Chapter 39

Everything was spiralling out of control, but maybe that had happened awhile ago. Julian still felt so ignorant about what was going on. It felt like he was the only one who didn't quite fit into the situation. As usual, he didn't quite connect with the clique no matter how hard he wished for it. Or maybe he did, but couldn't see it. It was difficult to tell what would constitute 'fitting in'. Surely it wasn't enough just to be Kyun's lover.

What a silly thing to be worrying about! Kiyoshi had gotten hurt apparently and Luo took off somewhere again. Those alone provided plenty of more important areas for him to focus his worry. Not to mention that poor dog. It made him nauseous just thinking what happened to that animal. Nele must have been absolutely devastated. The little redhead sure was quiet when they arrived back.

After being nicely told not to forget his cell phone again by Kyun, Julian had taken it and headed out again. It was too dangerous to go outside, and Takuya was busy taking care of Kiyoshi or something, so Julian had to occupy himself. He decided to run laps through the hallways, though he'd have to be as light on his feet as he could so that he wouldn't disturb the neighbours too much. His shorts kept riding up, so he had to stop a lot to fix them before he got a wedgie. Not his typical work-out attire, but he hadn't had the time lately to do laundry of the few clothes he had with him. The shorts were a bit too small – had them since high school – and his t-shirt was too big.

Still, he ran on, working up a good sweat. Had to be careful around corners in case people were there, but he didn't pass many in the hallways. The few he did pass weren't paying attention to him anyway. After 3 and a half laps, he figured it was time to take a break. He bounced around on the balls of his feet for a minute or so to let his heart-rate gradually calm down and then found the nearest hallway windowsill to lean against.

Seeing the beautiful weather and all the people bustling about made him envious. It would have been so nice to be able to go out safely. The selfish part of him screamed that it was unfair; he had nothing to do with this little war, but he knew that wasn't right. As long as Kyun was in danger, he wouldn't run away for the world. Julian sighed and gazed longingly at some kids tossing around a football. Not his sport, but that didn't mean he couldn't play!

A truck pulled up beyond some bushes where no one out on the street would see and someone got out. It all looked familiar for some reason. When Julian narrowed his eyes, trying to peer through the branches of a tree that was in his way, he soon realised what it was. That large shape in the truck had to be Ramesh. Fear pulled him off the sill and he pressed his back against the wall next to the window as he took out his cell. His fingers fumbled with the buttons, but he got the number right on the second try.

Why couldn't Kyun pick up right away? It wasn't good for his heart that it kept ringing. On the third ring, he finally answered. "Hello?"

"He's here Kyun!" Julian's whisper was loud with scared excitement. "Ramesh is here. He's parked outside and I'm looking right at him!"

"Shit..." Kyun paused a moment, enough for the other to hear his breath getting agitated. "Are you safe? Where are you?"

"Yes, I'm in the hallway of the fourth floor. I'm pretty sure he hasn't seen me. Even if he looks up, he'd have to be looking very carefully to see me through the leaves." Julian peaked out, making sure the large body was still inside the truck. "He's just sitting there in the truck, hidden across the street, but someone else got out and disappeared into the bushes. I didn't get a look at them but I don't think they went far. I would have seen if they tried to leave that spot."

There was silence for a while. "Alright. Keep watching. If you see any developments, call me. If you think he might have seen you, hurry back here. Okay?"

A smile quirked his lips. Even if he didn't exactly fit in with the group, at least he might have done something helpful. He could only hope nothing bad would happen to the people he cared about because of it. "Okay, I'll stay right here... What are you going to do?"

Slight hesitation. "I'm not sure. I'll talk to the others. See you soon." With that, the line went dead.

~~~~
Well, that was as much of an advantage they'd had so far, and they'd be stupid not to make use of it. Kyun was sitting in the couch next to Nele, having spent the last while trying to cheer the guy up a bit. Luckily it seemed to be working.
The phone call apparently made the guy very curious, but there was no time to explain it to one person at the time. He quickly got to his feet and jogged over to the bedroom where Takuya was busy nursing Kiyoshi. "Takuya! Get out here right now! Ramesh is outside!"
That seemed to get everyone's attention. Good! Kyun was in no mood to fight for it. As soon as they were all gathered nearby, he continued, "Ramesh is sitting in his truck outside, and someone - his crazy brother, probably - is hiding in the bushes nearby. We should do something, but what?"
"He's here?!" The redhead was on his feet in an instant and looking at the door. "Why don't we kill both of the dumb fucks? Sneak up on 'em and shove molotov cocktails down their fucking throats?"
"They could just drive off." Choi's voice was a cynical monotone, and his determined gaze wandered over the others. "Besides, if there's three of them, we might not win a fight."
Takuya smirked at that. "Maybe Ramesh will drive off alone in a bit? Rick said he'd leave that stupid fuck brother of his to watch us."
"So what are we supposed to do? Sit around and wait with the hope that he'll drive away?" Despite the obvious anger and frustration behind Nele's voice, he wouldn't meet eyes with any of them. He shook his head and clenched his fists as he began to pace back and forth. His voice quieted when he added, "Isn't there something we can do?"
Nothing further was said for the next little while. Kyun wondered whether he should be calling Luo, but just as he was reaching for his cell phone, Takuya broke out into a chuckle. "I'll call him!" He looked over at the Koreans with a broad smile, before explaining, "Luo gave me his number last night. I have an idea..."
It was hard to trust the Japanese's judgement over something like that, but the mention of an idea was intriguing. "What would you tell him?" Kyun asked, his voice coming out as partially skeptical, partially hopeful.
"I'll make him drive away." Takuya smirked, then fished his phone out.
