The Christmas dinner at the Defray house had happened as successfully as it did every year. The women and Jacob would cook while the men and Deens would play football. Then once dinner was served and everyone was done those who cooked got to relax while those who played football cleaned up the mess. Currently the women were in the recently finished basement watching Hitch on the big screen t.v. while Jacob went upstairs to sleep.
“I think we should set Deens up on a blind date.” Ali spoke from the couch she was lying on, gaining the attention of everyone in the room.
“Yeah that’s such a great idea, maybe it’ll go as well as the last one.” Brenda stated with great sarcasm.
“That one wasn’t my fault. How the hell was I supposed to know he was gay?” Ali defended herself as she sat up.
“Please the man dressed ten times better than Deens did.”Tina spoke confidently.
“That’s true.” Ali spoke thoughtfully.
“I don’t think it would hurt to set her up, I mean just as long as we find someone that she can actually talk to about the things that she likes.” Tina suggested to the group.
“That’s exactly what I did, I don’t know why they didn’t hit off.”
All eyes in the room looked at Ali in disbelief.
“Where the hell did you go to run into that guy? A gay bar?” Brenda chided. At the tone that Brenda was using had triggered a few hormones from Ali as she began to tear up.
Sarah sighed “Okay leave the last blind date alone, apparently it’s affecting us more than it did Deens. And exactly when did this blind date happen?”
“A while after Ali was introduced to the family, a few months before Alec brought you by.” Tina replied.
Sarah looked at Ali who was now blowing her nose. “Damn Ali that must’ve been years ago. You couldn’t have known Deens tastes that well.” Ali only shrugged as she headed toward the bathroom.
“This is a bad idea.” Brenda spoke up.
“How so? I mean if Deens had given up we might as well try for her.” Sarah replied
“Exactly, Deens takes pride in never giving up no matter what the situation. If she threw in the towel, it must’ve been one hell of a challenge for her. Which obviously means it’ll be ten times harder than we’re expecting it to be.”
“That makes it sound pretty hard then, and what if she gets burned again? As tough as she is she can only take so much.” Tina spoke thoughtfully.
“If she’s getting hooked up with the perfect guy there’s no chance for her to get burned.” Ali spoke as she emerged from the bathroom. The room was silent as everyone waited for Ali to continue. Once she was comfortably settled on the couch did anyone speak.
“What are you talking about? I’ve never seen a male stick around Deens if she wouldn’t be more than friends with them.”Sarah spoke, interested.
“Well, not as of lately but don’t tell me that you guys already forgot about Jack.” Ali said with a smug look on her face as lightbulb’s went off for the other girls.
“Even if we could set it up, how the hell would we get the guy to come down here?” Brenda exclaimed.
“That’s the great part, Vince said that John was coming down to visit his family and would pop in to visit us whenever he gets the chance. Which will probably be tomorrow morning.” A wide smile graced Ali’s features. Although before anyone said anything else everyone from the kitchen came tumbling down the stairs.
As Vince Settled in behind Ali so she was sitting between his legs he carefully examined her smile, he raised his eyebrows as he began to question his fiancé. “I know that smile, which only means that you’re up to something. Would you care to share what trouble you’re getting yourself into?”
Ali giggled lightly as she pressed her head against his shoulders. “Mm, maybe I’ll tell you a little later.” Vince pressed his nose into her neck as he began to place heated kisses along the base of her neck, causing her to moan. His hands went from around her waist to up her shirt, then he was abruptly poked in the head with a billiards cue. He turned around in irritation to face his little sister, one hand on her hip while the other held the cue.
“Can’t you see I’m busy here?”
Deens rolled her eyes. “As a Christmas gift to me can you please do that some where in private, or wait until I leave, which means you’ll only have to wait a few hours.” Vince shrugged and turned his attention to the television.
“You can’t leave tonight! Since when do you leave this early? You’re always here until new years!” Ali exclaimed, knowing if Deens left tonight there would be no chance of her and John meeting in the morning.
“Normally that’s what I do, but my boss wanted me to cover for the rush after Christmas. It seems that we get busier after giving away gift certificates.”
“Can’t you get out of it and leave tomorrow afternoon, that way-” But Ali was stopped in the middle of her pleading by Brenda as she stood beside Deens whispering into her ear.
“Deens, if you aren’t staying the rest of the week then you have to agree to do something for me.”
“Depends on what it is.” she whispered back.
“An old flame is coming into town for the week and he asked if I could meet him on Thursday for dinner, and normally I would go with him if I could bring Alec. That way Alec and I could bail if he got out of hand you know. But then I remembered how Alec likes to over react to things like that, so I figured I could bring you. That is if you’re free.”
Deens thought about it for a good minute and agreed, having no clue that she had just been set up for a blind date.
