********

The silence encompassed the room. Jayce looked between the Detective and her captain. They were framing her for the death of her brother. The honest expression residing on Detective Grants face proving it was true.

“What?” Detective Grant looked at Jayce.

“The only suspect we-” She was cut off abruptly.

“You're telling me, I willingly welcomed you into my home, only to find out that my brother is dead. To top that off you're sitting here telling me I'm the only suspect?” Detective Grant looked to her captain..

“Miss Carter please calm down.” He began before Jayce turned and glared sharply at him.

“Calm down? My brother is dead and you're blaming me!” She snapped.

“Miss Carter, were not blaming you, you're simply a suspect” Captain Bennett said as he released a frustrated sigh.

“Simply a suspect? Hello! You just told me that there are no other suspects. So therefore, you're probably gonna push it on me and call it good. I know how cops work.” She growled and clenched her fists.

“Miss Carter, please, there's no need for hostility.”

“Well, what else did you expect?” Jayce snapped.

“Miss Carter, I'm sorry-” Detective Grant was once again cut off.

“You're sorry? Sorry for what? That you cant seem to find his real killer and just want it to be done and over with? I've been paying attention Captain Bennett you think you had me pinned from the start. Now tell me why you're assuming its me”

“We can't release that information, Miss Carter.”

“Of course not, that's exactly how I expected it.” Jayce shook her head before looking back to Detective Grant. “Take me home.”

“Miss Carter...” Captain Bennett started.

“No, don't Miss Carter me, I said take me home. You have no right to hold me, so therefore I am free to leave when I wish, and seeing as your Detective drove me here I find it fitting that she sees me home.” Detective Grant looked at her Captain expectantly.

“I'm sorry Miss Carter, but based off the circumstances of the case, we've decided that its in your best interest that we hold you in protective custody for the night.” Captain Bennett said as he turned towards the door.

“Protective custody? The hell you will, you have absolutely no right to hold me.” Jayce said as she moved towards the door. Detective Grant held out her arm to stop her only to have it pushed away. Her hand found Jayce's wrist to hold her in place before the woman turned and swung. Her fist colliding with Detective Grants face.

Jayce's eyes went wide as the realization hit her. She hit a police officer. It hadn't fazed her until she watched as the woman almost fell to the ground.

“Shit.” She murmured as she looked at the Detective then her captain. He wore a smug look on his face as he called two uniforms into the room. One wielding a pair of hand cuffs as the other rushed to Detective Grant's side to determine if she was okay.

“Miss Carter, you're under arrest for the assault of a police officer.” The blonde male stepped behind her and began to cuff her. “You have the right to remain silent, anything you do or say can and will be used against you in the court of law...” Jayce zoned the voice out as she looked into Detective Grants eyes. There was no anger or contempt just sympathy as if Jayce fell into her captains ploy to get her into custody.

“I'm sorry.” Jayce gazed at the woman's, now swelling, cheek before letting her head fall as the two officers escorted her out of the room.

Melissa and her Captain followed the officers out of the room. The two of them watching as Jayce disappeared down the hall towards the holding cells, before Melissa turned to her Captain.

“What the HELL!” He shrugged and looked down the hall then back to her.

“It got her into custody.” He turned his attention to her swollen cheek. “You should get that checked out.”

Melissa watched her Captain walk away as she rubbed her cheek.

“Hell, that hurt.” Sighing she looked in the direction of the holding cells then shook her head. No, tonight she'd leave the woman be, tomorrow they'd be hounding her with questions about her brother. Turning towards the squad room she decided to take more time reading the ME's report and dig up information on the Carter Family.
