Prologue

“Listen up, Airmen.” General Wolfe paced at the front of the briefing room, his ever judging blue eyes looking over the assembled team he was given. One officer and seven enlisted personnel. And they were supposed to end the war like this... “You mission you’ve been assigned is the most dangerous one yet. The president is not backing you on this, so if you get caught, you’re shit out of luck.” No one moved from their seats. Why would they, after all, they were dedicated to their country. Nodding at their silent decision, he turned his eyes to the satellite picture up on the screen. “We’ve been informed that this Cold War base has become the potential headquarters for the man known as Gregory Shvernik, the leader for the party and it’s military. I.E. the modern Hitler. You are to simply infiltrate the base, eliminate Shvernik and his associates, and get the fuck out of there.”

“What are our restrictions?” The young lieutenant in the front row called out. Wolfe merely looked at him before answering.

“To not get killed or caught. Like I said, if anything happens to you, the President isn’t taking the blame. He will not recognize you if you are caught.”

“And if we succeed?”

“Then you’ll have the joy of a job well done.” Wolfe replied, eyes going back up to the screen. New graduates were always the hardest to deal with. “You’ll infiltrate using route Three-Alpha at 0100. This will take you straight to the front door during the guard shift change. The targets seem to stick to the largest building on base. It’s the only one that isn’t falling down from years of bad maintenance. Remember that this base was made in the Cold War, so some areas might be a bit more dangerous than others. You are authorized to use deadly force, however-“

”We got it, Sir.”

“Alright then.” General Wolfe nodded and clicked off the projector, staring once more at the team. This was America’s fighting force. “Get geared up. You fly out at 2000.”

“Sir!”

The infiltration was perfect. The guards at the gate had been shot and killed, the snipers had either fallen asleep or weren’t paying attention, and best of all there was cover all the way to the targeted building. Things couldn’t have been more perfect. The Lieutenant led the way, pausing briefly here and there to make sure no one had spotted them. They had used the open and clear technique to enter the building, and all seemed to be going well. Too well...

Team Alpha was the offensive, going through room after room to eliminate whoever moved. Team Bravo was the defense, making sure that Alpha had not missed anyone. They had reached the third floor when the Lieutenant heard voices, the thick Russian accent filling the air. Alpha had taken position, one man against the wall ready to throw open the door while the other three prepared to enter. What they didn’t expect was the door to be opened for them.

A fat Russian stood in the doorway, eyes wide as he looked at the fully armed soldiers before him. “Enemy!!” He yelled out in Russian before someone from Bravo fired, killing him on the spot. Whoever was left in the room triggered a loud, screaming alarm, lights and sirens going berserk all over the base. The Lieutenant yelled to abort as loud as he could before picking up to run, both teams following him. But it was useless. By the time they had exited the building they were surrounded by guards, all weapons aimed at them. Useless weapons, but weapons all the same. Another Russian voice was heard, a deep and malicious voice. Then there was pain, then darkness. The mission was a failure...
