly found something more interesting to look at on a wall.

“Something’s bothering you?”

She looked back to him at this, it was true, she was perplexed by his physical abnormalities.

“Master, why don’t you have a heartbeat?”

He laughed out loud at this, so greatly amused by her seeming innocence, but she was serious, and calmly waited for his laughter to pass.

“My heartbeat stopped years ago little bird, it ended the day my body betrayed life and the gods and bathed itself in death. A heartbeat, such a small thing, treasured so dearly by mortals and missed so painfully by the damned.”

“You miss it?”

The look on his face, the pain in his eyes, it was all she could do to keep from crying out in pain for him. She never thought of the significance of a heartbeat, she knew it meant life and survival but to him it was so much more. To him a heartbeat was mortality, it was peace. He smiled weakly at her, her inner emotions playing clearly across her face.

“I miss it dearly little bird. I miss many things that I am now deprived of.”

“Your freedom?”

His gaze shot back to her, sharp and clear, she wasn’t sure if from anger or defiance but she hoped it was the latter.

“My imprisonment is by far a deprivation I live daily with, but to suffer this is a small price to pay. I would spend lifetime upon lifetime in this tomb to spare the world a second scaring. Those who are damned are greeted by hell into depths and darkness eternal. That is where I stay, my body lives on and holds my soul hostage but I am living my hell for the sins I’ve committed.”

He stood and left her in his bed to watch him as he went gracefully to his dresser. He was naked, and completely unembarrassed of his bareness. Although it was enough to cause Kari to blush and look away. He returned to her with clothes and a smile, his cold composure from before completely melted and replaced with a far friendlier persona.

“Dress yourself and go to the mess hall. Get something to eat and return to me little bird.”

He stroked her hair and kissed her forehead as she sat up to obey him, covering herself a bit more modestly with the covers of his bed. She donned a baggy button up shirt, much like the one she had wore the night before, and a pair of shorts, which on her were more like kapris. She hastily ran her fingers through her hair and left his cell, feeling almost sad at her departure. She wasn’t quite sure but she felt as if she was leaving a part of herself there now, with him. Catching the scent of food as she reached the surface made her push aside any other thoughts but food as her stomach cried angrily at her. She went through the forest at a dead run but stopped when she hit the school boundary. It was a simple separation, a point where the forest stops and open grounds begin. She lifted her eyes slowly from the ground to take in the normal everyday activity of the students. Some saw her and avoided eye contact while others ignored her completely.

It was midday, and the lunch bell clanging made her stomach protest to her once again. Taking a deep breath she stepped onto school grounds as everyone began to file into the mess hall. It was a large, one story, narrow building filled with tables and a small kitchen to the back. She prayed to the gods that no one would notice her; she prayed they’d leave her alone. As she opened the doors to the mess hall and stepped inside, she knew her prayers had been ignored. Everyone was in uniform, but her, and everyone had already sat down and been accounted for, but her. She swallowed hard as she walked down the center isle; her only drive was her complaining belly. If she hadn’t been so damned hungry she would have turned back, she would have taken her physical well being into mind, but she was so damned hungry. Silence as she reached the kitchen window, the woman behind the counter staring at her as if she was any other student.

“Ma’am, may I please have a lunch?”

The woman chewed her gum noisily as she disappeared for a moment, returning with a tray of food, same as everyone else’s. An involuntary smile reached Kari’s lips as she took the tray from her.

“Thank you Ma’am.”

She nodded at her and smiled back as Kari turned and made her long and painful walk back to the door. As soon as she was outside and out of sight she quickly ran to a tree (carefully as to now spill her stew) and climbed up to its higher branches. She enjoyed the school grounds, they were beautiful and always so calming, but she couldn’t ever enjoy them when she was a student. She treed herself now for safety, and for a view to beat all others. She ate hastily and noisily, sopping up her left juice with the bit of bread she had been given. She sat back and let her stomach greet the hastily given food, enjoying the sunlight and the breeze, natural phenomenon’s she hadn’t experienced for almost 24 hours. She thought about how much she actually had missed the bite of the sun, which brought her mind sadly to her Master. He had been imprisoned for ages she figured, for at least as long as she had been alive. Confusion met her, he usually spoke to her when she was away, why was he so silent? It was as if he had already heard her question but she knew inside he hadn’t his warmth wasn’t there like it usually was when he was aware of her thoughts.

*Kari you must stay at the school grounds.*

Shock ran through her, he had used her name, he had never said her name before but now he used it in a dead serious tone.

*Master I must return to you I can’t stay here.*

*Don’t come back here Kari! Not until I say!*

She flinched at his quick and sharp rebuttal, something was wrong, he wouldn’t have used her name otherwise.

*What’s happened? What’s wrong Master?!*

Kari felt a stabbing pain rip through her chest, almost causing her to fall out of the tree as she clutched herself in pain. She shakily removed herself from her perch as the break bell clanged, making a run for the tree line as a second, less severe pain ripped through her. Something had gone so terribly wrong.

*Kari!*
