chapter 3

After dinner Josie and Brian had a cigarette and Josie went back to her room. Josie just could not get her mind off Brian. She hated the fact that she was right about him being an asshole. She hated his opinions and comments and she hated that he was good looking. Brian being good looking made it impossible for her to fully ignore him. She hated herself for having that weakness. But it wasn’t just that she reasoned, she liked how he was brutally honest. After a while she decided to go have another cigarette. She was pleased to see that Brian was no where in sight, having had all she could stand for the day.

“Hey sexy smoking girl, you got an extra cigarette?” it was gangsta one from this morning.

“Fifty cents.” she said. Brian had told her all about cigarettes after dinner. Fifty cents for a name brand 100, forty cents for a short.

“You catch on quick. I’m Jerome.”

“We can pretend I didn’t.” she said, giving him a cigarette. “I’m Josie.”

“I know,” he said, lighting the cigarette. “Brian came in the room a half hour ago and couldn’t stop talking about you.”

“Brian is your room mate?” she guessed. “All good I hope?”

“Sounded good to me. Are you really a virgin?” Noting how all the color drained from her face after asking, he said “Hey, its cool. Its harder to say no than yes. I respect you.”

“Just don’t tell anyone, okay?”

“Don’t worry about me, I’m not telling. If I told then I’d have competition.”

“Okay, well, I’m just gonna…” she trailed off as she saw Nick heading towards her from the rec. “I told Nick I’d watch him draw.” she said, and took off towards Nick. Did he honestly mean that? She took Nick by the arm and led him back into the rec.

“What’s up?” he asked once they were inside.

“Uncomfortable conversation. I needed to get out.”

“So you’re only using me?”

“Well I might be curious about your drawing as well.” she said, and it was the truth. She was curious about the dog thing.

“Lets head upstairs then.”

The art room wasn’t much, a couple tables, a container of mixed crayons/markers/colored pencils, sat on one table. There was room off to the side; an office and storage room combined. In there they had clay, beads, and colored paper. Josie decided to make a bracelet while Nick drew. She made four before she said she wanted to go out for a cigarette. He had drawn a picture of a hot pockets box. She put the beads away and told Nick she’d see him later. She went down the stairs and outside to the smoking area. Josie lit a cigarette and slapped herself on the forehead for being so stupid. Sitting there making bracelets while he drew a fucking hot pockets box! She should have just kept talking to Jerome.

“Why’d you hit yourself?” a voice asked from behind her.

“Because I’m an idiot.” she said as she turned and there was Nick, two inches away staring down at her. The fact that he could go a very long time without blinking made her nervous. She moved a few feet back and he followed her.

“Why do you say that?” he asked, still staring down at her.

“I don’t know… what I’m doing here.” she invented. “I don’t fit in at all or anything.”

“I don’t fit in either.” no shit she thought. “You wanna go for a walk and talk about it?”

“I think I’m going to go back to the dorms after this cigarette.”

“You’re not afraid of ghosts are you?”

“No… why?”

“This place is haunted by the old patients. A couple of them talk to me. You see that building over there?” he pointed to a piece of the old dorms that was visible through the trees “if you look through the windows you can see balls of light floating around.”

“Yea, okay.” I said unbelievingly.

“I’ll show you.”

“That’s okay, I’ll just finish my cigarette and go to bed.”

“Scared?”

“No. I just really don’t care.”

“You’re scared.”

“I am not.”

“Then come check it out with me. It’ll take five minutes.” she knew she was trapped, if she didn’t go everyone that had heard them would think she was scared, and she wasn’t; of the ghosts or balls of light or whatever. She just didn’t want to go with Nick.

“Fine.” she said, and started walking towards the massive building. When they reached the woods she realized how late it actually was, about 8:30 and there wasn’t much light in the woods at all. It hadn’t seemed so far away but it was. The five minutes Nick said it would be was used all in reaching the building. Josie went to look in a window and Nick told her they had to go to the side of the building to be able to see them. Nick took her hand and led her around the corner of the building and pulled her to the side of a window. Josie looked back towards the smoking area only to realize she couldn’t see it, or anything; just the building and the trees surrounding it. She pulled her hand out of Nicks and looked in the window. Nothing. She’d said it aloud and turned to walk back. Nick caught her by the shoulder and turned her around. He wrapped his arms around Josie’s, keeping them flat against her sides and he kissed her.

Josie couldn’t believe she’d been so stupid. She’d started wiggling immediately after he’d grabbed her but he wasn’t loosening his grip. He started to try to force his tongue into Josie’s mouth and she did the only thing she could think of; she bit it. Nick let go of her immediately and she took off running. She didn’t even think of which direction to run, just away. She reached a road and followed it until she came out at the parking lot where the bus stop was. She knew where she was now, another 15 feet and there would be a path on the left going right to the dorms. She could hear Nick running somewhere behind her, but she was too afraid to turn around. She made it to the walkway and had to run uphill about 60 feet to the entrance. The handicapped ramp to the boys dorm was on her right, 10 feet down also on the right was the stairs down to the boys entrance. Directly after that was the ramp to the girls dorm, she was passing the handicapped ramp now, seeing how close she was. When she was grabbed she did the only thing she could think of; scream.
