Chapter 3
“Welcome to McDoogle’s. Can I take . . .” Mark paused halfway through his mantra as his eyes widened in shock. “What are you doing here?” The words came out in a breathless rush and Mark immediately tried to get a grip as he forced himself to appear unaffected by the handsome man standing before him.
“Is that any way to greet a customer, Mark?” Simon asked with a twinkle in his piercing, blue eyes. It was the same person Mark had slammed with the door outside of the convenience store over two weeks ago.
Mark blushed bright red as he remembered the scene he’d made that day and the chemistry that had sparked between them afterward. “Of course not, and I apologize. I was just surprised,” he stammered as he wiped his sweaty hands down his greasy apron and cleared his throat. “What can I get for you today? We have double cheeseburgers 2 for $2.00 or the Big Smack combo is on sale for $3.49. That comes with a large drink, fries, and a chance to win . . .”
“What I’d really like,” Simon said, leaning toward Mark as if they were having a private conversation, “is to know when you have your next break.”
Mark’s mouth immediately fell open and he stammered stupidly for a moment, trying to find something to say. Finally his brain seemed to catch up with him and he was able to croak, “I’m sorry if I gave you the wrong impression the other day, but I’m not interested in a date. I already live with someone so it isn’t an option.”
Just for a split second, Mark thought he saw disappointment cross the rugged planes of the other man’s face. Before he could decide, it disappeared under a million dollar smile. “Now, I owe you an apology,” Simon explained gently. “I never meant to give you that impression. I only wanted to give you my information and talk to you about making arrangements to pay the medical bill from the other day. You see, after we parted ways a huge knot came up on my forehead and I had to go see my doctor after all.”
As the other man’s words sank in, Mark thought he might die of embarrassment. Then his heart began to pound in his chest. How in the world was he going to manage this one? After he’d paid his share of the bills he’d only had about forty dollars left to see him through the rest of the week and he’d wanted to put at least half of that in on the groceries. Jason had been paying for those out his own pocket for nearly a month . . . While it was true that Mark was the one who’d insisted on that arrangement, Jason would ask quite a few questions if Mark suddenly decided to drop the issue. Mark pushed his worries to the side and looked back up at Simon with a friendly, open expression.
“My break is in thirty minutes, so feel free to have a seat anywhere you’d like. I’ll come out and talk to you when I get the chance. That is, unless you have to be somewhere,” Mark added hurriedly, not wanting to seem like he thought the guy’s schedule revolved around what Mark wanted.
Simon smiled brightly, his eyes crinkling slightly at the corners as they lit up in response to Mark’s reply. “That’d be fine with me. Can I get a grilled chicken sandwich, plain, and a side salad with ranch dressing to eat while I wait? Oh! And an iced tea, sweetened, if you don’t mind.”
“Of course,” Mark said, blushing and still kicking himself for acting like such a fool earlier. “That comes to $5.89. Would you like to add an apple pie to that for 99 cents?” he asked, more out of habit than anything. Simon nodded that he would while he reached back to retrieve his wallet from his pocket and fish out a twenty.
“You’re quite the convincing little salesman,” he observed as he handed it over with a grin and waited for his change. Mark blushed again and felt like crawling beneath the counter to hide in the boxes of condiments kept there, but instead gave Simon his best cashier smile.
“Thanks,” he murmured as he finished up their transaction. “$13.05 is your change and it’ll be just a second.” As soon as Mark was finished counting out Simon’s change, he took the opportunity to escape as he gathered up the requested items as quickly as possible and placed them on the tray.
“Please enjoy your meal and I’ll be out as soon as I can,” Mark said dismissively once he was finished. He was already dreading the encounter because he seemed to have a gift for embarrassing himself in front of this handsome man and was sure that their later discussion would be no exception. Even without that coming into play, there was the undeniable attraction between them to consider. Even now he could feel it building and knew that Simon was dangerous to his peace of mind.
Simon simply nodded his understanding and said, “I’ll be waiting,” before grabbing his tray and moving toward the back of the restaurant. Mark watched him go, half in a daze, until the man disappeared around the corner. Then he let out a distraught sigh and turned to grab a towel and wipe down the counter.
“You cheating on Jason?” a curious, hopeful voice asked from somewhere behind him. Hearing those words spoken out loud, even from his good friend’s lips, was like someone pouring ice water over his head, and for a second Mark thought he might be sick at the very idea. To be honest, he’d more than once wondered what it might be like to be in a normal relationship with someone like Simon. One where he could do whatever he wanted without having to worry about his lover getting jealous or becoming insecure.
“You know I’d never do that,” Mark replied honestly in a level voice as he wiped the counter one last time and turned to give Chandra a dirty look. She’d inherited her Korean mother’s height, so that meant he had to look quite a ways down to do so.
His good friend and shift manager blew the look off with a glare of her own, her irritation at what Mark had said clearly evident in the way she narrowed her dark, almond shaped eyes and let out a sharp breath. Then she tucked a thick, strand of her black hair back into her hat and grumbled, “I get that, but that still doesn’t mean that you can’t dump him and find somebody else. Who’s that guy you were talking to, anyway? He seemed to know you pretty well.”
“That’s the man I told you I clocked on the head the other day. He’s here to collect the money I owe him for the doctor bill.”
“Too bad,” Chandra murmured to herself with a sigh and a roll of her brown eyes. “I always said that Jason was bad news. That other guy seems a lot more laidback.” With that she walked away before pausing again and switching back into manager mode as she turned to give him a no-nonsense look. “Oh! And as of now you’re on break. Go take care of your personal business. We don’t need any more men hanging out in the lobby waiting for you.”
“Please don’t say anything like that in front of Jason,” Mark pleaded at her retreating back.
Chandra just waved him off and kept going as she called out, “Wouldn’t dream of it in a million years. Now, go! You’re off the clock.”
If Mark were the type to curse, he would’ve done it then and there. The last thing he needed was for his coworkers to start talking about another guy hanging around when the review for his promotion was coming up. Instead he slipped off his apron and went to the cooler to grab one of the chef’s salads from the case and a pack of Thousand Island dressing to go with it. Then he waited for his replacement, Daphne, to arrive. Once she did, he had her ring up his meal and headed for the dining room, pausing only a moment to snag the cup of tea he kept hidden under the counter before hurrying to find Simon. The entire walk to the table he spent thanking his lucky stars that Jason had been respecting his space since their last argument and not hanging out at his workplace.
Basically, if Jason were to come in and see Mark sitting at the same table with another man and chatting with him, he’d be extremely upset. It wouldn’t help matters when he found out that Mark had hidden the convenience store incident from him, either. Now he almost wished he had told him about it and dealt with the third degree that would’ve resulted. Telling him this late in the game would be a hundred times worse. That’s why the option to borrow the needed money from Jason was totally out of the question. He’d have a hard enough time explaining to his lover why he was even more broke than usual since Jason liked to keep track of those kinds of things and knew that Mark hadn’t made any unusual purchases lately. With a sigh, Mark pushed the nagging thoughts aside as he approached Simon’s table and returned the man’s friendly smile with one of his own. Then he sat down, determined to clear things up as quickly as possible so that he could send the man on his way.
