Chapter 5
Chapter 5~
Nydia opened her eyes slowly. The trees surrounding her blocked out most of the light, leaving the forest dim. She sat up, an as her mind became less foggy from sleep a thought hit her hard. She could never go back. She could never see her brothers, or Osma, or even little Basil again. The last name caused her tears to fall, running down her cheeks and then splattering on the dirt like raindrops.
A voice in the back of her mind told her that she had to keep moving, that she had to get farther away in case Guthrie came looking for her. And, Nydia knew that the voice was right, so she wiped her tears on her sleeve and rose to her feet. She made her way south, away from her village and her old life.
She walked slowly for she was still tired from the running the night before. She only stopped once to gather a few berries to eat and then she began walking again. Because of her slow pace Nydia was able to walk until the sunlight disappeared. She stopped near a small stream. She kneeled down next to it and looked at her reflection in the water.
There was dirt and sweat on her face and strands of hair comecome loose from her braid. She cupped her hands and dipped them in the steam, bringing the cool water to her lips she quenched her thirst. Then she undid the front of her dress and pushed it down revealing her bare upper body to the cool night air.
Nydia was about to start washing when she thought she saw a glint to gold. Her arms came up instantly to cover her chest but when she turned and looked she saw nothing there. Slowly her arms came down from her chest and she dipped handsands back into the stream. She rinsed the sweat and dirt off her chest, arms, and face and then redid the ties on the front of her dress.
When she was finished she curled up at the base of a tree and tried to go to sleep. Slowly she slipped into slumber. She thought she saw another glint of gold but she was to tired to look. She surrendered to sleep, and as she slept the sound of a wolf crying home filled the air and sent birds flying from their perches in the trees.
~~~
The first thing Nydia noticed when she opened her eyes was that she was hungry. She got up and crawled around in the surrounding foliage, looking for a patch of berries. She was about to give up when she spotted a bush with red berries hanging from the branches. She smiled and picked as many as she could hold, before returning to the stream.
She knelt by the stream and washed the berries, and then popped a few into her mouth. As she sat and ate she thought about her current situation. She realized that she was not prepared for anything. She didn’t know how to hunt, and she would not always be able to find berries to eat. She had nothing to hold water in and she knew that she would not always be able to find it easily. She did not have flint to light a fire, the only clothing she had was what she was wearing, and winter would come eventually.
And even if she did reach a town she had no money with which to buy supplies. Suddenly she was reminded that there was one way she could make money in a town, but she quickly shoved that idea out of her head. She would not sell her body no matter how desperate she was.
She finished the berries and began to walk again, the sounds of the stream becoming farther and farther away. By mid-day hunger was gnawing at her stomach. She tried to ignore it , but after another hour of walking she could go no further. She collapsed to the forest floor, her legs and stomach were aching, and there was a pounding in her head. She cried her self to sleep, half-hoping she would never wake up.
~~~
Nydia felt something on her shoulder as she slept. She willed it to go away, to leave her be, but it would not. She felt something shaking her slightly, and she whimpered softly in her sleep. The shaking stopped for a moment, but then began again, more insistent this time. The movement brought Nydia awake slowly, but when she realized that it was a man next to her she shot up. Her eyes were wide and her frantic gaze was met by a pair of glowing golden eyes.
AN: My first ever cliff hanger!!! *evil laughter* I know everyone hates cliff hangers but I really felt that this was the best place to end the chapter. The original, un-edited, chapter was much longer but I was reading it to see how many revisions I would have to make and the chapter just seemed to go on and on and on for forever and a half, so I ended it here. So sorry, but all this means is that you will have to come back and read to find out what happens, which is happyness for me!!! *more evil laughter* But no worries, I\'ll update soon, so just keep your shorts on and be patient,
reviewers:
Zelix- is This soon enought for you!? TeeHee, glad you like so far
Antaris- I\'m glad you like the story and the characters I\'ve introduced so far, and I do plan to continue, if you keep reading ;-)
