I turned up on a barren but beautiful beach. Where it had been sometime around lunch where I had been, the sun was now sending red, purple and blue streaks through the sky, giving the waves and sand a picturesque quality. I smiled to myself and sat on the sand, watching the waves come in and back out. It successfully had a tranquil effect on my body and mind. Eventually, I moved away from the water and found a seat under a palm tree and rested my back against the trunk and closed my eyes.

I was in the room again. I turned my head to the right and saw her standing there her orange red hair glimmering in the light giving the effect of a head on fire. A tinny voice came from the hidden transmitter telling us to get ready.

“Prototype #1 codenamed Neon.” I felt the power surge through my body as the collar released the limiter on me. “Ready”

“Prototype #523 codenamed Genesis, Ready.” her eyes glinted as the powers took hold.

“Begin test.” Electricity and fire spewed from designated areas in the room sporadically and we proceeded to keep the elements from touching our bodies. She was having trouble, but not as much as the others… usually they’re dead by now any way. Without any warning the elements stopped spewing and I turned back to the one way mirror.

“How do you do it so well?” she asked breathlessly. I gave her a blank look, feeling the collar lock my powers again. I rolled my eyes and moved to the door. “Neon?”

“It doesn’t matter how. You just have to get better.” I said coldly as the door opened to let us out. I saw her wince at my cold tone out of the corner of my eye and dismissed her. The only thing that had me working with her was the fact that the other five hundred and twenty one experiments were dead which meant it was only a matter of time before she joined them. I ran into the director on my way down the halls.

“So, how do you think Genesis is working out?” he asked stopping me with his hand

“She’s going to die soon.” I replied simply. Strangely, though, he had a smirk on his face as I said that.

“Somehow I doubt that very much Neon.” I looked past him to another scientist holding what seemed like blood samples.

“Why?” I asked, still focused on the scientist.

“Because she has some of you in her.” he replied. “We still need to do a few more tests and graphs before she’s completely stabilized, however it’s very promising.”

“That’s another way of saying she’s the guinea pig that’s going to die.” I stated looking back to him. His eyes were a strange green-yellow mix that tended to unnerve the people who worked under him.

“You didn’t.” he walked away.

‘He has a point.’ I saw her come out of the room see me and start forward only to stop short and fidget. I scoffed and walked off, noting the scientist from before calling her over.

So she has me in her, big deal. I was watching her from my place at the back of the room, a tray of food before me and I was picking at it. I fought the limits of my collar and sent an apple from the pile on the counter opposite her flying at her head. She noticed it barely in time and managed to catch it looking at the pile in shock. Some of the scientists and lab techs noticed the movement and turned around, not suspecting me ion the slightest. I heard a few of them mumbling things

“That’s the fifth time this week.”

“Her reflexes seem to be getting better.”

“Why is it only aiming at her?”

“Better her than us.”

“Maybe she shouldn’t sit so close to the food.”

“Next time it might be the pie.”

“Dude no, that’s a waste of pie.”

“Why? Not many of us are eating it!”

“Shhh, she could hear us.”

“Doubt that.”

“True.”

Honestly if I could hear them and see the slight blush that was growing on her face, chances are she could hear them too. I got up and tossed the food that I didn’t eat into the bin. The director saw me and his voice carried over the hall

“Are you feeling alright Neon?” I turned to him and nodded as he began to make his way to me, “You’re sure? You seem to have stopped eating.”

‘I’m fine Dr. Richards.” I reassured as he regarded me closely

“You need to keep your energy up.’ he said after a moment’s stare-down “Try to eat more.” I nodded and brushed past him…

I woke up staring at a bright blue sky with wisps of clouds overhead and the sound of cars approaching. ‘Time to move.’ I stretched briefly while I was still laying down, noticing the sand swirling around me. I watched it for a moment before stopping it’s movement and getting up.

Something soft and furry landed on my head and I raised my hand automatically to catch it before it fell to the ground. A brown tabby looked up at me with grey eyes that reminded me vaguely of my own. “Where do you belong kitty?” I asked looking for a collar, or any indication that he or she belonged to someone. On finding nothing I looked her (I checked) in the eye and said “Your choice. Come or stay.” before putting her on the ground. She looked at me curiously before putting a paw on my leg and climbing back up my pants to perch on my shoulder. I petted her briefly before starting to walk, shaking off my past as I went.
