Wake Up to Leave

Wow. This story is getting a much better response than I was anticipating. My other story is hella jealous. =) I'm glad you guys are enjoying and I promise the subject matter won't always be this dense/bad. It's going to go up and down but an up moment should be coming soon. Maybe next chapter. This chapter is a bit dry because a filler moment between here and there. I hope you guys still like it though. Let me know what you think and enjoy!

kirjava01: I'm still formulating Michael's background but as of now, he's been mute his entire life.

“Michael? Michael!” My eyes fly open and I continue screaming until I realize that I’m in the hospital and Zach is yelling at me. Hands are holding me down and my ribs are a searing pain making it hard for me to breath. I start to struggle to breath because of the pain but then I realize the real problem is the nurse holding my shoulders down.

“I can’t let you go until you’re calm.”

I’m calm. I’m calm! I mouth frantic to get the man off of me.

“No you’re not. Calm down.”

It hurts too much. Please. Get off. I’m sobbing at this moment desperate to get away from this pain.

“Please sir. Get off of him.” Zach’s voice tells me that he is on the verge of tears. The man finally gets off of me but the pressure hardly lets up. My ribs are killing me.

“We’re going to have to check to make sure you haven’t caused further damage.” I nod and try to find the morphine button. This pain has to go away. Zach hands me the button and I press it immediately. A doctor comes in and the nurse shoos Zach away. I am thankful that the doctor puts me under because the pain ebbs away under the drug tide.

I surface to somebody softly saying my name. I open my eyes and look to my mother stroking my hair. “Hey baby.”

Hey Mom. I tear up when I see her.

“Hey son.”

Hey Dad. Thanks for coming all the way out here. The hand movements thankfully don’t make me feel sick anymore.

“Of course baby. We have to come look out for you.” The look of sadness in her eyes made me realize she’d been told.

You know don’t you Mom? I look away from her.

“We talked to the nurse. She told us about your… experience and the nightmares. She told us that you didn’t stress your ribs and you’ll be able to go home later today. You’ll be going back to your dorm and Zach will take care of you whenever we’re not over.”

Ok. That sounds fine. I'm ready to leave this place anyways. I look around when I notice Zach is missing. Where is Zach?

“He went back to the school to talk to the RAs and the Hall Director about how you’ll be out of commission for a while.”

Wait. My hands move franticly. He won’t say anything about what happened right? No details. I don’t want people to know. I’m not ready for that. He… Mom lays her hands over mine.

“Calm down baby. It’s ok. He’s just going to tell them that you ribs are broken and you can’t get around.” I lay back relieved that nobody else will know. “Michael. Do you want to talk to us about what happened?” I look at my Mom and I know she just wants to help me but can’t find it in myself to tell her the details. I shake my head. “Ok baby. By the way, the man who found you left you this. You were still asleep when he came by.” She hands me a letter but the envelope says to not open it until I’ve left the hospital. A nurse walks in and introduces herself to my parents then comes over to me.

“How is your pain level? Has it gone down?" I nod my head. My ribs don't really hurt anymore. "Good. You’re going to be leaving us in a few hours. Here is the medication you’ll be taking to relieve pain. This is a sleeping pill to stop you from getting nightmares. The stress on your ribs during that time could easily cause more damage to the area. Now the instructions are as follows…” I only pay minor attention to the nurse as I stare at the letter, wondering what’s inside and who saved me.
