Awkening

Eye Of The Beholder

Awakening:

Lilly was confused all she could do was scream. The last thing she remember was being in the graveyard with Darren. She had had a little wine and had begun to feel a little dizzy. Now she had just woken in a strange place with no recollection of how she had come to be here.

‘Be calm you are safe here. I mean you no harm.’

Lilly looked over at the curtain facing her, the direction the voice had come from. She could see a figure behind it. It made no move towards her. Simply staying on the other side. Nero moved further behind the cover shielding himself more from her view. She had been through enough already this evening. He retreated over to the tea he had prepared. Taking it over to the curtain he placed it on the other side.

‘I have made you some tea. Do not worry there is nothing extra in it just simple tea. It will make you feel a little more like yourself.’

‘Who are you? Where am I? What happened? Where’s Darren?’

‘Drink your tea I will answer your questions then you have been through a lot this evening. You have nothing to fear from me. Please call when you have finished and I will return then I will return you home.’

Nero moved back to his chair and pilled some more wood on the fire. Watching the flames he thought of the girl on the other side of the curtain. The girl that had only moments ago been sleeping in his bed. She was safe now and that was all that mattered. He would have to take her back soon. That needed some thinking about. Reaching into one of the boxes on the floor he retrieved a sample of silk fabric and began work.

Lilly saw the figure move again from the curtain. She should have felt worried by this stranger but amazingly she didn’t. It was almost a comfort to have him near like…. She didn’t know what. She retrieved the tea but remain on her side of the curtain. Looking around herself for the first time she became aware of the room itself. The walls were bare brickwork with no colour painted on them. The only colour came form swatches of fabric that had been hung in various positions on the walls. All though were slightly moth eaten and ragged around the edges. The light in the room came from a simple gas lantern in an alcove in the wall itself. The bed she had awoken in was also made of stone. This though looked hand crafted. At each corner stood a pillar. Each different. A slab stood at one end and acted as a headboard. Now sitting drinking her tea Lilly realised that the mattress itself felt old, slightly dipped in the middle from the regular occupant. Everything in the room seemed dark and slightly neglected. All except the bed sheets themselves. These were made out of red and purple velvet. They seemed have been well cared for. Soft to the touch.

Placing the now empty cup where she had got it Lilly went back to the bed and sat down again.

‘I’m finished’

She saw the figure return.

‘How do you feel?’

‘A little more like myself thank you. You said you would tell me what happened’

‘ I was watching you in the graveyard with your boyfriend I was concern after a conversation I had over heard him having with a friend of his earlier this evening. He explain that he had plans for you those of which I do not wish to repeat. Upon hearing this I knew I could not let it happen so I watch for you this evening. Sure enough at the time he had planned with his friend you both appeared. He had placed drugs in the wine he gave you to drink. I had thought he would not follow through with his plan but when I saw you begin to slump I realise that he had, I intervened. I had hoped I could do so and simply give you enough time to make your escape but it seems he had upped the dose. I brought you back here so no further harm would come to you.’

‘You have been watching me?’

‘For a few months I have been protecting you yes. No harm should come to you.’

Lilly knew if this had happened to anyone else they would have run for their lives yet something about what he had said caught her attention. He had been protection her for months. Something clicked in her brain. Over the past through moths she had felt some sort of presence in her life, she had simply put it down to a guardian angel or something. She had seemed to escape accidents because of strange circumstance. The main being nearly hit by a drunk driver but she had been struck on the head by a stone. She had turned at the curb to see who had thrown it. At that point the driver had come shooting past. She should have by all rights been in the road. She had never seen the person who throw the stone.

‘Why do you hide behind that curtain?’

‘You have been through enough already this evening I will not burden you with more. When you are ready I will take you back.’

‘If I cant see you how will you take me back?’

Nero threw the newly made silk blindfold on the bed. Then moved from the curtain. Lilly picked it up and stared down at it. She knew she should simply put in on and get out of here. But there was some thing in his tone that had caught her attention. He had sounded so down. Creeping over to the curtain Lilly pulled it aside and was confronted by the site of a very male back. He was so much taller then her 5’10 frame.

‘Why cant I see you?’

Nero knew she had passed the curtain. Her voice was closer, he could even hear her breathing, he could smell me even. Her footsteps drew right up behind him. He should move now get away he could lead her to the surface and hide before she could see him. Hemade a move to do so when her hand fell on his arm.

‘What are you running from? Please whatever it is I swear I will not judge. I owe you my life after this evening. At least let me see the face of my saviour.’

He couldn’t. Nero had been taught years ago that this was wrong. His mother had told him that if anyone should see him that they would kill him that he was wrong. Yet the warmth of her hand on his arm was so electrifying he couldn’t think straight.

‘Please’

Lilly began to turn him slowly till the light caught his face. She couldn’t help it she gasped.
