Crash II

Crash II

“The GPS confirms that we are going the right way.” Rillian stated, as he read the small screen on the inside of his gauntlet computer.

“Good. These signs are not easy to work out. Why the void do they have to have two names for everything, Newbridge-on-Wye, Bontnewydd ar Wy, Brecon, Aberhonddu; it is most confusing!”

Sudden raucous “music” came from the back of the car. Valdagerion almost swerved in to an oncoming car, and Rillian bumped his head on the metal roof, both startled out of their skins.

“What is that awful noise?!” Rillian cried out, covering his ears.

“It is a ring tone. Jack told me.” Darrah informed them, drawing out a small silver devise that was not only making the tinny tune, but also vibrating as if some form of angry insect was trying to escape from it.

Rillian snatched it off him and began to roll down the window.

“Hey you can’t throw it out!” Darrah protested, making a grab for it.

“You almost made the Rhi’Arran crash this vehicle.”

“I need to answer it. It’s Jack’s phone he gave it to me so that he and Mary could stay in touch.”

With ill grace the warrior handed the phone back to Darrah who read the display. “Jody, I do not recognise that name.”

“She is one of Mary’s acquaintances.” Valdagerion elucidated.

“Oh.” Darrah replied. He then flipped the phone open holding it to his ear, and switched to speaking the mortal’s language, speaking it with a fluency that Rillian and Valdagerion could not quite follow entirely.

“This is Darrah………. I am Valdagerion’s friend…… er yes Val, no we haven’t met……….Jack is not here, he just lent me his phone……..Mary has collapsed….”

Valdagerion almost swerved off the road again, brining Rillian rather closer to a large bolder on the verge then he would have liked. “Mary’s ill? What’s wrong is she ok?”

“Hold on……..Yes, that is Val.” Darrah let forwards addressing Valdagerion. “Mary seems to have had a seizure before fallen unconscious. Her friend has summoned medial assistance. She is very worried about her and called thinking that it would be Jack.”

Valdagerion went cold at this news, his fingers griped the steering wheel until he heard a crack and looking down saw that the plastic would forever hold an imprint of his fingers. “We have to go back.”

“But what of the ship?” Rillian objected. “Nearwen and Perran.”

Valdagerion was already pulling in to a lay-by. “They will have to manage by themselves for a little while.”

Darrah nodded when he caught Valdagerion’s grim gaze in the mirror, and put the phone back to his ear. “We are coming now…..How do we find where you are………..I have got that, we will be as swift as we can.” Darrah flipped the phone shut. Valdagerion was waiting with abated breath. “They are talking her to a place named Hereford Accident and Emergency.”

“How do we find that?”

“Jack’s navigation contraption.” Darrah said, finding the black box that Mary’s brother had given them earlier in the day. “I knew that this would come in handy.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Valdagerion arrived at the large new looking building, swinging about the circular approach. He was feeling distinctly tense. It had been a longer distance then he had expected and Valdagerion had counted every nano second, cursing time and space. Every delay making him grind his teeth in frustration, and there were many; Mary’s silver vehicle was not exactly built for speed nor manovrability. Perran’s warning chased around his head – what is Mary really was dying? What if he was too late?

It had been stressful negotiating the complex of urban roads within the small human city. The lights of the oncoming cars stung his sensitive eyes, but he would go through the fires that lay at the centre of the sun to get to Mary.

He could feel that Mary was close somewhere but it still took them a few minuets to work out how to get to the right area of the human’s medical facility. Mary’s friend was sitting in what they assumed was a waiting room, she got up at their approach, the usually vivacious woman looking weary with concern.

“Where is Mary?” Valdagerion asked, desperate to see her.

“She is in one of the cubicles through there.” Jody said tossing her head towards a set of double doors. “She has not come to yet. It was really frightening, she was trembling and then all of a sudden her eyes like rolled back and then she fell to the floor convulsing. The doctors are with her at the moment; they think she had some kind of seizure but they are worried because she hasn’t regained consciousness yet….. Hey, where are you going?”

Valdagerion did not wait to hear the rest, going through the doors in the wake of the receptionist’s protests. His keen sensed seeking her out.

“Wow, impatient.” Jody commented pursing her lips.

“He has been very worried.” The dark haired male explained. “I’m Darrah by the way.”

Jody held out her hand. “Jody.” She shook his briefly. “I had better go and explain to that lady over there that he is with Mary or he’s going to end up getting chucked out by security.”

“They can try.” Rillian replied with a sardonic twist of his lips that could have passed as a glacial smile.

“Tsh.” Jody dismissed this, and hurried over to the beat faced receptionist to give a hasty explanation, before returning to the others.

“What did you say?” Darrah asked curiously.

“I lied; I said that he was her fiancé. They only want to let close family in.”

“Fiancé?”

“Er, it means engaged to be married. You know.”

“Well that’s not entirely inaccurate.”

“Since when? They are not engaged Mary would have told me.” Jody exclaimed, “She’s my best friend, she tells me everything.”

“Mary doesn’t know yet.” Darrah said cryptically.

“Oh.” Jody breathed. “Oh. Like that is it? Well I can keep a secret.” She gave a stifled girlish squeal of excitement, clapping her hands together. “Aww, Mary’s getting married!”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He had to get to Mary, everything else was irrelevant. What ever their argument had been was now totally eclipsed by his concern. When Valdagerion found her, he stopped dead in his tracks. There were a number of human’s in the room, but he only had eyes for the occupant of the single bed. Mary was covered with wires, and machines beeped and flashed around her bed. She looked like as if she was but asleep. It reminded him of how she looked after he had rescued her that first time. So fragile, with an ephemeral child like innocence, a beauty as elusive as a spring dawn on water.

“Mary.”

“Who is this?” A mortal demanded angrily. “You can not be in here young man. You need to leave.”

Valdagerion ignored him, going down on one knee before the bed clasping the young woman’s lax hand, kissing it he felt a burning in his eyes, as tears of worry and love welled up there, clouding his vision. “Oh, Mary I am sorry. This is all my fault.”

“Young man did you hear me, you can not be here we are trying to….”

“Val?” The young woman croaked, stirring weekly.

“I’m here Mary.” Valdagerion soothed, kissing the back of her hand and reaching up to stroke some lose curls back from her face.

Mary struggled to open her eyes, but finally focused on his face. “What happened?”

“Miss Elgar you had a seizure.” The doctor in the room said, moving forwards to shine a light in her eyes. “You have been unconscious for over an hour. You are in Hereford hospital.”

Mary’s face twisted in confused panic. “What? I can’t have… I have never…”

“Yes, your friend told the paramedics that you have no history of epilepsy, or ever having a seizure before. Now what can you remember before you fell unconscious?”

“Oh god. Nothing, I ….” Mary’s trembling hand came to touch her mouth in a frightened gesture.

“Had you taken anything, any drugs?”

“No…parecetamol for migrane.”

“Nothing else?”

Mary grew more distressed, like a small child just woken from sleep. “I …can’t remember….”

Valdagerion seeing her anguish caught hold of her hand kissing it again, holding her gaze with his as he moved his body in such a way that he shielded her from the other human’s scrutiny. “Sush my love. It will be alright.”

[Oh Val, I am so scared.]

[I am here and you are safe.] The elf assured her.

“Young man you are in our way, and Miss Elgar must answer my questions so that we can diagnose her. Having fallen unconscious for so long is a serious concern.”

“I know that.” Valdagerion scowled looking over his shoulder. “But she has only just regained consciousness. Your questions are clearly distressing her. Let her be for a few minuets.”

The middle aged mortal frowned clearly not used to having his authority overridden let alone questioned. “I think that you should leave. Hospital policy states that a patient in this condition should not receive visitors apart from close family until they have stabilised.”

Mary intervened, struggling to speak still. “No. I want him to stay…..he’s my…”

The doctor opened his mouth to speak but clearly thought better of it as Valdagerion stood to his full height. “I will be back in a few minuets to run some tests.”

Valdagerion watched him leave with barely veiled hostility before turning back to his beloved little mortal. “Mary, I was so frightened when I heard you had collapsed.” He admitted to her as he carefully sat on the bed.

“Oh Val, Isn’t it dangerous for you to be here with all these people, why have you come?” She reached up to touch his cheek, and he held it there in his own strong palm.

“The pull of a thousand black holes could not keep me from you in your need.”

“Thank you.” She smiled faintly. “Oh Val I’m so tired.”

“Then rest for now.” Valdagerion urged, and watched as she fell back in to a deep sleep, comforted by the rhythmic waves that the heart monitor displayed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Valdagerion appeared at the door, and Rillan walked over to him. The Rhi’arran looked care worn as they spoke in low voices. “How is she?” Rillian asked.

“She is stable now, and sleeping. But I fear for her, the seizure was a serious one and even now she is disorientated, we need to take her to Perran without delay; she needs elfish technology the humans will not be able to treat her if Perran’s theory is correct.”

Rillian nodded. “The human’s have not noticed any abnormalities?”

“The healer who has been treating Mary is all but blinded by his own prejudices. He seems to think that it was caused by illicit substances.” Valdagerion replied angrily. “I will get Mary out of here before they have a chance to run any more tests. There is one thing however, I managed to translate some of the scrawl that passes as human writing; there are two vial’s of blood that they took from Mary, these must be found and retrieved before they fall in to the wrong hands and expose our kind.”

“I understand. I will send Darrah through to keep watch for you as you move the girl.”

Valdagerion gave him a quickly went over the details of what he wanted to happen before Rillian went back to Darrah to tell him of the plans. He noticed Mary’s companion from earlier hovering near by probably desiring news, but he ignored her, speaking in the elvish language for Darrah’s ears only.

“What’s going on? How is Mary? The mortal woman asked.

Rillian would have continued to ignore the mortal, but Darrah laid a hand on her shoulder comfortingly. “Valdagerion said that she is conscious, and is a bit confused but otherwise unharmed.”

The warrior cleared his throat impatiently. “We have no time to waste Darrah, the Rhi’Arran wants you to help keep watch while he moves the girl. And I must track down some blood samples they have taken from her.”

“Now?”

“Yes, the longer we stay here the more chance of our discovery. And the more chance that any treatment that Perran could offer will be too late- that is if it is even treatable.” He added the last bit with rather more bitterness then he had intended.

Darrah nodded soberly in understanding as Rillian informed him of where Valdagerion and Mary could be found, and having found a floor plan of the building while they were waiting, now used this to get around the reception. Rillian then set off to find the blood samples, but he had not got out of the door before he felt someone grab his wrist the shock of this unknown and unlooked for contact bringing him to a halt. He looked down at the hand in surprise and was infuriated to find it was the mortal girl.

“Hay, I asked you what’s going on?”

“I heard.”

“It’s rude to ignore someone when they ask you a question.”

“It is rude to touch someone without their permission.” His cold gaze ran up her arm and to her face to meet her oddly fierce green, brown eyes.

The woman let go of his wrist as if she had been scolded, but she did not back away; however she did change tack, her approach less confrontational, almost pleading. “I want to know what is going on, what all this rush is about. I know that for some reason you don’t like me, but Mary is my best friend.” She pointed back at the hospital angrily, but then instantly shifted back to an anxiousness that seemed peculiar to females. “And I had to see her like that it was really horrible, I just want to know if she is going to be ok.”

It struck a cord somewhere with Rillian, how many times had he be concerned for Valdagerion? He supposed there was no harm in informing the mortal. “We are getting Mary out of here.”

“What?” The human seemd utterly perplexed by this. “When.”

“Now.”

“Hey wait, you can’t just take Mary out of hospital she just had an epileptic fit or something, I’m no expert but it’s really serious….”

Rillian had no time for arguments, least of all with a mortal female and he began walking again, but she followed in step jogging to keep up with his long stride.

“She should stay in at least overnight, or until they have the test results back…”

“There is nothing that these healer’s can do for her.” The elf said firmly, finally losing his patience, turning to face the annoying creature. “She will see our healer.”

“You mean doctor right?”

“Yes, that is what I meant.” He sighed, rolling his eyes up in exasperation.

The woman seemed to stop in her tracks, and raised her dark brows. “Hmm, Mary said you were well healed. Like some kind of royalty. I guess it would make sense you have your own doctor.”

“I have no idea what any of that means.” The elvish warrior said.

This did not seem to bother the human. “You know she is not well enough to fly to Switzerland, or Norway or wherever you come from.”

“She will not have to; our doctor is to be found in the Elan valley.”

“Is he any good?”

“The best.”

“Well in that case you might as well use my landrover, there will be more room for her to lie down in.” The woman said.

The woman offering to help was the last thing that he had expected and he managed to accept the offer politely, perhaps she would be of some use after all. “Now wait here for the others.”

“Where are you going now?”

“I have a task to attend.” The impertinence of the mortal and her questions!

Rillian then went back in to the building to seek out the blood samples. But once within the building the elf realised that he had no idea where to start looking for them. To his chagrin there were too many people to simply take mortal’s memories and the information he needed, in fact he would be lucky if they even knew anything of use. His knowledge of the human language was perhaps not good enough to find out subtly without razing suspicion. Nor could he read the human signs. Frustrated he glanced around looking for anything that he might recognise, but the only work he knew was Exit.

“Having trouble?” Glancing behind him he saw the dark haired mortal had followed him, soliciting him with a falsely sympathetic smile.

No, was on the tip of his tongue. But it died there as he gave her an appraising glance, realising he could make use of the mortal. Perhaps it was not wise to involve her, but he could see no way around it. After all she could read the primitive symbols that passed as the human’s written language. “You will help me.”

She folded her arms across her chest, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Oh really. Mary said Val was bossy, I guess that he is not the only one.” Rillian might not have understood the words precisely, but he did know that her tone was mocking and defiant.

He turned to face her fully. “It is a matter of importance.”

The girl shrugged. “So what do you want, directions to the loo?”

“No. I need you to help me find…” Wait a second, did she say….Rillian had to physically keep his mouth shut in outrage.

“Help you find?” She prompted. 5

“There are two vials of blood they took from Mary, we must…find them.”

“Blood samples? Why?”

Rillian just glared at her unable to find the words, he tried to make an explanation without giving away why they needed the vials, but it made no sense even to his own ears.

“Ok, ok don’t hurt yourself!” Jody stopped him. “I will help you.”

He gave an exasperated sigh. “Thank you!”

“Oh, so you do have manners after all.” The woman quipped. “Come on I will ask at the desk.”

He watched her shimmy off towards the desk, and hurried after her catching hold of her bicep pulling her back close so he could speak only for her ears. “No, use your head. None of these mortals can know what we seek or why.”

“Ah, good point.” She shrugged him off, and lead him back outside. “Ok, let’s think about this.” The woman lent up against the wall for a moment apparently deep in thought. She suddenly looked up. “Come on follow me.”

She led him to the back of the building where there were a number of smaller buildings grouped together. “Look, this is the lab.”

Rilian was just tall enough to peer inside. “There are blood vials.” He said relived, and began looking for a way in.

“Over here.” The woman waved finding a doorway. She pulled at it and it would not give. “Oh, it’s locked.” She looked around tapping on a small white box. “Dam I think we need an electronic fob to get in here, we will have to find another way in, perhaps there is a way through the hospital.”

The woman disappeared around the corner. Rillian studied the box, and gave it a quick shock, shorting the box, the lock gave with a satisfying click. “Mortal.” He called softly. “Come back.”

Her face was eloquent in its surprise as he stood holding the door waiting for her impatiently. “How did you?”

“Hurry mortal.”

“You speak funny, do you know that?”

“I am not from around here.” He shook his head. Clearly Valdagerion’s female was unusually clever for her race. This mortal was terribly slow on the uptake. Rillian glided down the hallway looking from room to room, not waiting for the woman. As he rounded a corner he ran in to a mortal man walking with a trolley, with lightning reflexes he hand a hand over the mortals mouth, and then quickly took what memories he needed, leaving the man to stagger away in a daze – as if he had received a blow to the head.

“Jeaze, you could have waited.” The woman appeared in the hall, seeing the man walking towards her she realised her mistake instinctively tried to shrink back. Rillian gave an impatient jerk with his head, encouraging her over. Glancing again at the man she hurried past to the elf’s side. “What was wrong with him?”

The elf shrugged, then pointed down the hallway. “The vial’s should be in there. Wait here.” He creped closer to get a look inside the large room, there were five humans. Too many to subdue without causing a scene. “Monta Attoya!” He growled under his breath as he went back to the woman.

“No good?” She asked.

“There people in there. Let me think.”

“Hey, I have an idea.” The woman said. “Look a staff room.”

The elf had no idea of the significance of that, but let her drag him in to the small room. He watched as she appeared to be looking around the room for something, but her eyes kept going back to the metal cupboards, that appeared to be locked. “Dam, I was hoping that someone would have left out their clothes. I wish I could get in to the lockers.”

From where he was leaning Rillian have one a sharp smack with his elbow, cracking it open.

“Neat trick. Man has skills.” The woman said, obviously impressed. She pulled out some clothing. “Ah, perfect.” The woman began to strip, and Rillian had to admit she had a neat figure – for a mortal that was. The woman glanced up. “Er, do you mind?”

The elf remained standing watching impassively. The woman rolled her eyes at him and then twirled her finger in the air. “I’m changing.” Rillian turned about after a moment. “Ok, you can look.” She said at last, now dressed in a blue dress. “What do you think; do I pass as a nurse?”

“I don’t know what you mean by nurse. That is a disguise yes?”

“Yeah.” The woman nodded with a small laugh as she put her hair up with a neat twist.

“Mortal are you sure you know what you are doing?” He asked restraining her by the arm, giving her searching look.

“No, but it’s the best I can come up with at such short notice. I’m not exactly a super spy. Now you wait here.”

He let her go, unhappy but there was nothing else he could do. Time passed, and he waited growing more and more certain that she had failed – what was he doing relying on a mortal, a foolish young female one at that. At last he heard the sound of quick female steps in the corridor outside.

“Rillian, you in there?” She asked popping her head around the door.

Where else was I going to be he thought, but followed her out. “You have them?”

“viola.” She smiled, and astonished the elf as she drew out the two vials from her cleavage handing them over to him. Perhaps she was cleaver then he had given her credit for.

“How?”

“These silly.” The woman smiled archly, squeezing her breasts together at him. “A bit of flesh and the men go all silly.”

“Then they are fools.” He stated acidly despite finding it hard to draw his eyes away from her ripe curves. “Come, we must go and help Valdagerion and Mary.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mary became aware of Val’s warm body next to her on the bed, the feathery brush of his hair on the bare skin of her arms, and the light tickle of it over her face, his intoxicating, distinctive scent. Mary felt as though he had been drifting through a dark, frightening place, so the elf’s presence was comforting. She felt something tug at her skin on her forehead, then a slight sting in her left hand before he applied pressure over the area.

What was he doing?

When she gave a small whine of protest - still to lethargic to open her eyes - he held the limb firm and stroked her hair to sooth her. “Patience, my love.”

He released the pressure over her hand, humming in thought over it before he stuck something over it. Mary drowsed for a moment until she felt his fingers over her chest, peeling something from the skin over her heart. Dimly she realised that he was removing the electrodes that the medical team had put on her. It stung slightly and she reached up to still his hands. She wasn’t quite sure whether she was still dreaming or not, her mind felt sort of cottony, but any dream with Val in was a good dream. And she guided his hand down to rest over her breast, arching up in to the hold when he did not instantly get the hint.

She heard him chuckle. “There is no time for that my love.” But he did give her breast a gentle squeeze, and rub in parting.

Mary heard him calling her name, and felt him stroking her cheek. “Mary, you need to wake up now.”

She moaned in protest, fighting the layers of sleep.

The elf however was insistent. “Mary we have to leave this place now.”

“Why?”Mary was surprised by this request, she had just been carted in to hospital in an ambulance, and Val wanted her to go before they had even figured out what was wrong with her. He must have read her reluctance, for he left forwards and cupped her face in his hands.

“Mary please just trust me in this. I need to take you to see Perran.”

Something seemed highly odd about Val’s sudden decision to take her somewhere only a few hours ago he had expressly forbid on the account that it was too dangerous, but she was too tired to ponder the issue, so she just accepted it. Suddenly extremely weary she nodded faintly, it was even an effort to speak a few words, but he needed to hear them. “I always trust you.”

He seemed relieved, and bent to kiss her softly. “Let’s go.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Valdagerion had helped Mary back in to her clothes, before supporting her as she staggered along besides him. [Shouldn’t we hurry before they catch us?] Mary asked through their mental link as Valdagerion made his way along the cubicles towards the door in a leisurely fashion.

[No, that would draw attention to us. If we take our time they will assume that nothing is amiss.]

[Val, I don’t know if I can make it. My legs feel like jelly and I’m dizzy.]

[Just a little further] The elf encouraged her, dispute the sharp stab of concern he felt.

At the door he saw Darrah, keeping a watch for them. Valdagerion’s keen hearing caught the voice of the mortal who had been so trouble some earlier. Over the desk he spotted him, the man was likely to cause problems if he saw them. Valdagerion caught Darrah’s eye and jerked his chin in the direction of the mortal healer.

Darrah nodded.

Valdagerion guided Mary along towards the door, nothing betraying the tension he was feeling. To his consternation the doctor was now walking down the hall towards them, but as yet was busy reading a chart, but all it would take was for him to look up for them to be undone.

Darrah however had it well in hand, he now came through the door and at a brisk walk managed to bump right in to the doctor, and using a flip of his wrist had managed to send the Doctor’s papers flying everywhere. In the general pandemonium that followed Valdagerion was able to swing Mary up in to his strong arms slipping through the doors and out to where Rillian and Jody were waiting for them.

“Val.” There was something in Mary’s voice that caused a cold sensation to run up his back.

“Yes my love.”

“There’s something wrong with my eyes.” Mary said trying to be calm, but a note of panic broke through.

“What is it?”

“I can’t see.”
