CHAPTER THIRTY
Seth sat quietly for a long moment. From the oil-burning lanterns drifted the scent of cinnamon. Isaac waited, fearful and tense. Then, Seth held him tighter, pressing his face into his hair. “After I served the sentence for Aurora, I needed somewhere to go for peace.” His breath puffed warmly over Isaac’s scalp and ruffled his hair. “I knew something drew me here. Just not what.”
Isaac pushed away his lover’s arms, freeing himself, and stood. An unsettling feeling of betrayal chewed at him. The taste of absolute terror filled his dry mouth. “Did you know about this, quote, legendary line of Receivers that could command even very powerful vampires?”
Seth’s inky hair slid forward over his wide bare shoulders as he tilted his face down toward the floor. The shiny curtain shielded his eyes. “I felt things. Wanted. Needed. Despite not knowing what.”
As if the ground under him crumbled, Isaac backed away from his vampire. “I get this whole hunter-prey vibe, man. And, you didn’t exactly answer my question.”
“I don’t want to lie to you, Isaac.”
Anger rising he challenged, “Then, fucking don’t.”
When Seth looked up at him, those flames flickered in his burgundy eyes. “I followed what drew me, and then my instincts.” His voice held an underscore of tenderness. “I could never have hoped to find what I have in you. With you.”
Striving to remain unmoved, Isaac returned, “Your ‘instincts’ put a target on my back and now my cousin’s.” He rubbed a hand over his face in frustration. “Did you know you had found a blood whore, or not?”
Seth nodded slowly. “I suspected.”
“Suspected.” Isaac’s temper spiked. Standing in his lover’s subterranean lair, fresh from a confrontation with a scary female vampire, and, with his cousin’s safety in question, it proved too much. Stepping closer, he gripped Seth’s hard chin between his thumb and forefinger. “I suspect I will hire bodyguards and leave you to sort out this mess.”
Seth’s entire demeanor altered. “Leaving me, boy?”
Isaac released the vampire’s chin and straightened. “I’m a man. And, yes. Leaving you.”
Seth had him rolled onto the bed and pinned in a wink. His cool, silky mane framed their faces. “You are my mate.”
Isaac gazed up at him, dazzled by the beauty of the creature that had brought him to this. “In this moment, I would have to reply, yes, unfortunately.”
“You love me.” Seth leaned closer.
Isaac averted his face to avoid the other man’s mouth. “Again, unfortunately.”
Warm, sweet breath accompanied the words. “Do not reject me. I am your mate, love, and pet.”
Isaac rebelled at the word. He surged up, commanding, “Get away, vampire.”
Seth retreated obediently, while shedding blood-tinted tears. They traced the savage contours of his attractive face. “Now you know you may use your power on me.”
Infuriated, Isaac followed the other man. “What else have you suspected?” Stepping forward and raising his voice, he demanded, “What else?”
“Nothing.” Seth stood close to the wall. Larger and more physically powerful, he yet presented an impression of submission.
Isaac thought about Jay and Kon. “If I leave, it divides the attraction. Don’t be an asshole and turn them away.” He swallowed with considerable difficulty. A flush of stress heated his chest. “You …” Isaac’s voice broke. “Don’t follow me.”
Staggering backward, Seth lifted his arms. He stretched them out creating an anachronism of a crucifix. “Please, love. Do not deprive me.”
A flush of dark power joined his rage. “What happens? Can’t you just jack a victim?”
Seth remained for all intent and purpose, pinned to the wall. The flames in his eyes beckoned. “I want only you. Isaac, my mate, please, have mercy.”
He attempted to conjure sympathy. “Stop using that word in this discussion. You’ve brought a shit load of trouble. A big by-the-way apology tells me you may have endangerered me with prior knowledge. Man, you’re like plutonium. No one can handle you without the risk dying.” He dressed only as much as necessary and returned home with Seth attempting to follow. Isaac whirled as he ascended the steps to his front porch.
Seth had departed. Kon stood at the base of them. “Isaac, please.”
“I hear that word a lot.” He inhaled a deep breath. “I will make sure I’m protected, Kon. You cover my cousin.”
“Do you understand the risk you take?”
Isaac nodded. “Yeah, and I don’t give a rat’s ass. Take care of Jay and yourself. Good luck, my friend.”
He had made a few queries about queries concerning personal security details. It seemed so quiet in his house.
Isaac showered, stretched out in his bed and fell asleep.
He sensed something, jerked awake.
Men in what appeared like SWAT gear surrounded his bed. Rolling toward the nightstand where he kept a loaded .357, Isaac found himself intercepted. A cloth covered his nose and mouth. An odd smell filled his palate and lungs. His entire body seemed to sag. Through the haze, he saw Seth. “Don’t do this, man,” he managed to mumble.
“It’s done, boy.”
