Four
The two of them wandered the few blocks to the Abyss, chattering about nothing in particular. Upon rounding the corner that would take them to the club, Kiera felt a slight tickle between her shoulder blades, as though the girls were being watched. She threw a quick glance over her shoulder as they turned. Though there was nothing to be seen, she still couldn’t entirely shake the feeling. She turned back just in time to hear Lisa let out a disdainful groan. Kiera followed her gaze to a line of something-teen kids all in black shirts and pants with various adorning straps, buckles, and zippers.
Kiera gaped. “God, the amount of the Hot Topic kids gets bigger every day…”
“Yup. The most cookie cutter group of ‘individuals’ on the planet,” replied Lisa with a grin.
“You’re telling me,” chimed in a voice from behind them. Both girls turned to find the head bouncer looming over them like a stone wall turned flesh and blood. “Apparently, one of the girls has been here enough to know my boys’ and my names, but I couldn’t pick her out of a crowd to save my life.”
“Hey, Frank. Did you manage to get taller since the last time we were here?”
“Neh. Just forgot my normal shoes today.” He said, looking down and offering a motorcycle boot for inspection. “Just bought ‘em.”
Kiera cocked her head to one side. “Sweet. I’m sure you’re wife is happy about them,”
“Aww, come on, K. Wearing something like that, you have to remind me of the old lady?” He was joking of course. Frank and Ginger were still happily in love, and had been since high school. “Oh yeah, Ginger said to give you a huge thanks for those little cheesecakes - pumpkin, right? So…” he jerked his head in indication to follow.
Kiera looked at her friend questioningly. Lisa shrugged, and the two walked after Frank, and away from the heavily eyelined glares from more than one of the HT girls in the line. Understandable, not just that they were friends with the head bouncer, but because Frank was rather handsome. To say that he had a rugged look to him would be a bit too warm of a description. Both his face and his body looked as though they had been carved from granite that had fought back against the hammer and chisel. Combined with a confident half-stride, half-swagger, and a mean poker face, he was one of the best bouncers in the area.
As he led them into the alley on the side of the Abyss, he looked back. “You know, it’s good that you two only come by every other week. Otherwise, the crew here, the wife and me’d all have to go on some sorta diet. I don’t want to think about how many more miles I’d need to run if it were more. I’ve already got my whole crew showing up on days that the place is closed to get a bit of those treats you bring in.”
Lisa scoffed “Diets..ugh. You know better than that, Frank. We’d just have to come back with a vengeance.”
“Yeah. Devil’s Food cakes instead of the Angel’s food a few weeks ago. Those get a nice, rich buttercream frosting, you know.” Added Kiera, drawing out and enunciating every syllable.
“You’re cruel, K, very cruel.” Shaking his head, he pulled out some keys, and unlocked the back door. Holding it open, he bent over in a mock bow. “Ladies, consider this Ginger’s and my thanks.”
Laughing , the three of them entered through the employee entrance and into the short hallway it led into. Above the second doorway hung a rough wooden sign with words carved into it. When Kiera got a bit closer she could see the reddish lettering more clearly.
‘Abandon all hope ye who enter here.’
