Chapter 2 – Someday
Alanna woke on the floor of her kitchen to a knocking at the door, she groaned. She may have slept through the night, but her neck would never forgive her for her place of rest. For a second she almost forgot why she was there, her mother’s death, the creep on the phone, but it came back and hit her like a ton of bricks and she knew no matter how much she might wish it, it all did happen.
The knocking continued. “Coming!” She called and set the phone on the counter and went for the door. She looked out the peep hole and saw two men in suits she had never met before. She assumed it was someone who knew her mother or dealt with her professionally. “Hello?” She asked as she opened the door.
“Alanna Morrison?”
“Yes.” She replied eying the men in front of her. “And you are?”
“Confirmed, it’s her.” Was all he said and he said it to a small microphone that stuck out of his left ear.
“Excuse me?” She asked as the men continued to ignore her. “Fine, don’t speak, but don’t expect an invitation in.” She began to close the door until the door of a black luxury vehicle in her driveway opened and a man with graying hair and an expensive suit stepped out. He was facing the other way at first, but when he turned around, Alanna nearly collapsed, like she had the day before.
“How many men do you want inside Mr. President?” The rude man in the doorway asked.
“None, guard the door.”
“Sir I don’t believe that is a good…”
“This is one meeting I don’t need you guys for.” Finally he turned to his daughter and looked at a young female version of himself, but he could also see something that was distinctively Sarah in the girl.
Neither of them spoke for a few seconds. Finally Alanna broke the silence. “Holy shit!”
“Can I come in?” Matthew asked, ignoring the outburst which was to be expected.
Well I hoped that since we're here anyway
We could end up saying
Things we've always needed to say
Alanna nodded and he followed her into the living room on the front of the house. “Um, I’m not really sure if I should apologize for last night, but…”
“I’m sure it was fairly overwhelming, no need to apologize. How are you doing?”
“I feel like this is all a nightmare that I will wake up from, and mom will be here.”
“Alanna…”
“Why didn’t she tell me about you?” Alanna asked, she doubted he would know, but there was a chance.
“I don’t know for sure, but I think she was just as afraid to tell you as she was to tell me. She didn’t want your life to fall apart or mine and…” He saw her face fall when he said it and he knew he’d made a mistake.
“Is that how you feel? Like your life has fallen apart? I didn’t ask you to come here or even acknowledge my existence, I never cared to know you, and I definitely don’t need you in my life. If my being your daughter is such an inconvenience to you I think you better leave. My mom told you because she was afraid for me, I can figure that one out, but if you feel obligated to provide for me, don’t I can take care of myself.”
“My youngest daughter said the same thing, and I’ll give you the same answer, I do not feel obligated to do anything for you, I want to. You are my daughter and even though I know your being in my life could change everything that I know; I still want to get to know you. It doesn’t matter to me that I’ve met you now rather than twenty years ago when you were born, I want to know everything I can about you.”
“Are you sure you’re my dad, she could have been wrong.”
“When I look at you I see bits of all of my girls and even myself. There is no question of who your father is.” She just nodded then sat down with her arms tightly crossed in front of her chest. “I know this is completely insane for you and that there has to be a million things going through your head, but I want you to know that I will give you anything you need. If you need time to yourself, I can go home, if you want help with the burden of your mom I can help you with it, I’m here so that if you don’t want to be, you won’t have to be alone.”
“There is really nothing to take care of; she made sure it was all planned befo…before it happened. She didn’t want it to fall all on me.” The tears began to fill her eyes again and Matthew’s heart broke to see her in so much pain. No young girl should have this to deal with, but especially not his own. He took a step closer to her and put his hand on her shoulder, at first she pulled away hating his touch, but then she looked up into his eyes and saw a look that her mother gave her. One that said that he was there for her no matter what, and for the first moment she realized that she didn’t need to do everything for herself, she had someone to lean on. No one could replace her mother, but among all the hurt she felt, it felt good to have a father. She slowly stood up and her tear filled eyes met those of her father, she had his eyes, she realized. She leaned closer to him and knelt her cheek on his chest and immediately he held her closely.
“Oh, I wish I could take away everything you’re feeling but I can’t, but I promise that I will do everything that I can for you.” He said as she cried openly and soaked his expensive suit with her tears.
“I wish it wasn’t her, why couldn’t she be okay, people beat cancer everyday, why couldn’t she? She was so strong and I needed her, I still need her. I would do anything to have her back. I would kill for things to be how they were before grade twelve. We were so happy. She hated how useless she felt and she only ever wanted to be healthy. Now she’ll never get to see all the big moments in my life, and I hate that.” She pulled back from him and looked at him. “Does it ever go away? Will it ever feel normal again?”
“It will never be the same again, you know that already and that’s what scares you, but I can say that you will be happy again. The pain of losing her will always be there, but soon you’ll feel like it’s okay to live again. You won’t feel this lost forever, I can promise you that.”
“Why can’t soon be now?” She sobbed childishly.
“You know the answer to that.” Her head bobbed in a nod. She finally let go of him and sat back down.
Alanna took a deep breath. “Now what?” She asked barely over a whisper. “What are we going to do now that we know each other. I want to know you, but I don’t want my existence to mess with your campaign, I know you are to run for re-election this coming fall and an illegitimate daughter could completely ruin that for you and I don’t want that…”
“That is not important. If my country doesn’t want me as their president because I chose to take care of my own child, they obviously do not understand my take on the importance of family.” Alanna just nodded and the two were silent for a minute or two. “Your mother says you were planning to go back to school this fall. If you are interested you could attend school at George Washington, my other girls are attending there this fall and if you were interested…”
“Applications were due months ago. I was accepted to school here.”
“If you were interested though, I do have some pull in that department, I could talk to the dean of students, we golf together.”
Alanna nodded. “Golf together…you really entering a new universe Alanna.” She said to herself under her breath.
“Sorry?” Her father asked.
“Never mind. Um, well, wouldn’t it be easier if I stayed out of the way, even if it was just for the first year, I wouldn’t get in the way of you or your family, or your presidency.”
“Honestly, even if you didn’t come to Washington with me, it would be much easier if you were to go to school in the United States.” She looked puzzled. “Being that here in Canada I only have limited pull, it makes it much more difficult for me to keep you protected, and sorry to be frank, but if we let this be known to the public, you will need protection at all times.”
“Protection, wow I never thought of that. I’m really not that important.” She replied then sighed.
“I happen to think otherwise, I would do anything to make sure you are alright, my family is the most important thing in the world to me and I will do whatever is necessary to protect them, and believe me, I have the resources to do it.”
Now the story's played out like this
Just like a paperback novel
Lets rewrite an ending that fits
Instead of a Hollywood horror
“Yeah you do don’t you?” She laughed.
“Alanna, listen, I know this will all be a huge stretch for you, and you have already had one major blow this week, but after we are finished with everything that needs to be done here I would love for you to come home with me. I want to know you, and I would love for you to go to school close enough that I could see you everyday, and I want you to come home to my house everyday. I know I am putting you on the spot right now, and that is not fair, but you are my daughter and I want you in my life the same way the rest of my children are.”
“You know, since I found out yesterday about mom I didn’t really know what to do with myself, but I think that I do want to get away from this, even if it is just temporarily, I would love to escape to a new life. I think that’s why mom approached you in the first place; she hoped that I could start a new life after she was gone. And if she wanted it, so do I, because she was the smartest person I’ve ever met. She was wonderful.” She added in a whisper.
“I hadn’t seen her in years, but if she was anything like she was back in university, she was the most amazing woman I’ve ever met.” He smiled. “So you really want to do this?”
“I am willing to try.”
“Me too.”
